I Submitted My Resignation Letter, but My Boss Locked the Door — Then His Question Frightened Him for the First Time

At seventeen minutes past midnight, Vincent Romano locked the door and put the key into the pocket of his dark suit. And I stood in his office on the forty-second floor, watching the cold lights of Chicago become tangled in the rain.

My resignation letter lay on his desk. Unopened.

The wall clock ticked. Rain struck the windows. And I felt my own heartbeat in my throat and touched with my fingers the small silver clasp of my green wool scarf—the thing my mother had given me before my first day at work.

“You can’t do this,” I said.

“I already did.”

“This is a resignation, Vincent. It is not a negotiation.”

Something changed on his face when I said his name for the first time. For four years I had called him “Mr. Romano” in front of everyone. But now I could no longer continue the lie.

“You were beside me for four years,” he said. “And now you come at midnight, put down a letter, and tell me you are leaving forever?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I explained it in the letter.”

“I’m not interested in the letter.”

“Then read the handover folder and open the door.”

Vincent came toward me. He had never needed to raise his voice to make people obey him, but this time I saw not anger in his eyes, but pain. That was what frightened me most.

“Did someone threaten you?” he asked.

“No.”

“Did Gideon tell you something?”

At the mention of his cousin’s name, my face changed involuntarily. Vincent noticed at once.

“What did Gideon do?”

“Nothing I can prove in thirty seconds.”

“Then you have one minute.”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You cannot cancel an employee’s resignation by imprisoning them.”

“You are not just an employee.”

“That is exactly what I am.”

“No, you are not.”

I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Then what am I?”

He could not find an answer to that question. For four years I had organized everything in his life: companies brought to the edge of failure, secret meetings, the chaos left after his father’s funeral. I knew when he drank coffee without sugar and when he added one spoon because he had had a nightmare at night.

I knew that he had difficulty breathing in locked elevators. I knew how he fell silent on the anniversary of his mother’s death. I knew that when my sister’s car broke down on the highway, he sent help as if it meant nothing.

And I fell in love with a man who did not notice it. Or noticed and did nothing.

“Open the door,” I repeated.

“Do you want money? I’ll double your salary.”

“No.”

“I’ll make it triple.”

“That will change nothing.”

“Then name what will change it.”

“You cannot buy with money what I need.”

His phone lay on the desk. My phone vibrated once in my coat pocket.

It was the signal.

A message appeared on the screen: disruption in the security network. Three cameras were offline—by the service elevator, in the corridor on the twenty-ninth floor, and in the executive reception area.

Vincent saw my face.

“What happened?”

I went to him and whispered almost into his ear:

“Your cousin paid the head of night security two hundred and fifty thousand dollars eleven days ago through a dummy company. The western freight elevator is disconnected from the public control system, but it works manually. The cameras have been out for thirty seconds.”

Vincent stopped.

“How many are there?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me until now?”

“Because until then I didn’t know what the payment meant.”

The distant sound of an elevator bell rang.

The numbers on the screen changed: twenty-seventh floor. Twenty-eighth. Twenty-ninth.

Vincent picked up my letter, then looked toward the wooden wall panel. He brought his fingers to the code of a hidden lock, and a door opened behind the bookcase.

There was a gun inside.

He picked it up, and I squeezed the silver clasp of the scarf so hard that I cut my skin.

Footsteps sounded outside the office. Vincent looked at me, placed his hand on the gun, and said quietly:

“Now tell me, Harper, what is in your folder…”

Vincent’s hand tightened on the gun. The door handle moved slowly.

“Don’t open it yet,” I whispered.

“You hid all this.”

“I was trying to save you.”

“What were you hiding from me?”

“That your cousin was not planning only to get rid of you.”

Three light knocks sounded on the door.

Vincent turned off the light. Only the reflection of lightning shattered on the windows remained in the room. I heard his breathing beside my ear and wanted to believe once more that I was safe beside him. But this time being beside him was the most dangerous thing.

“Is the resignation real?” he asked.

“Yes.”

His gaze grew heavier.

“Then why did you come?”

“Because at least once, finally, you had to listen to me.”

A voice came from outside the door:

“Mr. Romano, we are security.”

Vincent shook his head. Real security employees never addressed him by name.

He opened a hidden drawer and took out a small folder.

“What is this?” he asked.

“Proof that Gideon has begun selling your empire.”

The door handle went all the way down.

Vincent opened the folder, but at the sight of the first sheet his face turned pale.

“Harper… this signature is mine.”

“I know.”

“I did not write this.”

The lock cracked from outside.

And then a new message came to my phone: “If you want to survive, trust only the one who spoke most loudly against you…”

When I read the message, Vincent’s eyes shone at me.

“Who sent it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who spoke most loudly against me?”

The pounding on the door grew stronger. Dust fell from the crack in the wood.

“Your lawyer, Marco,” I said. “For three months he has been telling you not to trust Gideon.”

“Marco takes Gideon’s money.”

“I know. That is exactly why he sent you the message.”

Vincent took the folder from my hands. The papers trembled in his fingers. The first document was a bank statement. The second was authorization for the transfer of company shares. On the third was his digital signature, granting Gideon the right to sell most of Romano’s transportation network to a foreign fund.

“This is impossible,” he said.

“The signature is a copy. They created it using an old certificate inserted into your computer.”

“How do you know?”

“I found the first part of the trail myself. Then I hired an auditor and stored everything on a separate server.”

The door shook. Vincent raised the gun.

“You hid this for four years?”

“No. I have been checking for four weeks. And the resignation letter is real too.”

That same pain returned to his eyes.

“You are still leaving.”

“Because after all this I realized that I can no longer live in your shadow.”

At that moment the lock broke and two armed men burst into the room. Vincent knocked the first one into the corner, while the second collided with me. The silver clasp of the scarf tore from my neck and rang on the floor.

Vincent knocked the weapon from the second man’s hand, but did not shoot him.

“Who sent you?” he asked.

The man remained silent.

Just then the wall screen lit up. Marco’s face appeared. He was standing in a hotel room, and Gideon was visible behind him.

“You realized it far too late, cousin,” Gideon said. “The signature is already at the bank. Tomorrow morning everything will be mine.”

Vincent looked at the screen.

“You wanted to kill me?”

“No. Your disappearance. Death would attract too much attention.”

I turned on the recording. From the same room where Gideon now stood, his voice rang out clearly: “If Vincent resists, make his secretary disappear too.”

Gideon’s face changed.

For the first time Vincent heard his family’s betrayal in someone else’s voice. The shards of glass scattered around the room crackled underfoot.

“Marco,” he said, “call the police.”

Marco nodded.

But before the screen went dark, he added quietly:

“There is one more file, Harper. The file Gideon does not know about either. And if it is opened in the morning, Vincent will lose not only the company, but his freedom as well…”
