Five Armed Men Pinned My Boss Against the Wall, but Their Leader Suddenly Went Pale When He Heard My Name

That evening, five armed men surrounded Victoria Sterling, while one of them decided his own fate by mentioning the person most precious to me.

“Get away, cleaner,” their leader told me, pressing Victoria’s wrist against the marble wall. “If you want your little girl not to grow up without a father.”

The mop fell from my hand.

At that moment, everything in the room changed.

Not when I noticed the shape of a weapon beneath his accomplice’s jacket. Nor when the red lights on the lobby cameras went out simultaneously. Everything changed at the moment he mentioned Lily.

My name is Daniel Carter. I am forty-one years old, a widower, and the father of an eight-year-old girl. For two years at Sterling International, everyone knew me as the quiet cleaner whose surname was embroidered on the pocket of his gray uniform.

The left wheel squeaked every third rotation. The employees already recognized this sound. And that was exactly what I wanted — for people not to pay attention to me.

At night, when the offices emptied, I wiped coffee rings from desks, emptied trash bins, and erased fingerprints from windows. Where directors distributed millions, I walked silently.

Grant Harlan, the financial director, was especially irritated by seeing me.

One Monday, at nine in the morning, he beckoned to me with his fingers.

“Danny, come here.”

“My name is Daniel.”

He pointed to a small stain beside his expensive shoe.

“You missed this.”

I looked at the stain, then at him.

“I’ll report it to the governor.”

His assistant hid a cough. After that, Grant no longer looked me in the eyes.

Victoria was different. At thirty-eight, she reclaimed alone the company inherited from her father and proved to the board of elderly directors that her surname was not her only virtue.

She remembered everyone’s name.

Mine too.

“Good night, Daniel,” she would tell me when I cleaned her office.

Those simple words were never simple to me.

Lily was waiting for me at home. Pencils lay on the kitchen table, and cardboard planets hung on the wall.

“Dad, Pluto has been treated unfairly again,” she would tell me.

“I’ll call the space service again.”

Her laughter was my only real salary.

I had another life before. For fifteen years I protected diplomats, witnesses, and people whose enemies could hire killers. In some closed circles they called me “the Shield.”

And I buried that life when Emily, my wife, became ill and I learned about her death by telephone while sitting in an armored car in a foreign country. Lily was four then.

Since then I had not touched a weapon.

Working at Sterling was peaceful. Victoria quietly paid for Lily’s school tablet once. I asked nothing. In return, I filled her coffee machine every day.

On Thursday, at half past seven in the evening, Chicago rain struck the glass doors. A black car stopped at the entrance and five men got out. None of them had an umbrella. They did not look like businessmen.

The security desk was empty.

The cameras went out.

Only static could be heard on the radio.

When Victoria stepped out of the elevator, the leader grabbed her by the arm.

“The company has something our employer needs,” he told her.

I left the cart.

“Let her go.”

!!!  My husband told me to stay home, but at the gala one unfamiliar guest suddenly wiped the smile from Blake’s face

“Get back to the floor, cleaner.”

Then he mentioned Lily.

I twisted his wrist so that his face struck the marble. I sent him into the second column. I knocked the weapon from the third man’s hand and pinned him to the floor.

Rain tapped on the windows.

The two remaining men froze.

One elderly attacker looked me in the face and stepped back.

“No… this is impossible.”

“What happened?” the leader asked.

The old man swallowed.

“This is Carter.”

“And then?”

“Daniel Carter. ‘The Shield.’”

Victoria slowly turned toward me.

That night my invisible life ended. The leader took a small folder from his pocket, put it on the table, and told me:

“If that is so, you will see for yourself why we came.”

His hand moved toward the folder’s lock…

His fingers touched the lock’s small silver lever, but before that a strong blow sounded on the door.

Victoria flinched. I automatically stepped in front of her. The body remembered the old movement by itself — shoulders low, eyes on the exit, hands free.

The door opened and Grant Harlan entered. Behind him stood the head of security, whom no one had seemed able to find all evening.

“Grant,” Victoria said sternly, “why are all the cameras in your security room turned off?”

“I know nothing about this nonsense,” he answered.

There was fear in his voice, but anger was written on his face.

The leader quickly closed the folder.

“You’re late.”

Grant looked at him as if he knew him.

That one second was enough.

“You know each other,” I said.

“Shut up, cleaner!” Grant shouted.

“Now you know my surname too.”

His face changed.

The head of security tried to swing from behind, but I noticed him in the mirror’s reflection. I lowered my head and avoided his fist. His hand struck the wall. Grant stepped back in fear, while Victoria took a heavy bronze statue from the table.

“One more step and I’ll smash it into your head,” she told him.

“You have no idea what you are doing,” Grant whispered.

“I know exactly,” Victoria replied. “Someone is trying to control my company through blackmail.”

I pulled a small radio from the belt of the attacker lying on the floor. The channel was on. After several seconds, an unfamiliar voice came from it.

“Make Harlan sign. If she refuses, start with the girl.”

The color drained from Victoria’s face.

Cold ran down my neck. They knew Lily’s school.

“Where is my daughter?” I asked.

The radio fell silent.

Grant looked away.

“No one is at your apartment,” he said.

“That is not an answer.”

