That evening my father raised his hand in front of everyone to hit me, and two months later my husband gave flowers to his beloved.
Applause could still be heard in the hall when Adrian Hayes carried a bouquet to Claire Monroe.
“Congratulations.”
That was all he said.
Claire took the flowers with both hands and smiled as if the whole city had fallen at her feet. A silver bracelet gleamed on her wrist, with a small glass eye attached to it with every movement. I remembered this bracelet well. It belonged to my mother.
Claire looked toward me.
Only for one second.
But that one second told me everything.
Adrian had not noticed me yet. He stood on the stage, in front of the cameras, among producers and actors. Behind his back, the name of Claire’s new film was written on a huge screen. A few months earlier Claire had been an aspiring director who had returned from abroad. Now everyone was trying to stand beside her, because the Hayes Group’s money was invested in her film.
My husband’s money.
Two months earlier, when I first found out about it, I waited at home until one in the morning. Cold tea stood on the kitchen table, and beside it was a photograph of my mother’s old bracelet, which I had taken from my father’s house. That evening I was again trying to remember how one family could take a person away so easily.
Adrian came almost at midnight.
“You invested in Claire’s film?” I asked.
He stopped beside the door and slowly took off his gloves.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It is a work matter, Sofia.”
“She is your former lover.”
Adrian sighed, as if I were asking a childish question.
“I cannot build the whole company around your personal resentments.”
“This is not only resentment. You know what her mother did to my family.”
“I know that many things happened in the past.”
“She drove my mother out of the house. Claire sat in my place in my father’s house. And now you are standing on her side too.”
Adrian looked away.
“The project is profitable.”
It was then that I understood that, to him, my pain had always been only a number that did not fit into the account.
That night I told him:
“If you do not withdraw the investment, we will separate.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Are you really going to destroy the marriage because of one investment?”
“You called it an investment yourself.”
He did not answer me. He only told me that Claire was his past and that I had known this before the marriage.
But sometimes the past comes alive again and opens the door.
That evening, when Adrian gave Claire flowers, I left the hall. Near the exit, a familiar woman waved to me.
“Sofia, aren’t you staying for dinner?”
“I can’t stay.”
Adrian noticed me then. His eyes immediately caught up with me, as if he had not expected me to be there.
“Sofia, wait.”
I did not stop.
He quickly passed me and grabbed my wrist. His fingers were cold.
“Why did you come?”
“Because this city belongs to your company, not to your former lover.”
“Don’t make a scene now.”
“You made the scene, Adrian. I was only watching.”
Claire stood behind him. Her mother, Vanessa, had a hand on her shoulder and wore an expression as if my calm were a personal insult to her.
“Sofia, perhaps we should go home and talk?” Adrian said.
For the first time, I did not feel the desire to explain anything to him.
“Fine. Go home.”
“And you?”
“I am not coming there anymore.”
His hand loosened from me.
That night I went to a hotel. In the morning I found a message from the lawyer Elene Dvali: “I received the documents. We urgently need to meet.”
I did not know what documents she was talking about. I only knew that for three weeks I had been quietly checking our joint accounts and could not explain several transfers.
At ten in the morning, in the hotel’s small room, Elene placed a black leather folder on the table.
“Sofia, before you open this, you must know that there will be no turning back.”
“I do not want to go back anyway.”
Elene opened the clasp and reached toward the first sheet. At that very moment someone knocked hard on the door…
The knocking on the door was so strong that the glass of water on the table trembled.
Elene immediately closed the folder.
“Who is it?” she asked.
There was no answer.
They knocked a second time.
I leaned against the small metal coat rack standing in the corner of the room. My hands were trembling, but fear was no longer the old fear that Adrian’s angry face brought. Something else was awakening inside me now—the feeling that someone very much needed my silence.
Elene picked up the phone.
“I’m calling security.”
“Not yet,” I told her.
“Sofia, this is not a game.”
“I know.”
The lock on the door turned. The handle slowly went down, but Elene quickly ran over and fastened the chain from inside.
“Who are you?”
A man’s voice sounded from behind the door.
“Ms. Dvali, I am from the Hayes Group. Mr. Adrian asks you to stop this meeting immediately.”
Elene looked at me.
“They already know.”
I sat down on the chair.
“He knows I am here, but he does not know what we have.”
“Maybe that is exactly why they came.”
The man behind the door said again:
“Ms. Bennett, legal proceedings may be initiated against you for illegally obtaining the company’s internal information.”
Coldness caught in my throat.
“I stole nothing.”
“Explain that in court.”
Elene called someone by phone. A few minutes later security came, and silence descended behind the door. When we opened it, only Adrian’s security employee was standing there.
He held a small white envelope in his hand.
“Mr. Hayes sent this to you.”
Elene did not take the envelope.
“Tell him to send everything through a lawyer.”
The man placed the envelope on the table.
“This is only a warning.”
“A warning of what?” I asked.
He looked directly at me.
“That even after the dissolution of a marriage there are secrets whose disclosure will harm both of you.”
The door closed.
Elene looked at the envelope for a long time.
“Don’t open it.”
“Why?”
“It could be a provocation.”
“I am provoked already.”
I opened the envelope. Inside there was only one sheet: a copy of a contract on which my signature could be seen. The document confirmed that I had agreed for part of my inherited money to be transferred to finance Claire’s film.
The sheet fell from my hand.
“That is not my signature.”
Elene took the copy and examined it with a magnifying glass.
“No. This is a poorly made forgery.”
“But the bank accepted it.”
“That is exactly why it is important.”
I looked at her.
“How much money was transferred?”
Elene waited several seconds before answering.
“Eighteen million.”
The room seemed to grow smaller.
I had saved this money for my grandmother’s treatment. My mother left it to me before her death. For years I had not spent it, because I knew I would receive nothing else from my family.
