I Was a Billionaire and Was Testing a Child in My Own House, but His Unexpected Gesture Took the Breath Away from Security

That night, when I fell silent in my own house like death, I heard a small child’s voice from the kitchen, whispering my name.

It was ten o’clock in the evening. I had all the lights on in the enormous Westchester house, but the rooms still resembled empty wells. In the living room, I lay without my jacket on the white sofa and closed my eyes. I wanted to find out who would notice my silence.

This was the most humiliating test I had ever put myself through.

“Mr. Daniel?”

The voice stopped at the door. The rubber soles of small shoes lightly squeaked on the marble.

It was Lily, Maria’s three-year-old daughter. That evening I saw for the first time how shyly she stood in my room. She held a purple pencil in her hand, and green paint had dried on her fingers.

I closed my eyes more tightly.

“Are you sleeping?” she asked quietly.

I did not answer.

She stood there for several seconds. Then I heard a small, quiet exhalation.

“Good night, Mr. Daniel.”

Her footsteps disappeared down the corridor.

Suddenly, instead of victory, I felt shame. I knew exactly that no one would come in. Neither Maria, who had to clean the whole house early in the morning, nor the security employees, who regarded my movements only as a work schedule.

My father had told me that people need you only when they want to take something.

For twenty-eight years I had tried to prove that he was right.

A scratching sound came from the corridor.

At first I thought Lily had dragged a toy across the floor. Then the sound came closer. Something small and heavy was jumping on the marble and quietly knocking with every удар.

I opened my eyes.

Lily appeared at the threshold. With both hands she was dragging a small wooden house. The house was made roughly; on one wall a sun was drawn with a red pencil, and there were black spots on the roof. A thin rope was tied beside it.

“This is for you,” she told me.

“For me?”

“Yes. Maria said not to drag things around, but this is heavy.”

I sat up on the sofa. I looked at that little house as if its walls were saying something about me.

“Why did you give it to me?”

Lily shrugged.

“Because you live in a big house and are still alone.”

The words struck me directly in the chest.

“Who told you that I am alone?”

“Nobody. I see it.”

Maria appeared in the corridor. She held a white towel in her hand, and such fear was written on her face as if her child were breaking a valuable object.

“Lily, return to your room immediately.”

“But she must give it first.”

Maria turned toward me.

!!!  Part 4 — When my twelve-year-old daughter was ordered to clear out her own room, my husband’s calm smile suddenly made them go pale

“Mr. Haley, forgive me. I did not know she had come in here.”

“It is nothing.”

“I will take her somewhere else tomorrow. This will not happen again.”

“Why are you leaving?”

Maria fell silent.

“You do not like it when employees bring their private lives into work.”

“Is this not my house?”

“That is precisely why it is yours.”

Her answer irritated me. Probably because it sounded like the truth.

Lily placed the wooden house on my knees. Under the roof there was a small door cut out, but it could not be opened. One word was written on it in blue pencil: “Come in.”

At that moment my phone flashed on the sofa. The call was from my lawyer, and then a message came from the head of security: “Mr. Haley, movement has been detected in the archive room.”

Only my deceased father and I had ever had a key to the archive room.

Maria became pale.

“No one should enter there,” she said.

“Someone has already broken in.”

I took hold of the wooden house and stood up. Lily suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Mr. Daniel, do not open the door until you have this.”

Something slipped from her tiny fingers: a small wooden whistle shaped like an elephant, tied with red thread.

“What is this for?” I asked.

Lily looked toward the dark side of the corridor.

“If you get very scared, blow it. Whoever is really looking for you will hear.”

At that moment the heavy sound of a lock came from the archive room. Maria stood in front of me, and Lily put the whistle into my hand. I went toward the door and reached toward the inner pocket of my jacket to take out the key…

I caught the key between my fingers, but the door was already opening. The head of security, Thomas, rushed in, holding a flashlight.

“No one is here,” he said.

“Then why did the lock open?”

