My husband threw me out of the house with our newborn, and three years later he came to my office — and his face suddenly went pale

My twelve-day-old daughter was lying on a hospital bed when Daniel placed divorce papers on the blanket and told me that in his life I was only dead weight.

At first I could not understand his words. After the cesarean section I was still barely breathing, the stitches on my abdomen were burning, while little Nora slept peacefully beside me. A small bronze bell hung on her bag and quietly jingled with every movement.

“Our child is not even two weeks old,” I whispered.

Daniel did not even look at Nora.

“That is exactly why I waited this long.”

At that moment the bedroom door opened.

Victoria entered.

She was wearing Daniel’s white shirt, was barefoot, and moved around my house so freely, as if she had always lived there. When she stopped beside the bed, she looked over my things and then smiled at Daniel.

“You told me that everything would be over before the baby was born,” she said.

Daniel put his arm around her waist.

“I know.”

My hands were shaking so much that my fingernails dug into the edges of the document.

“How long?” I asked.

“Almost a year.”

At that moment every late meeting, switched-off phone, and pointless business trip turned into one great lie.

“I worked on building this company too,” I told him. “I left my career because of the pregnancy. I found your first investors.”

Daniel laughed.

“Then you were useful. Now you are only an expense.”

His laughter proved more painful than the burning of the stitches.

“I nearly died when I gave birth to our child.”

“And?” he asked coldly. “I need people who create value.”

Then he pointed toward the door.

“You have one hour.”

I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw the glass lamp standing on the table against the wall. But Nora sighed and the bronze bell lightly jingled again. Then I realized that I had no right to fall apart for her.

Daniel scattered my bank cards, company passes, credit cards, and house keys on the floor. He handed everything to Victoria.

“You have nothing left here.”

“In my own house?” I asked.

“This house belongs to the one who makes money.”

Fifty-eight minutes later I walked down the stairs. I held a suitcase in one hand, Nora was pressed against my other arm, and I heard the sound of the little bell from the bag. November wind was blowing outside.

The door locked behind my back.

That night I stayed with my friend Mari, while the baby lay against my chest the whole way. In the morning, when Nora was sleeping, I saw my own face in the mirror and told myself only one thing:

“I will never knock on that door again.”

Three years passed.

My consulting business, begun in a small rented room in the southern part of Chicago, had now become one of the most influential investment companies. I still woke up early, made Nora breakfast, and every morning checked the same little bronze bell on her bag.

One Monday, a few minutes before ten in the morning, my assistant Sarah entered the office. She was holding a thick folder.

“Your meeting has arrived.”

“Who is it?”

She put the folder on the desk.

“Sterling Technologies. They have several weeks left before bankruptcy. They want a rescue plan worth hundreds of millions.”

I had not yet read the surname, but my heart already knew.

I slowly turned the last page of the folder.

Daniel Carter.

Victoria Hayes.

“Elena, should we postpone the meeting?” Sarah asked.

I took the folder’s bronze-colored clasp between my fingers and looked toward the door. On its other side sat the two people who had once taken my and my child’s future into their hands.

“No,” I said. “Let them in.”

Sarah went toward the door. She lowered the lock. Daniel’s voice sounded from the corridor, but the door had not yet opened. And I reached for the last sheet hidden in the folder and lifted its edge…

The sheet froze between my fingers.

“Mrs. Morgan, they are very nervous,” Sarah told me. “Daniel asked twice whether you really are the managing partner.”

“Open the door.”

Daniel entered in an expensive coat, but his old confidence was no longer written on his face. Victoria came behind him, holding the same company’s golden folder.

“Mrs. Morgan, thank you for receiving us,” Daniel said.

I did not get up.

“Sit down.”

Victoria looked around the room, as if searching for something familiar. On the wall hung Nora’s drawing: a small house, a big sun, and three figures, one of which had been crossed out.

“Your fund is our only hope,” Daniel began. “We can get everything back.”

“Everything?” I repeated.

He did not understand why I smiled.

They presented debts, lost contracts, and the banks’ refusal. Victoria read the numbers, while Daniel avoided my eyes. Finally he reached his hand toward me.

“We do not want to waste your time. We simply need a partner who will see our potential.”

He said it in the same voice with which he had told me three years earlier that I no longer created value.

“I always saw the potential,” I said.

For the first time Daniel looked at me.

His eyes narrowed.

“This voice of yours…”

Sarah knocked on the door and brought in a small wooden box. On the box was a sign in the shape of a bronze bell.

“It is time,” she told me.

Daniel stood up.

“What is happening?”

I unlocked the box, but had not yet taken out the item placed inside.

“Now you will understand why I summoned you here…”

Now you will understand why I summoned you here…

I took a small memory device out of the box and motioned to Sarah. A hidden screen on the wall lit up. Daniel looked astonished at first, while Victoria became irritated.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Your company’s internal recordings from three years ago.”

A hospital bedroom appeared on the screen. I was lying on the bed, Nora was resting against my chest, and Daniel was standing in front of the camera. He had installed hidden cameras in that house, supposedly for safety. One of the devices had remained on the bookshelf.

In the recording I heard my own voice.

“Our child is not even two weeks old.”

Then Daniel’s voice sounded.

“Now you are only an expense.”

Victoria appeared on the screen, in the same white shirt.

“Sign it before she regains her strength,” she was saying. “We have already transferred everything from the company accounts.”

Daniel chuckled then.

“In a few weeks she will not be able to claim anything here.”

Silence fell over the room.

Daniel slowly sat down.

“You obtained this illegally,” Victoria said.

“No,” Sarah replied. “This recording was confirmed by a court examination. The audio files have a timestamp, while a copy of the video was stored on your own server.”

Daniel looked toward me.

“You… you are Elena?”

“I was three years ago too.”

His face emptied. Victoria put her hand on the table, but her fingers were shaking so much that her ring struck the wood.

!!!  Mi abuelo salió del hospital sin que nadie fuera por él, pero al pedirme un desvío mi padre dejó de contestar

“This is impossible,” she whispered.

“What was impossible was that I thought your betrayal would destroy only the marriage. That night you transferred millions from the company accounts with documents forged in my name. You threw me out of the house so that I would no longer be a witness.”

Daniel jumped up.

“I will explain everything.”

“No. Now I will explain to you.”

I took the audit report out of the folder. Specialists from my new fund had quietly conducted an inspection in the company. It turned out that their debts were not only the result of bad business. Part of the money was in Victoria’s personal account.

Victoria turned pale.

“It was a temporary loan.”

“That was not planned to be returned,” I said.

Daniel grabbed the chair.

“You want a deal, right? How much do I have to pay?”

“You can no longer pay for anything with money.”

At that moment my phone rang. The lawyer’s number appeared on the screen. I answered.

“Elena, the prosecutor’s office called me,” he said. “They have received additional evidence. But this is still not the worst news. The bank has just informed Daniel that all the company’s accounts have been frozen, while the signature found in the second folder may also affect Victoria’s case…”

Daniel understood from my face that his last path had closed precisely then…
