My Best Friend Married My Sister, but His Words in the Operating Room Suddenly Made My Mother Go Pale

I was standing by the door of the operating room when Ben squeezed my hands as if he was afraid I would run away.

“Now you must learn why I really married Rosie,” he told me.

His voice was quiet, but in that corridor every word sounded like metal. The clock hanging on the wall showed four in the morning. The red light was still on, and beneath it I was holding a small paper cup that was trembling.

Rosie was one year younger than me. In childhood, some people mocked her, while others simply moved away, as if she were unplayable music. She had Down syndrome, but to me she was only Rosie—the girl who loved yellow hair clips and loudly repeated the last word of every song.

Ben was the only one who never looked at her with pity.

“Rosie, Ben and I will always be with you,” I used to tell her.

In the fourth grade, Ben promised her that he would definitely take her to the prom. Everyone laughed and thought that years later Ben and I would get married. I thought so too. Until one evening he came to our house, knelt down, and asked Rosie for her hand.

I locked myself in the kitchen and cried so hard that I still remember the taste of mint stuck between my teeth.

Rosie, though, was laughing. Her yellow clips glittered on the table.

“Ben will become my family,” she told me.

And indeed he did.

The years passed peacefully. They had a small, bright house on the outskirts of the city. Ben never spoke to Rosie as if she were a child. They made decisions together, argued, and took turns cooking dinner. When Rosie became pregnant, twins were expected, and the whole family filled with joy.

In the eighth month, everything collapsed.

In the hospital emergency room, at eleven at night, the doctor told me that Rosie’s blood pressure had fallen dangerously low. The sharp smell of disinfectant filled the corridor, while a small coffee stain remained on Ben’s shirt.

“Will we save the mother and the babies?” I asked the doctor.

He lowered his eyes before answering.

“We are doing everything.”

Ben stood beside me all night. He did not sit down even once. But when the operating-room door closed, he suddenly grabbed me by the wrist and led me into the empty corridor.

“What is happening?” I asked.

“Rosie made me swear that if she did not wake up, I would tell you everything.”

“What everything?”

He put his hand on the inside pocket of his jacket. There was such fear on his face that for the first time I realized: this night was deciding not only Rosie’s life.

“I did not marry Rosie for the reason you thought.”

My stomach clenched.

“For money? Her inheritance? Or so that you could stay close to me?”

Ben shook his head.

“It is much worse than you imagine. Sit down.”

I sat on the iron chair. He took a folded sheet of paper from his pocket. The paper had red stains at the corners, as if someone had held it with bloody fingers.

Ben slid the paper toward me.

I read the first sentence.

Then a scream burst from me…

Ben immediately covered my mouth.

“Quiet, Ana. Everyone here will hear.”

But it was already too late. On the paper, in Rosie’s handwriting, it said: “If I do not wake up, believe Ben. Do not trust Father.”

“Father?” I barely uttered. “What does this mean?”

Ben looked toward the end of the corridor. Our father, Givi, was sitting in the waiting room at that moment, calmly talking on the phone. His silver watch threw cold light with every movement.

“Rosie found something three months ago,” Ben told me. “Funds, signatures, documents. She thought Father was taking her money.”

“Impossible.”

“I thought so too. Then I saw the bank statements.”

“And why did you tell me nothing?”

Ben lowered his eyes.

“Because you were in danger too. Rosie said Father would convince everyone that she understood nothing.”

The red light of the operating room was still on. The paper trembled in my hand.

“What does all this have to do with the marriage?”

Ben could not answer. Just then Givi’s voice came from the waiting room:

“Ben, the doctor told me that Rosie cannot make decisions. I will decide the matter of the children.”

Ben looked at me.

“There is one more thing Rosie left only for you…”

The corridor door slowly opened. An unfamiliar woman entered with a black bag and walked straight toward Givi…

The unfamiliar woman stopped in front of Givi and took a sealed folder from the black bag. Her heels tapped sharply on the floor. Ben stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“Nino Makharadze, Rosie’s lawyer. She instructed me to give this folder only to Ana and Ben.”

Givi extended his hand.

“My daughter is in the operating room. All her affairs belong to me.”

Nino pulled her hand back.

“Not anymore.”

Such silence fell in the corridor that somewhere far away I heard the intermittent beeping of a machine. Ben opened the folder’s clasp. Inside were bank statements, a medical authorization, and a statement signed by Rosie.

Nino read the paper aloud:

“I, Rosie Kavtaradze, fully understand my decision. My father, Givi Kavtaradze, has for four years been taking the assistance payments and inheritance money deposited in my name. He made me sign documents he could not explain to me. Ben helped me check everything. We married so that my father could no longer cancel my decisions and so that my children would have protection from him.”

Givi’s face went pale.

“That is not her handwriting,” he said.

Nino took out a second sheet.

“Handwriting examination has already been conducted.”

“Rosie is sick!” Givi shouted. “Someone made her write this.”

“Rosie recorded the conversations herself,” Ben said.

He turned on his phone. Givi’s voice rang out in the corridor, clear and calm:

“Before the grandchildren are born, the money must remain in my account. No one in court will believe Rosie’s opinion anyway.”

Then we heard his second recording:

“Do not tell Ana either. She is emotional and will ruin everything.”

My knees gave way. I leaned against the wall. Father heard his own words and, for the first time, could not find an answer.

“Ben… did you know this?” I asked.

“I knew Rosie needed protection. But I did not know how far Father would go.”

!!!  Part 4 — At the End of the Wedding, My Mother-in-Law Put the Gift Envelopes into Her Bag, but Her Face Changed After My Calm Answer

“And why did you stay?”

Ben lowered his eyes.

“Because I love Rosie. Not as a childhood promise. As a woman, my wife, and the mother of my children.”

At these words, the operating-room door opened. The surgeon lowered his mask.

“Rosie is alive. The twins too.”

I began crying with joy. Ben pressed his forehead against the wall.

But there was no joy on the doctor’s face.

“During the blood transfusion we discovered one more thing,” he said. “The group listed in Rosie’s medical record does not match her actual group. This is not an accidental mistake.”

Nino immediately looked at Ben.

“If this record is old, someone has endangered Rosie’s life for years.”

Givi stepped back.

“You do not know what you are saying.”

But at that same moment Nino’s phone rang. She listened, her face changed, and she turned toward us.

“The police found the archive of the old clinic. There is a document there that Givi has hidden all his life…”
