I saw a new bandage on my niece’s shoulder at the camp, and on the way my sister ordered me to turn back — her voice suddenly cut off

The moment I saw a clean bandage on Lily’s shoulder, I realized that my sister had been hiding the truth from me all night.

On Saturday, at two in the afternoon, I was standing in the changing room of the municipal pool and drying Emma’s wet hair with a small yellow towel. The sharp smell of chlorine rose from the walls, drops of water glittered on the floor, and Lily stood with her back to us, adjusting the strap of her swimsuit so quickly, as if someone had assigned her to hide her body.

“Mom, look at Lily,” Emma whispered to me.

Her voice was such that I immediately understood this was not ordinary curiosity.

I went over to Lily and gently asked:

“Sweetheart, can I help you?”

The girl immediately tensed. Her shoulders rose to her ears, and her fingers squeezed the blue towel so tightly that the fabric crumpled.

“It’s nothing, Aunt Nino.”

“You have a bandage. Are you hurt?”

Lily slowly shook her head.

“Did you fall in the pool?”

Again, a refusal.

I knelt in front of her. Her eyes darted toward the door. No one was standing there, but Lily was looking as if someone was listening on the other side of the wooden door.

“Have you been to the doctor?” I asked.

This time fear appeared on her face.

“This did not happen accidentally,” she told me almost soundlessly.

Emma squeezed my hand.

“Mom, was Lily doing something bad?”

“No,” I answered immediately. “Lily did nothing wrong.”

Tears gathered in the girl’s eyes. I sat beside her and placed my hand over hers.

“You can tell me everything. You are safe with me.”

Lily opened her lips but said no word. Then she looked toward the entrance of the changing room and said quietly:

“It is not allowed to talk about this.”

“Who told you that?”

She lowered her head.

“If I tell, Mom will get angry.”

That answer dropped a cold stone into my heart. Sara had called me the previous evening and said, “I am very tired, Lily should stay with you for the weekend.” I agreed without even thinking. Lily was six years old, but she behaved like an excessively cautious child: if she spilled water, she apologized three times; before touching a toy, she asked permission; after every sentence, she checked the adults’ faces.

Until now I had blamed this on shyness.

Now I realized that the child was checking someone’s mood in order to survive.

I dressed Lily and Emma, put the wet things into a cloth bag, and led them toward the car. Lily’s small backpack was pink, and a little wooden bird hung from its zipper. The bird’s wing was broken and made a dry, rattling sound with every step.

When we got into the car, my hands began to tremble. I drove to the children’s hospital.

Ten minutes later, the phone lit up.

I received one message from Sara: “Turn back. Now.”

She did not ask where we were. She was not interested in whether Lily was in pain. It was only an order.

I called her.

“Sara, what happened to your daughter?”

For several seconds, silence settled on the other side.

“Nino, do not go to the hospital.”

“Why?”

“Just come back. I will explain everything at home.”

“If everything is ordinary, why are you afraid of a doctor?”

I heard tension in her breathing.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“I know that a six-year-old child has a bandage on her shoulder and tells me she was not hurt accidentally.”

Sara lowered her voice:

“Lily fantasizes too much.”

From the back seat, Lily raised her head. For the first time, she did not look away.

I saved the message, put the phone into my bag, and placed the car key in Lily’s palm.

“Why did you give me this?” she asked.

“Because this car is now serving your safety.”

The hospital entrance was already visible. Just then I saw a black car in the rear-view mirror. It was following us from one turn.

Lily put her hand on the bird pendant and whispered to me:

“Auntie, please, do not stop. He is here too.”

I pressed the brake, took the phone, and was about to call the police when the hospital doors opened and an unfamiliar woman walked quickly toward our car. She held a brown folder in her hand. The woman bent toward the window, looked at Lily, and said to me:

“If you want this child to be taken away from you today, get out of the car…”

The woman stood by the car window and clutched the folder to her chest as if our lives were inside it. The black car stopped several meters away. I could not see anyone at the wheel, but the low rumble of the engine did not stop.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“I am a representative of the child protection service. My name is Mariam.”

“Why did you come here?”

Mariam looked at Lily.

“You need to enter the hospital. Get out of the car and lock the doors.”

“My sister warned me to take Lily back.”

“I know,” she said. “Sara has already called you.”

Cold passed over my neck.

“How do you know?”

Mariam pressed the corner of the folder against the glass.

“Because this is not the first time she has tried to control the child’s testimony.”

Lily lifted her head from the back seat.

“Auntie, do not tell Mom that I told you.”

“You will do nothing wrong,” I said and got out of the car. “No one will have the right to blame you for the truth anymore.”

In the hospital’s bright corridor, instead of chlorine there was the smell of disinfectant. Small plastic chairs had been placed along the wall. Lily sat on one of them, put her backpack on her knees, and gripped the zipper with both hands.

The nurse looked at the bandage and brought a doctor. The skin on the shoulder turned out to be burned—a superficial but fresh injury. The doctor spoke calmly, although her brows were drawn together.

“Lily, can you tell me how this happened?”

The girl looked first at me, then at Mariam.

“It was hot.”

“What was hot?”

Lily could not answer.

Mariam asked softly:

“Did it happen at home?”

The girl nodded.

“Who was with you?”

Lily’s fingers gripped the backpack zipper even more tightly.

“Mom and Dato.”

Dato was Sara’s boyfriend. They had started living together three months earlier. Sara said that Dato was a calm and attentive man. I, however, had noticed several times how Lily fell silent when Dato entered the room.

