Part 4 — When My Son Numbered the Rooms in My House, I Asked One Question and the Smile Immediately Disappeared from His Face

After Elena’s words, the air in the room seemed to harden.

“Who will come?” I asked.

“An enforcement officer and two people who present themselves as medical representatives. They have a request for a temporary order.”

“But there is no court order yet.”

“That is exactly why do not open the door. I am going to the police now and I will be with you in the morning.”

The call ended.

Brenda immediately took out her phone.

“Trevor, she already knows everything.”

“Who knows?”

“Elena.”

“You said everything was settled,” Trevor replied.

For the first time I heard in his voice not anger, but fear.

“You signed,” Brenda told him.

“You told me that Mother was asking for help herself.”

I no longer listened to them. I stood by the desk and played Daniel’s recording again. His voice seemed like the only truth remaining in the room.

At nine o’clock at night the lawyer called me.

“Marina, Trevor’s representative is trying to take back the documents. Tell him that in the morning you are no longer working with him.”

“I am not his representative,” the man said on the other line. “Your son came to me, but when I learned about the false report, I withdrew from the case.”

Brenda heard this.

“Will you buy everyone?” she shouted at me.

“No,” I answered. “It is simply that the truth is no longer for sale.”

The next morning, at seven forty, three heavy knocks sounded on the door.

Trevor had stayed the entire night. He sat on the sofa and rubbed his hands as if he wanted to remove his own signature from his fingers.

“Do not open it,” he said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

From the window I saw two unfamiliar women and a man holding a paper folder. Drops of morning rain glittered on the street mailbox.

Elena arrived in ten minutes together with two police officers.

“Do you have an order?” she asked the man standing at the door.

“It is a temporary request.”

“A request does not give you the right to enter.”

The man stepped back, but one of the women quietly said:

“The lady is clearly confused.”

Elena opened her bag.

“Then I will explain who is confused. This is an audio recording left by Daniel Haley, in which it is said that any attempt to remove Marina from her house will be considered pressure. And this is a notarized ownership document.”

Trevor came to the door.

“Mother, I did not want this to happen.”

I looked at him.

“But it happened.”

“Brenda said that soon you would no longer be able to…”

“You listened to what you yourself were saying.”

Elena turned on the tablet. The conversation from that same day was recorded, when they were making the plan in the kitchen. Brenda’s voice could be heard clearly.

“First we have to change Mother’s residence. Then we will have access to the bank. If she resists us, we will say that she has lost her memory.”

Trevor raised his head.

It was his own voice. His own words.

He stepped back.

“I… did not say it like that.”

Elena played the recording from the beginning.

“First we have to change Mother’s residence.”

Trevor closed his eyes.

“God.”

I felt sorry for him, but I was no longer going to carry responsibility in his place.

The police did not handcuff Brenda then. First they took them to the station for questioning, while the author of the false medical report was arrested that same day. It turned out that the signature in the doctor’s name had been given to someone else.

Two weeks later the court officially confirmed my independence and ownership of the house. Trevor’s petition was canceled. Brenda was charged with fraud and forgery of documents.

!!!  Before the Wedding, My Family Asked Me to Disappear Forever, but My Calm Answer Changed My Father’s Face

As I was leaving the courthouse, Trevor caught up with me on the stairs.

“Mother, could you at least once explain why you did not trust me?”

I stopped.

“I trusted you. But you saw my trust as a house that you could take.”

He had no answer.

That evening I returned home alone.

There was no measuring tape in the dining room anymore. Only three scratches remained on the table and the small wooden swallow that Daniel had always checked with his hand.

The rooms prepared for Brenda and Trevor were empty. They had left one blanket in the closet. Beneath it I found their note, in which the rooms were numbered again.

I folded the sheet and put it in the trash bin.

Then I went to Daniel’s desk.

I left the hidden drawer open.

There was nothing left to hide.

Three months later I began working part-time at the city library. I liked arranging books. Every morning I sat by the window, opened the notebook, and helped visitors find old newspapers.

I planted new roses in the yard.

I repaired the handrail on the stairs, but I did not leave the house.

One Saturday my nephew, little Niko, came to me. At the dining table he drew a house whose windows gave off yellow light.

“Who lives here?” I asked.

“You,” he answered. “And Grandfather Daniel too, because I drew his chair in the window.”

I hung the picture above the table.

The first snow came at the beginning of December. When I opened the window in the morning, a white layer lay on the branches of the roses in the yard.

That same day I received a letter from Trevor.

“Mother, I take responsibility for everything. Brenda no longer speaks to me. I need help. Please meet me at home at least once.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Then I called Elena.

“Should I answer?”

“Only if you want to.”

!!!  After the Divorce, My Husband Rejected His Daughters and Said He Was Expecting a Son — But He Turned Pale After My Calm Answer

I returned to the window and touched Daniel’s wooden swallow.

Trevor was my son. That would never change.

But being his mother did not mean that I had to keep surviving in his place.

In response I wrote only one sentence:

“Your life has a door; my door belongs to me now.”

I sent the letter and put the phone aside.

Silence stood in the house.

Not the heavy silence that fell that day when they took my room away with words.

It was peaceful silence.

In the evening I lit a small lamp on the table. Beneath it the swallow carved by Daniel appeared, as if it were still looking at me from inside the wood.

I put the measuring tape in the drawer where their plan had previously lain.

Then I locked all the doors of the house from the inside.

This time the key was in my hand.

Missed the beginning?
