They Humiliated Me in Court While I Was Pregnant, but When the Judge Spoke My Surname, My Husband’s Smile Disappeared Immediately

Everyone in the courtroom was looking at me when my husband’s lover kicked me in the stomach and, instead of stopping her, my husband put his hand on her shoulder.

The blow was enough to make me stagger backward. I grabbed the edge of the table with my fingers, while my other hand clutched my stomach. The baby moved heavily inside. That was when I remembered the small copper pendant that I had hidden in the inner seam of my dress that morning. It had remained from my mother, and I had always believed that it would help me in difficult moments.

But at that moment it could not help me with anything.

My ring slipped from my swollen finger and rang sharply on the marble floor.

“Oh,” Sofia Kravets chuckled. “She came toward me herself.”

“Sofia, be quiet,” Maksim said, although there was irritation, not concern, in his voice.

“You saw it too, Maksim. I only warned her.”

For eight years Maksim Valchuk had never liked loud scenes. He liked only the kind of chaos he could control. Beside him stood a legal team hired for three million, in expensive suits and with cold faces. Sofia wore fifteen-centimeter shoes and a white dress, as if she had come not to a divorce, but to her own wedding.

I was thirty-four years old and eight months pregnant. At five twelve in the morning, I ironed a dark blue dress because I still believed that dignity mattered. Then I did not know how dearly that belief would cost me.

“Mrs. Valchuk, sit down,” said his lawyer, Andrei Kovalenko. “If you do not want medical assistance, do not turn an insignificant touch into a drama.”

“That was a kick,” my lawyer Irina said, rising to her feet. “A pregnant woman was kicked in the stomach.”

“Sit down,” the judge said calmly.

Nikolai Shevchuk never raised his voice. In childhood I knew that his silence was more dangerous than shouting. After my mother’s death he told me only one thing: “In times of pain, you will not need to pretend gratitude for others.”

Now he was sitting in front of me and looking at me as if he were seeing my pain for the first time. Yet nothing was written on his face.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi madre me llamó parásita durante la cena navideña, pero cuando mencioné una deuda familiar, mi padre dejó de respirar

Maksim leaned toward me.

“You arranged all this,” he whispered. “You always chose the right moment well.”

A small vein was throbbing at his temple. For the first time I saw that he was afraid.

“Stay away from me,” I told him.

He blinked.

Maksim understood shouting, tears, and bargaining. Calmness was a foreign language to him.

The judge looked through the papers and then looked at Maksim.

“Mr. Valchuk, do you know your wife’s maiden name?”

“What does that have to do with the case?”

“Answer me.”

Maksim looked toward me. We had lived together for eight years. He knew my blood type, my favorite wine, and my habit of changing my password, but he had never asked about my family.

“I think… Shevchuk,” he said.

Sofia’s smile disappeared.

The judge slowly took off his glasses. Then he put his hand on the case file and handed it to the secretary.

“Elene Valchuk, née Shevchuk…” he began.

Maksim leaned forward. And I realized that now there was not only one person in the courtroom waiting for an answer. Everyone was waiting to hear what my father would say…

My father was standing while the secretary took the file.

“Let it be entered into the record: Elene Valchuk, née Shevchuk, is my daughter. Therefore I recuse myself from hearing the case.”

Maksim’s face turned pale. Not only because of the relationship. He realized that the blow had already been seen by twelve witnesses and two court bailiffs.

“This is a spectacle!” Andrei exclaimed. “You knew all of this in advance!”

“No,” I told him. “I also found out who the judge was only after entering the courtroom.”

My father did not defend me with a speech and did not threaten Maksim. He only requested that the recording be preserved lawfully and that an ambulance be called.

That was exactly when Maksim made a mistake.

“Sofia did not mean to hit her,” he said. “I simply asked her to tap Elene on the hand so she would stop interfering with the hearing.”

Andrei quickly turned toward him.

“Do not say anything else,” he told him quietly.

But it was already too late. The camera was working, the witnesses were sitting there, and my fear was no longer alone.

Andrei put his hand on Maksim’s file, then slowly pulled it back. From his face I understood that there was something there about which I still knew nothing.

My father picked up his phone. An unknown number lit up on the screen. He listened and his face changed.

“Elene,” he said, “there is more than just a divorce behind this case…”

The phone call ended, but the color that had left my father’s face did not return.

“Who was it?” I asked.

He looked around the courtroom. Sofia had sunk into her chair and was nervously rubbing her hands. Maksim was still trying to maintain a confident expression.

“The person who hid the truth about your birth from me twenty-eight years ago,” my father answered.

Silence fell over the courtroom.

Maksim chuckled.

“Are we listening to family fairy tales now? This is a divorce case.”

“No,” my father said. “This is the reason you tried to leave my daughter without all her property.”

Andrei raised his head.

“Nikolai, you are no longer the judge hearing the case. Be careful.”

“That is precisely why I am saying this now, when I have recused myself from hearing the case,” my father replied. “And also because the document has already been transferred to another judge.”

He looked toward me.

“Elene, do you remember your mother’s copper pendant?”

I pressed my hand harder against my stomach. The pendant touched me beneath the dress, against my skin, like a cold, heavy point.

“What does it have to do with this?”

“Your mother left it in your cradle. It has a small lock inside. I could never open it, because the key disappeared with her.”

Maksim suddenly exclaimed:

“That thing has been lying in our house for years!”

I turned toward him.

“How do you know?”

His face immediately gave him away.

Sofia raised her head.

“Maksim, you said it was just an old piece of jewelry.”

“Be quiet.”

My father signaled to Irina. She took a small key and a folded document from her bag.

“I received this document this morning,” Irina said. “And its contents were to be opened only if Elene’s marriage broke up or her life was threatened.”

Andrei stood up.

“Do not open it here.”

!!!  Part 4 — A Few Minutes Before the Operation, My Husband Asked Me to Save His Mistress, but One Question from Me Changed Everyone’s Face in the Room

“Why?” I asked.

He could not answer me.

Irina opened the lock. A microcard fell out of the pendant. An old recording began on the screen. My mother’s voice sounded, tired and frightened.

“Nikolai, if Elene ever hears this recording, know that the Valchuk family knew who she was from the first day of our marriage. They wanted to destroy your career through her…”

Maksim pushed his chair backward.

In the recording my mother pronounced one more name. My husband’s father’s name.

Then copies of bank transfers, signatures, and a plan drawn up one week before my marriage appeared on the screen.

I looked at Maksim.

“You knew?”

“No,” he said, but no one believed his voice anymore.

At that moment a woman dressed in black appeared at the courtroom door. She held a new file in her hands.

“Elene Shevchuk?” she asked. “I am from the prosecutor’s office. We have an order to search your husband’s company.”

Maksim stood up, although he still did not know that the worst news was waiting for him not in the courtroom, but at the maternity clinic…
