My Husband Welcomed Me with Applause When I Left the Hospital, but the Smile Disappeared from His Face After One Question

At the hospital door my husband was standing with flowers, but during thirty days he had not come up to my ward even once, and now his colleagues were supposed to applaud.

I was walking slowly along the corridor of Santa Isabel University Hospital. After a severe abdominal infection I had lost nine kilograms, undergone two operations, and with every step an invisible pain pulled at my left side. I was holding a small suitcase, on whose handle the hospital’s blue ribbon was still attached.

“Are you sure someone is coming to pick you up?” nurse Marina asked me.

I looked into the courtyard through the window.

Six floors below, my husband, Alvaro Montes, was standing in a white coat. Several doctors were laughing around him. He was holding a large bouquet of roses. When the doors opened and I appeared, applause broke out.

The most painful thing was that this applause was not for me.

Alvaro stepped forward.

“At last, you are going home, Lucia.”

“You came?”

“Of course. It is an important day.”

His voice seemed warm, but his eyes were looking behind me, where the hospital director and a young man working with a camera were standing. Alvaro handed me the bouquet as if he had received another award at a medical conference.

“Thirty days,” I said quietly. “You could not come up to my ward for thirty days.”

His smile froze for a moment.

“I was very busy.”

I already knew this sentence by heart. I had said it to the nurses. To my mother. To myself.

Alvaro was the chief doctor of the new cardiovascular surgery program. He said that he did not have even one minute between operations. But I had seen his photographs on the hospital’s page: holding a glass at a reception, during an interview on regional television, receiving an award together with the director.

He was laughing everywhere.

But with me he could not walk up six floors.

I went home by taxi. It was six o’clock in the evening when I opened the door. Alvaro was sitting in the kitchen and replying to messages on his phone. He barely raised his head.

“You are already here.”

“I thought you would come to pick me up.”

“Lucia, do not start. The last month was hell. You cannot imagine what pressure I worked under.”

I put the suitcase on the floor. On the kitchen table stood his coffee cup, with a ring of dried foam at the bottom.

“You know what I went through, don’t you?”

“The doctors did everything.”

“I asked you.”

Alvaro sighed.

“Do we have to talk about this again?”

Four days earlier, in the hospital, I had first begun to doubt the reason for his absence. I worked as a healthcare quality consultant and knew how medical documents were stored. The administrative records I found by accident I initially considered ordinary forms.

Then I saw the dates.

The permits.

The signatures.

And one sheet whose reading made my hands freeze.

Alvaro had changed his work schedule himself. Every Tuesday and Thursday, during almost the entire period of my treatment, he was free in the afternoon.

Free.

But he had not come to me.

I went upstairs to the bedroom, took out the small suitcase, and began packing clothes. An old green scarf remained in my hand—the one Alvaro had given me on the second anniversary of our wedding. A small silver bell hung from the edge of the scarf and quietly jingled while walking.

That night this sound sounded like my final decision.

Then I went downstairs.

Alvaro was still bent over his phone.

I took off my wedding ring and put it on the medical report. Beside it I placed the copy I had found four days earlier.

“What are you doing?” he asked me.

“Tomorrow you will meet my lawyer.”

Alvaro laughed incredulously.

“You are ending an eight-year marriage because I could not come up to the hospital?”

“No. I am ending it because of what you did when you said you could do nothing.”

I walked toward the door. Behind me his laughter stopped. For the first time that evening, Alvaro truly looked at the sheet lying on the table, while his hand slowly reached toward the folder…

The folder said that Alvaro had personally requested the Tuesday and Thursday afternoons off during almost the entire period of my hospitalization.

At first I thought he had another woman.

But the truth turned out to be colder.

He was secretly meeting members of the hospital board. He wanted the position of head of surgery and was proving to everyone that there was nothing in his life except work.

One letter said: “I will not bring family matters into the professional environment.”

Then I understood why he had not come up to me. My illness was simply a shame for him.

Two weeks later I received the divorce petition at a doctors’ meeting. We met in a café together with the lawyers.

“Are you destroying everything over one difficult month?” Alvaro asked me.

I slid the folder toward him.

“This is not everything.”

My medical history said that on the most difficult night the hospital had called the family contact person three times.

At 02:17.

At 02:26.

At 02:41.

All three calls were recorded as received.

Alvaro turned pale.

“Now tell me that you did not know I could die.”

He looked away from me.

“I knew you were in good hands.”

At that moment his lawyer saw the last sheet of the folder and his color changed…

His lawyer, Daniel Rojas, sat silently for several seconds. The crackling of the coffee machine could be heard in the café, while raindrops collided with one another on the window.

“Alvaro,” he said at last, “why is this sheet here?”

“Which sheet?”

Daniel turned my folder around. On the last page lay a record extracted from the hospital’s electronic system. Beside each call it said: “Delivered to the recipient’s device.” Below, Alvaro’s telephone number was visible.

“This is a technical error,” Alvaro said quickly.

“Three different times, the same number, and three confirmations of receipt?” I asked.

“Then someone else had the phone.”

“Who?”

He opened his mouth, but could not find an answer.

Daniel took off his glasses and put them on the table.

“Did you receive these messages?”

“Hundreds of messages arrive at the hospital every day.”

“They said that your wife was in critical condition.”

Alvaro’s fingers wrapped around the cup handle. The white ceramic trembled slightly.

“The doctors knew that she was being cared for.”

“I am asking you about your care,” I said.

Daniel took out the second page of the record. It indicated that the night-duty doctor needed a family member’s consent for a decision connected with emergency intervention. Twenty-eight minutes after the message was received, another call had been made to Alvaro’s phone. There was no answer to that call.

“This is no longer just carelessness,” Daniel said.

Alvaro leaned toward me.

“Lucia, I knew you would come out. You are strong.”

“Strong people also need someone to answer the phone.”

“I did not want the board to think that my personal life was getting in my way.”

That was the complete truth. He had said it himself.

Daniel leaned back in his chair. For the first time I saw not regret but fear on Alvaro’s face.

“This conversation is over,” the lawyer said. “I cannot try to hide these documents.”

“You are my lawyer!” Alvaro shouted.

“That is exactly why I am telling you that everything must be disclosed.”

I closed the folder. I thought I already knew the hardest thing. But at that very moment my phone rang. The number was unknown.

“Mrs. Serrano?” a man’s voice said. “I am the head of the hospital’s internal audit. We found another record concerning your husband.”

My breath caught.

“What record?”

The voice fell silent for several seconds.

“These calls were only the beginning. Tomorrow morning you must see a video that was recorded that night…”

He told me the address and hung up. Alvaro was looking at me. By then I already knew that his career, marriage, and secret were hanging on one recording, but he still did not understand to whom the last message sent from his phone that night had gone…