“Did Adrian know about this account?”
“It was mentioned in the joint financial documents during the marriage.”
“So he took my money and gave it to Claire.”
“We cannot yet say that he personally signed it.”
Elene took a small memory device out of her bag.
“An employee is providing this to us. He said that the files were created in the transfers department in Adrian’s presence.”
“Does a recording exist?”
“It does, but I have not listened to it completely yet.”
That same evening we went to his office. Rain fell outside the windows, while the old wooden clock standing on the desk ticked sharply every second.
The recording was turned on.
At first indistinct sounds could be heard. Then I recognized Adrian’s voice.
“Do not tell Sofia anything until the film’s first revenue comes in.”
My heart struck hard once.
Then Claire’s voice was heard.
“If she finds out, she will take everything from us.”
Adrian answered calmly:
“She cannot take anything from us if she thinks she signed it herself.”
Elene turned off the recording.
For a long time I could not breathe.
“Is this enough?”
“For a beginning.”
“Did Claire know too?”
“The recording shows that.”
That night I called Adrian for the first time.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Where are you?”
“Tell me why you used my money.”
Silence.
Then his voice sounded, calm and cold.
“Who told you?”
That answer was clearer than anything.
“So it is true.”
“Sofia, come back home. I will explain everything.”
“No. Now you come to where I am.”
“You do not understand what consequences this will have.”
“For the first time, I do.”
He said nothing for a long time.
Then he told me quietly:
“If you choose this path, Claire will not sink alone. You will take your father with you too.”
At that moment I understood that this money had not been used only for the film. Someone had turned the family game begun years ago into one large network.
Elene sent me a letter the next morning.
“An additional document came from the bank. The transfer indicated in it is connected to your mother. Come immediately.”
When I arrived at the office, Elene was pale. A new folder lay in front of her.
“Sofia, here is your mother’s signature.”
“What does it say?”
Elene turned the folder toward me.
“It says that the money left for you was not only an inheritance at all. Part of it disappeared from the Hayes Group years ago…”
“…and my father took this money?” I asked.
Elene slowly nodded.
“Not only your father. The money was part of a fund created in your mother’s name. Adrian was a supervisory member of the fund.”
I stared at the document. My mother’s signature was truly visible there, but the text did not resemble her wishes. For years money from the fund had been transferred to a company belonging to Vanessa Monroe.
“Did Mother know this?”
“Look at the last page.”
It said: “If anything happens to me, my daughter, Sofia Bennett, is to be considered the true owner of the money.”
My fingers crumpled the sheet so tightly that the corner tore.
“Was my mother’s death accidental?”
Elene hid her gaze.
“We cannot say that yet. But there is one important discrepancy in the hospital records.”
At that moment someone knocked on the door. This time Adrian entered. Claire stood behind him, and in Claire’s hand the same silver bracelet gleamed.
Adrian looked around the room.
“We should have talked alone.”
“You have already talked to me alone for long enough,” I answered.
Claire gave an ironic chuckle.
“You always turned everything into a tragedy.”
“Even stealing my money?”
Her smile disappeared.
Adrian put his hand on the table.
“No one stole any money. It was a temporary transfer.”
“With my forged signature?”
“The document was technically prepared.”
“And your voice is on the recording.”
Adrian’s face changed in one second.
Claire looked at him.
“What recording?”
“Be quiet, Claire,” Adrian told her.
“You said everything was under control.”
I turned on my phone and played the recording in the room.
“Do not tell Sofia anything until the film’s first revenue comes in.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
Then Claire’s voice was heard:
“If she finds out, she will take everything from us.”
Claire collapsed into a chair.
“It is edited.”
“The bank employee gave us the recording,” Elene said. “The original is in a secure storage facility.”
Adrian looked toward me.
“Sofia, you do not know what was happening in this family.”
“Now I know that you used my money for Claire.”
“I saved the company.”
“With my mother’s money?”
Claire suddenly cried out:
“You promised me that this money was for my film and not to cover old debts!”
Silence descended in the room.
Adrian looked at her as if he were seeing her for the first time.
“Claire.”
“No, I will not be quiet anymore. You told me Sofia would find out nothing because her father had an agreement with us.”
I stood up.
“My father too?”
Claire pressed her lips together, but it was already too late.
Elene opened a second folder.
“Robert Bennett received money from Vanessa Monroe’s company during the last seven years. In exchange, he signed documents that transferred the right to manage your mother’s fund to others.”
My family stood in one room, but for the first time I could no longer call anyone family.
Adrian said quietly:
“I was going to fix this.”
“When? When the film brought in money? Or when I finally disappeared?”
He could not find an answer.
Elene picked up the phone.
“The documents have already been handed over to the investigation. The accounts have been temporarily frozen.”
Adrian went to the window. His shoulders, which had always seemed unshakable to me, were burdened for the first time.
“You will regret this.”
“Maybe.”
“You will lose everything.”
“I have already lost what I no longer wanted to preserve.”
That evening Elene told me that an official complaint would be filed the next day. I left the office and found rain in the street.
The phone rang immediately.
It was an unknown number.
“Am I speaking to Sofia Bennett?” a man’s voice asked. “I was your mother’s doctor.”
I stopped.
“My mother’s doctor?”
“Yes. I could not tell you then, but a change was made in her medical record after her death.”
“Who changed it?”
The man exhaled.
“Adrian Hayes’s signature is not on the document. But there is a video that was filmed in the hospital corridor that night.”
“What can be seen in the video?”
“Your father. And a person you do not expect to see at all.”
He told me an address and hung up.
I was still looking at the phone when a message arrived from Adrian: “Before you watch the video, you should know that your mother’s death did not happen the way you were told…”
