Part 4 — My daughter hid the humiliation in her husband’s house, but when I made one call, his mother stopped smiling for the first time

Savchuk slowly lowered the phone.

“The bank is asking for a meeting in ten minutes,” he said.

Maksim exhaled for the first time. That old confidence appeared in his eyes again, which I thought had disappeared forever after the recording.

“You see?” he said. “Now everyone will have to talk to me.”

“Not to you,” Savchuk answered. “To your lawyer.”

We called the lawyer immediately. He viewed the document electronically, remained silent for several seconds, and then said sternly:

“Mrs. Elena, this is not your signature. But someone used your old certificate.”

“Can you protect my group?”

“I can. However, there is one thing you must know first. The guarantee was sent to the bank from Maksim’s computer.”

Maksim shook his head.

“Everyone had access to my computer.”

“Then you will explain that in court,” the lawyer told him. “And from this moment I will sign no document in your name.”

The call ended.

Maksim leaned against the wall.

Irina looked at him.

“Tell me that you did not do all this.”

“Mother, be quiet.”

“You told me that Natalia was signing herself!”

“I said be quiet!”

The police officer played the recording once more.

Maksim’s voice sounded in the room. Clearly. Without hurrying.

“If Natalia does not sign, we will frighten her mother. In the end they will blame her anyway.”

Maksim sat down on a chair.

For the first time he heard his own words through another person’s ears.

His face no longer resembled that of the man who had sat on the sofa and watched his phone while his wife was being beaten. Now he was simply a frightened person whom no one was protecting.

“I only wanted to save the money,” he whispered.

Natalia looked at him.

“In my name?”

“You are my wife.”

“And that is why you had to destroy me?”

He could not answer that question.

The police took Maksim and Irina away. Irina stopped at the door and turned toward me.

“You planned all of this in advance.”

“No,” I told her. “You planned it yourselves. I only did what a mother had to do.”

After they left, Natalia stood silently for a long time.

The hallway clock ticked in the house. A small pearl lay on the floor — from the bracelet Irina had taken off. Natalia picked it up and enclosed it in her palm.

“Mom, why didn’t you come in immediately?”

“Because I wanted to protect you not for one evening, but for your whole life.”

“I thought I was alone.”

“You will never be alone again.”

The following days filled with calls, meetings, and bank checks. Every contract was suspended. The suspicious guarantee was canceled. The examination confirmed that the electronic signature had been secretly used from Natalia, while the document sent in my name had been forged.

The Shevchuk company collapsed not because I wanted its destruction, but because there was no longer a single real order, no trust, and no money left there.

Natalia filed for divorce.

The first time she pronounced this word, her voice trembled.

The second time, it did not.

Three months later the court sentenced Maksim for fraud and violence, while Irina was held responsible for attacking and pressuring Natalia. I did not rejoice in the courtroom.

I simply held Natalia’s hand.

When everything was over, she asked me:

“What should I do now?”

“What you want.”

“I am afraid that I do not know what I want.”

“Then live peacefully first. Desires will return later.”

A week later she rented her own small apartment. On the first night she attached to the wall a white sheet on which her five-year-old daughter, Sofia, had drawn a colorful house.

Sofia had often stayed with us before. Maksim controlled the child too and told her that Grandma was too poor and too busy.

Now the child no longer knew whom she should believe.

One evening, while I was pouring warm milk in the kitchen, Sofia asked me:

“Grandma, are you rich?”

I smiled.

“Why are you asking?”

“Daddy said that you owned nothing. But all the big cars listen to you.”

Natalia stood at the door and silently watched us.

“Grandma is rich,” she said. “But she has something more important than money.”

Sofia widened her eyes.

“What?”

“The right to choose.”

That summer Natalia began working in the legal security department of my industrial group. Not because she was my daughter. On the contrary — she refused to use my surname at work and submitted her first report under her own surname.

Every morning she came at ten minutes past nine. She drank coffee without sugar. Before meetings she wrote the same sentence in a small notebook: “My voice is mine.”

Her hands gradually became free of trembling.

The first snow came in November. Natalia and I were standing by the factory window when white flakes began to fall in the yard.

I received a message on my phone.

From Maksim.

“Elena, I understand everything. My mother is ill. Natalia loves you. If you talk to her, perhaps she will think about returning. I will change.”

A second message came several minutes later.

“You also know that families should not fall apart over mistakes.”

Natalia saw my face.

“Is it him again?”

“Yes.”

“What will you answer?”

I extended the phone toward her.

She read for a long time, then shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

I did not delete the message. I only blocked the number.

That evening Natalia drank tea with me. Sofia sat on the floor and drew a snowy house with pencils. In the corner of the drawing she drew a small copper-colored key.

“What is this?” I asked.

!!!  Part 4 — My wife told me she stayed with a friend, but after her one short answer, the smile immediately disappeared from my face

“A door that only good people open,” she answered.

My old key pendant lay on the table. For years I had thought it was only a memory of my husband. Now I understood that on that day it had also kept something else — my decision not to stop in front of an open door at last.

Natalia picked up the pendant and enclosed it in her palm.

“Mom, may I keep it for a while?”

“For your whole life, if you want.”

She smiled for the first time the way she had smiled before the wedding.

Outside, the snow began to fall more heavily.

And inside, the door remained open.
