When my husband met me in the restaurant’s closed hall together with his lover, I still could not imagine that I would see that woman’s name in his boss’s phone.
In Monterrey, San Pedro Garza García, that evening the rain was drizzling finely. Drops of water ran down the restaurant’s glass door, while inside the smell of roasted meat and expensive perfume mixed together. I thought we were celebrating Mauricio’s promotion. After eight years of marriage, such a peaceful dinner had become a rarity.
When I opened the door of the closed hall, that woman was already sitting beside him. So close that her hand rested on the back of Mauricio’s chair.
Mauricio did not stand up.
“You arrived on time, Elena,” the woman said. “Mauricio told me you are always punctual.”
There was such confidence in her voice, as if I had entered her own house without permission. Heavy crystal glasses stood on the table. In one of them, ice cubes were slowly cracking.
“Who is she?” I asked.
The woman chuckled.
“He really didn’t tell you anything? I am the woman he has been living with for the last few months.”
Cold spilled into my stomach. Still, I pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Mauricio, what does this mean?”
He looked at his watch, as if he were late for a meeting.
“I don’t want to talk at home. Mateo must not hear our arguments. That is why I called you here. I want us to settle everything peacefully.”
Mateo was seven years old. That morning he had attached to his schoolbag a small wooden whale that I had painted for him by hand. When leaving the house, he told me that in the evening we would celebrate Dad’s promotion with a cake. That word stuck in my throat.
“You want a divorce?” I asked.
“It will be better for both of us.”
“For both of us? Or for you and your new life?”
The woman rested her chin on her hand.
“Let’s not complicate things. Mauricio has prepared a very decent offer.”
He placed a folder on the table. The brown leather surface had a small scratch, exactly where Mauricio had drawn lines with a pen in childhood. It was his folder, the folder of our home, our bills, our life. Now it contained the price of my life.
“You sign, you receive the money, I will pay Mateo’s support, and we will not argue over custody,” he said. “If you go to court, you will lose months.”
“And who is she?”
Mauricio exhaled.
“Camila. We know each other from the past. Before I met you, we almost got married.”
Camila smiled.
“Mauricio helped me at work too. Now his position is strong enough that nobody would care about this story.”
“You work in the same company?” I asked.
“Yes. And before you decide to make a scandal, remember that my husband is now vice-president.”
Husband.
She said that word as if Mauricio were already her property.
Then I looked at her face for the second time. Thin gold earrings. A small scar near her left eyebrow. And that smile, which I had once seen on a phone screen when Arturo Salgado accidentally left his pictures on our kitchen table.
I already knew that woman.
Not beside Mauricio.
In Arturo’s phone.
Mauricio noticed my changed face.
“Elena, don’t tell me you are going to make a scene.”
And for the first time I smiled.
I looked at Camila and said calmly:
“You have hidden one important thing from Mauricio. You are still seeing his boss.”
Camila’s fingers froze on the glass. Mauricio moved his chair so sharply that a piercing sound rang out on the floor.
“What are you talking about?” he shouted.
I took the phone from my bag and lit up the screen. Before I could open the file, Mauricio grabbed me by the wrist…
Mauricio’s fingers gripped my wrist so tightly that the metal of my watch cut my skin. In his eyes I saw not anger for the first time, but fear.
“Give me the phone,” he said.
“Let go of me.”
“Elena, don’t make me call security.”
Camila quickly stood up. Her chair struck the table and red wine spilled onto the white tablecloth.
“Mauricio, what does she mean?” she asked.
“Nothing. She is simply trying to turn our divorce into blackmail.”
I freed my hand and pressed the phone to my chest.
“If I wanted blackmail, I would not have come here alone.”
“Then why did you come?” Camila asked me.
“Because I wanted to understand when you stopped using Mauricio and when you started using Arturo.”
Outside the hall, the sound of dishes could be heard. A waiter knocked lightly on the door, but Mauricio shouted harshly at him not to come in.
The smile disappeared from Camila’s face.
“You know nothing.”
“I know that Arturo saved your photographs on his own phone. I know that you are wearing the same earrings in that photograph. I know that the photograph was taken on the day Mauricio told me he was staying late with Arturo.”
Mauricio struck the table with his fist.
“Where did you get that photograph?”
“Arturo himself left his phone with me. That evening he came home with you. He was drunk, barely standing on his feet. I connected the phone to the charger, and a message appeared on the screen. It was not the face of your lover there, but Camila’s name.”
Camila put her hand on the chair.
“Arturo meant nothing to me.”
“Then why did you write to him that the divorce papers for Mauricio were already ready and that afterward everything would end up in your hands?”
Silence fell.