Even then I did not pay enough attention.

“Auntie, I kept this for you,” Lily said.

She took a small plush rabbit from the backpack. One ear had been resewn, and a small plastic button was visible on its belly. Lily moved the rabbit’s ear aside and took out a miniature voice recorder from inside.

“Who gave it to you?” I asked.

“Dato. He told me that if I showed it to anyone, they would take Mom away.”

Mariam tensed.

“Was it turned on?”

Lily nodded.

“When they argued, I pressed the button. Then Mom told me that she had erased everything. But I did not erase it.”

I placed the recorder on the doctor’s table. My hands were still trembling. Mariam put the small device into a special bag.

At that moment Sara rushed into the hospital. Her hair was disheveled, she was wearing house slippers, and she held car keys in her hand.

“Lily!” she shouted. “Nino, let us leave this place.”

“The child must be examined by a doctor,” Mariam told her.

Sara looked at her, and her face changed.

“Who are you?”

“You have already asked that question.”

“She is my daughter.”

“That is why you are obliged to protect her, not frighten her.”

Sara stepped toward me.

“Nino, let us go home. Dato is angry because you confused the child.”

“Is Dato here?”

Sara fell silent.

At that very moment, a call came to my phone. An unknown number appeared on the screen. I answered.

“Nino,” a man’s voice said. “If you do not return Lily now, you will never see your daughter again.”

Emma grabbed my hand. The voice was recorded on the phone, quietly but clearly.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The man chuckled.

“You will find out very soon. But before that, tell me where the rabbit is…”

The call ended. Everyone’s voice in the corridor fell silent. Lily looked at the rabbit, then at Mariam, and said:

“He is not looking for the rabbit. He needs the second recording hidden inside it.”

Mariam put her hand on the bag and asked me:

“Lily, what is on the second recording?”

The girl lowered her eyes.

“Mom was not alone that day…”

After these words, the sound of heavy footsteps was heard at the hospital entrance. Dato’s shadow appeared on the glass of the door, while Mariam took out her phone for the first time and quietly dialed the emergency number…

Mariam locked the corridor door, but Dato’s shadow was still visible on the other side of the glass. His fingers slowly touched the handle.

“The police are on their way,” Mariam said. “No one will leave this room.”

Sara shook her head.

“You do not understand. Dato will not hurt Lily.”

“Then why is he standing at the hospital door and threatening Nino?” I asked.

Sara lowered her eyes.

The doctor turned on the small voice recorder. At first, only static and a child’s breathing could be heard. Then Dato’s voice sounded.

“Stand by the wall. Do not move.”

Lily’s weak voice followed:

“I am scared.”

“If you cry, I will tell your mother that you lied again.”

Then the metallic sound of something was heard, followed by Sara’s frightened exclamation.

“Dato, enough!”

“Be quiet, Sara. If you tell anyone, they will take Lily away from you. And you will go to prison because you signed.”

The recording paused for several seconds, then Sara’s voice was heard clearly:

“Nino must never find out.”

Silence fell in the room.

Sara covered her face with her hands.

“I did not want this to happen.”

“But it happened,” I said. My voice was calm, although everything inside me was collapsing. “You knew.”

“Dato threatened Lily. He told me that if I called the police, he would publish my old documents and they would take the child away from me anyway.”

“So you blamed the child?”

Sara looked at Lily.

“I thought Dato would stop.”

“He did not stop,” Mariam said. “And you did not stop him either.”

The doctor carefully cut open the plush rabbit. A second small memory card was found inside its belly. The recording could not be opened immediately, but the specialist confirmed that the last conversation had been saved on it.

Lily sat on my lap.

“Will Mom leave now?” she asked.

Tears came to Sara’s eyes.

“No, Lily. I am here.”

The girl shook her head.

“You were there then too.”

That one sentence completely broke Sara. She sat down on a chair and stared at the tips of her shoes.

A shout came from outside. Dato was hitting the door with his fist.

“Open the door! This is my family!”

Mariam confirmed the address to the police. A few seconds later, uniformed officers appeared in the corridor. Dato’s voice suddenly fell silent.

One of the police officers opened the door.

“Dato Kapanadze, we need to speak with you.”

“This is a family matter.”

“Threatening a child is no longer a family matter.”

Dato looked toward me.

“Nino, think. If you continue this, your daughter will no longer be safe.”

I took Emma’s hand.

“My daughter will not grow up with threats.”

They took Dato away, but at that very moment Mariam received a new message. The color drained from her face.

“What happened?” I asked.

She held out the screen to me. The message had been sent from Sara’s number, although Sara had been sitting in the room the entire time.

“If you open the recording, Nino will become the guilty one. The document has already been sent.”

“I did not send this,” Sara said.

Mariam opened another file on the phone. My signature was visible in it—as if several months earlier I had refused guardianship of Lily.

“This is forged,” I said.

“I know,” Mariam answered. “But whoever prepared this intends to submit it to court in the morning.”

At that moment a new call came to my phone. It was the lawyer’s number.

“Nino,” he told me, “you must know immediately: Dato did not arrange only an injury for Lily. He has officially requested guardianship of your children and stated that you are psychologically unstable.”

I looked at Lily. The girl was still sitting on my lap and clutching the broken-winged rabbit to her chest.

Then I realized that the battle would not be only against Dato. Someone had begun this entire plan long before.

And below my signature on that forged document was written one name, the sight of which frightened me most: Sara…