“Daniel,” Victoria called to me quietly, “we have to find Lily first.”

I took out my phone and called the school. The principal told me Lily was already home. A neighbor was sitting with her. Only then did I breathe out.

But the relief lasted several seconds. A message arrived on Victoria’s phone. A photo of my house appeared on the screen. It had been taken from our entrance, beside Lily’s pink bicycle.

Below it was written: “The next picture will be closer.”

Victoria put the phone on the table.

“All this is happening because of me,” she said.

“No,” I answered. “It is happening because someone thinks they can force both of us to obey.”

!!!  Preparé una celebración íntima para mi aniversario, pero mi hermana tomó el micrófono y mi esposo dejó de sonreír

The old attacker sat against the wall, blood running down his face. His eyes were fixed on me.

“You should not have gotten involved in this, Carter,” he told me.

“Five years ago you told me I would never have to make a choice again.”

His jaw tightened.

“Even then you did not know the whole truth.”

Victoria immediately bent toward him.

“What truth?”

The old man looked at Grant.

Grant lowered his eyes.

The folder still lay on the table. Sterling company’s seal was visible on it, and beneath it, words written in my handwriting — “For Victoria only.”

I recognized those words.

Six years ago, one day before Emily’s funeral, I had written this phrase on a secret report. A report that should have disappeared long ago.

“Where did you find this?” I asked Grant.

He fell silent.

Victoria looked toward him.

“Answer.”

“From your father’s archives,” he said with difficulty.

Her father had died four years earlier.

I reached for the folder, but the old man put his foot forward.

“Open it and your life will return to the swamp from which you escaped.”

“You have already returned my life there.”

I picked up the folder. Inside, together with the papers, lay a small memory card. On its surface, in black ink, only one date was written — the day before Emily’s death.

Victoria saw the date and caught her breath.

“Daniel… does this have something to do with your wife?”

I did not have an answer yet. But outside, in the rain, another car stopped. Its headlights shone directly toward the lobby.

The radio screeched again.

“Lock the doors. The second group is coming in.”

I pressed the folder to my chest and took Victoria’s hand.

“Now you have to decide whether you trust me or not.”

“I already trust you.”

The handle on the distant lobby door slowly went down…

The handle went all the way down, but the door did not open. Someone struck it with a shoulder from outside. The glass shook.

“To the security room,” I told Victoria. “There is an emergency exit from there.”

“And you?”

“First I have to know this.”

I opened the folder quickly. On the very first page lay Grant Harlan’s signature and a table of money transfers. The sums went to different companies, but the final recipient everywhere was the same — the Northern Bridge Foundation.

Victoria looked at the paper.

“My father founded this foundation.”

“And Grant was stealing his money,” I said.

“Not only money,” the old attacker interjected. “Your father wanted to leave everything to Victoria. But Harlan hid his last letter.”

Grant shouted:

“Don’t believe this murderer!”

“I am not a murderer,” the old man answered coldly. “I was a hired guard. Daniel once saved my life.”

The door shook again from outside.

I inserted the memory card into the laptop. A video turned on. In the recording, Victoria’s father, Alexander Sterling, sat in his study. The camera shook, as if someone had installed it secretly.

“If you are watching this, Victoria, Grant already knows that I have figured everything out,” he was saying. “Millions have disappeared from the company accounts. But the most dangerous thing is that an external security group also took part in hiding it.”

!!!  I asked the woman on the beach to dress modestly, but her laughter suddenly made everyone there stop.

Victoria’s lips turned pale.

In the video, her father put a paper on the table.

“I asked Daniel Carter to check my security network. If something happens to him, it means the danger was closer to my family than I thought.”

I stared at the screen.

The day before Emily’s death, I was working on this very investigation. Officially I was told that her illness had been sudden. But that week I discovered that my phone was being monitored. Then Emily died and every trace disappeared.

The video continued.

“Harlan forged my signature. If I refuse, he threatens the person protecting the Carter family. Daniel, if you ever see this, know: your wife’s death was not an accident.”

Victoria covered her mouth with her hand.

The strength left my legs.

“No…” I barely pronounced.

Grant shook his head.

“It is fake.”

“Then why did you know my wife?” I asked.

He fell silent.

The old man lowered his eyes.

“Emily did not happen to be there,” he said. “She was collecting documents for Alexander. Grant knew. Another car hit their car on the road.”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Did you kill my father?”

“I killed no one!” Grant shouted. “I was only trying to save everything.”

“Yourself,” I said.

This time the lobby door opened. But the people who entered were police officers. The emergency message Victoria had sent earlier had gone through the system.

Grant tried to escape. I blocked his way.

“Don’t make me, Daniel.”

“This time you no longer have a choice.”

The police handcuffed him. Victoria stood beside me and watched her frozen father on the screen.

As they led Grant outside, an unknown number called my phone.

“Daniel Carter?” a woman’s voice asked. “You have seen only the first file. Another person was involved in Emily’s case.”

“Who?”

The woman left silence for several seconds.

“The person you trust every morning.”

The call ended.

Victoria looked at me.

At that moment, the head of security, who had stood silently the entire time, looked toward the door. I noticed a small black key in his hand.

And I realized that Grant might not have been the most dangerous person in this story at all…