I had not said that sentence by accident. For the last two weeks I had hardly been able to sleep. On the night I saw Arturo’s phone, I did not save only the photograph. I also took copies of the messages. At that time I still thought Mauricio had become involved in something dangerous. I began copying his folders, comparing the bank transactions with the company’s accounts, and spending nights in our kitchen.
The main suspicion was connected with one thing: Camila had not been hired by the same company by accident.
“You forced him to offer me money?” Camila looked at Mauricio.
“Be quiet.”
“You told me that Arturo no longer trusted anyone. You told me that after the divorce his share would pass into Veronica’s hands.”
Mauricio lost color.
“Elena, let’s go home and talk.”
“No. Now we will talk here.”
I took a small memory card from my bag and put it on the table. On the black plastic surface it had a white mark the size of a fingernail. I had taken that card from Mateo’s old camera when I transferred the camera recordings at home.
“You turned our house into a surveillance system?” Mauricio asked me.
“No. Your lawyer told me that without evidence they would laugh at me in court. So I created evidence.”
“What is on it?” Camila asked in a whisper.
“I won’t tell you yet.”
At that moment the door opened. A tall man with a black umbrella entered. It was Arturo Salgado. Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the floor, and he held another folder in his hand.
Mauricio immediately stepped back.
“What are you doing here?”
Arturo did not even look at him. He was looking at Camila.
“Because today I found out for the first time that I was not the only one who had asked for a divorce from my wife.”
Camila dried her lips.
“Arturo, I swear, it isn’t like that.”
“Then it will be good if we listen to this recording to the end.”
He placed a small voice recorder on the table. The device’s red light blinked.
Mauricio leaned toward me.
“Elena, if you turn this on, you will take Mateo’s father away from him.”
I was looking at his face and realized that for the first time he was telling the truth, though not in the way he himself thought.
Arturo reached toward the button. Everyone in the room stopped breathing. His finger touched the device, and the first recorded voice said…
First the clinking of glasses came from the recording, then Camila’s laughter.
“If we make Elena sign, Mauricio will receive half of the apartment and we will no longer need to hide him,” she said.
I recognized Mauricio’s voice immediately.
“Arturo will find out nothing until the divorce is finished. Camila will keep him occupied, and I will convince my wife that everything is simply infidelity.”
It was as if the air disappeared from the room.
Camila covered her mouth with both hands.
“That is not my voice… It is edited.”
Arturo looked at Mauricio for the first time.
“Continue.”
In the recording Mauricio said:
“When Arturo returns the controlling share of the company to Veronica, Camila will finally ask him to marry her. And we will transfer the money from the account hidden as consulting expenses.”
The recording stopped.
Mauricio stood motionless. His face became gray.
“This is impossible,” he said.
“No,” I answered. “What was impossible was that for eight years I called every one of your lies love.”
Arturo put his hands on the table.
“That voice is yours, Mauricio. The date is visible too. The place, the hotel room, and the time. My security team has already checked the recording.”
Camila turned toward him.
“You told me you only wanted a divorce from Elena.”
“Because otherwise you would not marry me,” Mauricio said.
“I loved you.”
“You wanted Arturo’s money.”
Arturo smiled bitterly.
“And you wanted to lose both of them.”
I took documents from my bag. There were copies of bank transfers, statements from the company’s hidden account, and messages in which Mauricio sent Camila his address.
“Where did you find all this?” Arturo asked.
“In your house, on her work computer, and in the folder lying in front of me.”
Mauricio looked at the folder.
“Did you sign this?”
“No. I only brought it so I could see how cheaply you valued my seven years of patience.”
Arturo took out his phone.
“My lawyer is on the way. These documents and the recording will be handed over to the police.”
Camila’s knees gave way and she sank into a chair.
“Arturo, please, listen to me.”
“I listened to you for eight months. Today I heard the truth for the first time.”
Mauricio came toward me.
“Elena, come, let’s go home. Mateo does not need to hear this.”
“What Mateo needs most is for his mother to stop living in fear.”
“Are you using my son against me?”
“No. You used him yourself when you told me that if I went to court, I would lose him.”
At that moment my phone rang. The number of lawyer Sofia appeared on the screen. She told me only one sentence:
“Elena, you must get home urgently. Mateo’s school called me and said that some man tried to take him.”
My heart froze.
“Who was it?”
Sofia was silent for several seconds.
“He called in Mauricio’s name. But it was not Mauricio.”
I looked at my husband. He understood everything too.
Mauricio’s phone rang immediately. He looked at the screen and stepped back.
The call displayed only one word: “Veronica.”
He answered. A woman’s quiet voice came from the other side:
“If you want Mateo to remain alive and unharmed, bring Elena alone.”
The phone fell from Mauricio’s hand…