Thomas looked at the floor. A small footprint was visible in the dust, and beside it was a drop of red paint.

Maria immediately tensed.

“I did not enter this room.”

“I did not say that.”

“But you think it.”

An old wooden box lay on the table. Its lock was broken, and inside there remained only a yellowed scrap of paper.

My heart began beating strangely. My father’s things were kept in this room. Charles Haley kept everything he had ever used for power.

Lily tugged at my hand.

“Take the roof off the house.”

“Why?”

“Inside is what you must find.”

Maria turned toward her.

“Lily, be quiet.”

But the child had already said it.

I carefully removed the roof of the wooden house. Inside lay a thin copper key, with a small date engraved on it: December fourteenth, two thousand fourteen.

!!!  On Christmas Eve, he called me from the hospital and told me he would not be able to come to work in the morning — Killian lost color

That was the day of my mother’s death.

The phone rang again. This time the number was hidden.

“Do not answer,” Maria told me.

“Why?”

For the first time she looked at me as if she were standing not against me, but to protect me.

“Because if they called you, they already know that you opened the box…”

“Who knows?” I asked and reached for the phone.

Maria stepped in front of me.

“You must listen to me first.”

It was eleven o’clock at night in the archive room. Rain struck the windows, while the smell of old books had settled like heavy air. Lily sat by the door, clutching the wooden house in her lap.

“Where did you get this key?”

Maria was silent for a long time.

“Your mother gave it to me.”

She said the words so calmly, as if she had told me that it would rain tomorrow.

“My mother died twenty-eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then how did she give it to you?”

Maria went to the table and took a small, scratched voice recorder from her pocket. Old adhesive tape was wrapped around the side of the device.

“That day I was twelve years old. Your mother’s helper was my aunt. When we returned home from the hospital, Mrs. Helen gave us this item and the key. She told us to keep them for you until you became an adult.”

“Why did you not give them to me?”

“Your father frightened us. He said that if we ever told you anything, he would leave my family on the street.”

My fingers unconsciously tightened around the wooden whistle.

“Turn it on.”

Maria could not move.

“Mr. Haley, perhaps all this is no longer necessary.”

“Turn it on.”

Her hand trembled. First a hiss came from the recorder, then a woman’s tired but warm voice.

“Daniel, if you are hearing this, it means that Father was unable to freeze your heart completely.”

The air caught in my lungs.

I remembered my mother’s voice only for a few seconds, but I recognized this voice immediately. In childhood she sang to me at night. Then one day that song disappeared.

“Your father will tell you that my death was sudden and that I did not have time to say anything. That will be a lie. I knew that I was ill, but I also knew that Charles had transferred money from my inheritance fund. Money that belonged to you. He made me sign the documents while I was dazed by medication.”

Charles’s voice sounded sharply in the recording.

!!!  My husband brought home newborn twins and demanded I disappear, but when he opened the envelope I left behind, his smile vanished

“Helen, this is being done for the family.”

“No, Charles. This is being done for your fear.”

Maria was wiping her eyes. Thomas had frozen at the door.

In the recording, Mother continued:

“If anyone ever tells you that no one needs you, do not believe them. I will no longer be in your life, but I will be in your choices. Always leave a door open for the house.”

The recording stopped.

No one could speak.

My father had spent his whole life convincing me that Mother had not left a single word for me. Now her voice stood before me and told me that I was not lost, but hidden.

“Where are the documents?” I asked.

Maria bent down to the lower drawer of the table. The copper key opened the lock. Inside were the fund documents signed by my mother and the last page, where it was written that Charles had transferred the money prematurely.

At that same moment the phone lit up again.

This time Nathan’s name was visible on the screen.

“Do not pick up,” Thomas told me.

But the call ended and was replaced by a message: “If you found this recording, Daniel, know that your father’s story is only half. The other half is known by the person you still trust…”

Maria slowly turned around.

I saw on her face a fear that had not been for me. She looked at the phone and whispered:

“Nathan knows where my brother is…”
