Part 4 — When I Asked My Unemployed Husband to Work, My Mother-in-Law Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone, but Her Smile Disappeared at Mateo’s Words

The phone remained in my hand, but for several seconds I could not understand anything. It was as if I heard every sound under water.

“Tomorrow morning?” I barely asked.

“If we do not stop the document immediately,” the lawyer replied, “a bank representative will come to your address.”

Arturo looked at my face and understood that I had heard everything.

“Mariana, it is not the way you think.”

“Then how is it?”

He opened his mouth, but could not find an answer.

Teresa stood up. The back of the chair hit the wall and the candle fell over.

“Arturo, tell me you did not mortgage this house.”

“Mother, be quiet.”

“Tell me!”

Sandra put the papers together.

“Mariana, a loan was taken in your name. They found a copy of your identity document in the old insurance folder, and the signature was forged.”

Arturo covered his face with his hands.

“I was going to fix it.”

“When?” I asked. “When the bank took away the children’s beds?”

“I needed money.”

“For what?”

He looked at Teresa.

Teresa took one step backward.

“I knew nothing.”

Arturo lowered his eyes.

“I invested it in online trading. I thought everything would come back.”

“Three years?” Sandra’s voice became harsher. “You lied to the family for three years?”

“I simply made bad decisions.”

“No,” I told him. “Decisions are bad when you do not know the result. You knew everything and still did it.”

Mateo stood beside me. His small hand was tightly holding my wrist.

We did not return home that night. Sandra took the children to her apartment, and I went directly to the lawyer’s office. Until four in the morning we gathered bank statements, messages, old receipts, and the emails in which Arturo promised me that “from tomorrow he would put everything in order.”

The next morning the bank representative came.

But he was not alone.

Two investigators stood behind him.

Arturo opened the door and for the first time saw that his lies already had an address, a seal, and the force of law.

“Mr. Mendes,” one of the investigators said, “we need to speak with you about the forged signature and the illegal use of the loan money.”

Arturo called me immediately.

“Mariana, please tell them that this is a misunderstanding.”

“I can no longer tell them that.”

“You are my wife.”

“That is exactly why I protected you longer than I should have protected you.”

I had not understood what it meant to hear a person’s own words from someone else’s mouth until the investigator read Arturo’s messages in front of me.

“Mariana will not understand anything.”

“Mother will say that no one can take the house in her name.”

“If I gain a little more time, everything will be settled.”

These words belonged to Arturo. But in the room where the investigator was reading them, they sounded for the first time as they really were—not the plea of a desperate man, but deliberate betrayal.

Arturo raised his head.

“I did not mean it that way.”

“But that is what you wrote,” the investigator told him.

His lawyer refused to continue the case that same day. On the phone he said only one sentence:

“I cannot defend a person who lies even to his own lawyer.”

Teresa called me several times. The first time she was crying. The second time she was angry. The third time she was silent.

“Mariana,” she finally told me, “I thought you were destroying my son.”

“You never asked what I was carrying.”

“Now I know.”

“No, Teresa. Now you only see the result.”

Returning home was the hardest thing.

The living room was the same: the children’s drawings on the wall, the half-dried basil by the window, and Arturo’s motorcycle keys in the corner of the table. But his presence in the room now resembled emptiness.

Mateo put his bag on the floor.

“Dad will not live here anymore?”

I knelt in front of him.

“Not for a while.”

“Forever?”

Children understand lies the fastest.

“I do not know what the next days will be like. But I know that you and Lucia will be safe.”

Mateo rested his head on my shoulder.

“That day I said it to Grandma because she treated you badly.”

“I know.”

“Everything was not written on that paper.”

I froze.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Llegué antes de lo previsto y encontré a mi madre de rodillas; cuando mi esposa me vio, su sonrisa desapareció

“What do you mean?”

He took from his pocket the small folded sheet that he had held on the birthday.

“It was not a school assignment. Dad’s phone opened accidentally. There I saw a message in which he wrote that you would sign because ‘for the sake of the children you would help me anyway.’ I copied his words so that I would not forget them.”

I took the paper.

In childish, uneven letters it said: “Do not tell Mom. She will believe me anyway.”

That sentence hurt me more strongly than the bank’s warning.

I hugged my son.

“You should not have carried this alone.”

“But you were carrying it alone too.”

I could not answer that.

Three weeks later the court stopped collection of the loan. The forged signature was confirmed, part of the bank funds was returned, and the investigation against Arturo continued. I did not attend every hearing. Sometimes hearing your own truth is so exhausting that you no longer have strength even to prove it.

Teresa sold the house and paid the debt. For the first time she took additional work at a small pastry shop. Once she told me that all her life she had protected Arturo as a “boy” and had not noticed how he became the man who led everyone into lies.

I did not blame her.

But I did not begin correcting her crime either.

Two months later we moved to a new neighborhood. I rented a small apartment on the other side of the city, where sunlight fell directly onto the kitchen floor in the morning. At the clinic, my supervisor offered me an administrator position. The salary was enough, the work was more difficult, but for the first time I knew that my work was building our life and not covering someone else’s lie.

Lucia drew four figures on the wall: me, her, Mateo, and a small yellow sun. Arturo was not in the drawing.

“Why did you not draw Dad?” I asked.

She shrugged.

“Because there is light here now.”

The first snow came in December. Mateo stood by the window and caught snowflakes in his palm. Snow was rare in Guadalajara, so the children ran into the yard as if the sky had brought them a gift.

!!!  Part 4 — Every morning I saw my neighbor’s enormous garbage bags, but that morning one action of mine suddenly changed her face

That same evening I received a message from Arturo.

“I miss you. I am going to the doctor. I understood everything. May I come at least once?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“Meeting the children will be possible only when a specialist and the court consider it safe. Returning to my home is no longer being considered.”

He replied within a few minutes.

“You are still my wife.”

I put the phone down.

This time I gave no answer.

On a small wooden shelf in the kitchen lay the motorcycle keys that Arturo had left that night. Earlier, their sound when the door opened had filled me with hope. Now they were simply two small pieces of metal that had closed one life for me.

Mateo put his folded paper on the shelf.

“Should this stay here, Mom?”

I looked at the paper, then at the window, where white snowflakes were silently falling on the city.

“Let it stay,” I said. “But we are looking forward.”

That night I slept for the first time without being responsible for saving anyone anymore.

No one knocked on the door anymore.

Only snow was coming.

Missed the beginning?
