When the Billionaire Tested His Employees’ Loyalty, His Little Daughter Quietly Handed Something to Her Mother Returning Home, and She Could Not Hide Her Pallor

That night, when I closed my eyes in my own living room and pretended to be asleep, such silence fell beyond the door that it seemed the whole house had stopped even breathing.

I lay on the sofa with my hands crossed over my feet and listened to the monotonous ticking of the clock. I had a huge house, luxurious furniture, marble floors, and rooms in which a person could lose himself for an entire day. But at that moment only one question troubled me: if I acted as though I needed help, would anyone notice me at all?

I already knew the answer. Or so I thought.

The sound of small athletic shoes came from the corridor. The steps slowly approached me and stopped beside the sofa.

“Daniel?” Lily whispered quietly.

I did not open my eyes.

Lily was three years old, wore a purple dress, and fastened her hair on the left side with a red star-shaped clip. When I first met her, she was sitting on the kitchen floor and drawing a red birthday hat on a green dinosaur. Then she asked me whether I really lived in the whole house.

Now she waited for several seconds.

“Daniel, are you sleeping?”

I evened out my breathing.

Lily lowered her head. She touched the edge of the sofa with her small palm, then stepped back and disappeared into the corridor. A bitter laugh slipped through my heart. She left too. After all, everyone knew that there was no point in being near me.

Soon I heard the sound of something scraping across the floor.

Lily was coming back, but this time backward. With both hands she dragged a large yellow blanket that was almost as tall as she was. The corner of the blanket became tangled under her shoe, and each time the child stopped, pulled it, and continued on her way.

When she reached me, she barely lifted the blanket and spread it over my knees.

“Mother said that if someone falls asleep on the sofa, we should cover him, otherwise he will catch cold.”

Her little fingers straightened the edge of the blanket. At that moment I did not want to open my eyes. I wanted this test to continue. I wanted to remain asleep for Lily and convince myself that this gesture meant nothing.

But the end of the blanket slipped past my wrist. I stretched out my hand and caught the corner.

Lily jumped.

“You weren’t sleeping.”

“No,” I told her.

She studied my face, as though trying to understand whether I was angry.

“Is that bad?”

“What?”

“That I woke you.”

“No, Lily. It isn’t bad.”

That night, for the first time, I felt how heavy a kindness was that wanted nothing in return.

I lost my mother at the age of six. After the funeral, my father told me to stop crying, because tears did not pay taxes. By the age of twelve, I had already learned that one should expect little from people, so that disappointment would not kill you.

At twenty-two I built my first company from a small dormitory room. At thirty-four my surname was written on several buildings in the city, and the property they owned was worth almost forty billion. Still, I ate dinner alone.

Three months earlier, my closest partner, Nathan Mercer, had sold the company’s secrets to competitors. The loss was approaching six hundred million.

It was not the money that hurt.

What hurt was that Nathan finally told me:

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi prometido me entregó para saldar una deuda y, al ver la medicina sobre la mesa, el temido hombre dejó de sonreír

“You never trusted anyone, Daniel. You only trusted people’s usefulness.”

“This time, too, you turned out to be right,” I answered.

That morning I summoned Maria Torres to my office. The blanket lay on a chair. I wanted to know whether she had said anything to Lily.

“Did you tell her to cover me?” I asked.

Maria tensed.

“Do you think I used my daughter so that I could make myself look good to you?”

I did not answer.

My silence was enough.

Maria watched me for several seconds, then took a thick brown folder from her bag. Green pencil marks from Lily were visible on its cardboard corners.

“Then this will make everything easier for you,” she said.

Then she removed the work keys from her belt and placed them directly in my palm.

“Maria…”

“My daughter’s kindness should not have been doubted.”

She took Lily’s hand and walked toward the door. I looked at the folder, from whose upper edge one folded sheet was showing. I reached toward it, and at that exact moment the door handle jingled…

The door handle went down, and I gripped the folder.

“Wait, Maria.”

She stopped, but did not turn around. Lily stood by her feet and wound a small thread from the yellow blanket around her finger.

“What should wait?” Maria asked.

“I want to know what is in here.”

“If you truly think all this has value, open it.”

I opened the folder. The first sheet was a resignation statement. The second page said that Maria was leaving the house that same day and was refusing any additional payment.

The third page seemed blank, but in the lower corner there was a child’s drawing. A large black house, a small yellow blanket in front of it, and two figures. One had a red star on its head.

“Did Lily draw this?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Why is the second person so large?”

For the first time Maria looked at me.

“Because children still believe that money does not determine size among people.”

Lily’s face clouded.

“Mother, is Daniel unwell?”

Maria bent down in front of her.

“No, darling. Sometimes grown-ups need help, but they cannot say it.”

Her words went straight through my heart. The copper clock standing near the decorative fireplace struck loudly, and for the first time I saw how strangely empty my house was.

“Stay,” I told Maria.

“Why?”

“Because I did not want it to turn out this way.”

“But it did.”

They left. And I remained alone with the folder and the child’s drawing.

In the evening I called Owen, the head of security.

“Bring me the recordings from the basement cameras. The last three months.”

“What should we look for?”

“I don’t know. That is why I want everything.”

At eleven at night we sat in the monitoring room. The screens showed different corners of the house: the kitchen, the rear entrance, the garage, the wine cellar. The air smelled of dust and heated electronics.

“Stop here,” I said.

Nathan appeared on the screen. He was standing in the garage and talking on the phone. The date was from two months earlier. Behind him was Maria’s old bag, but Maria herself was nowhere to be seen.

“There is no sound recording,” Owen said.

“Continue anyway.”

Nathan took a small black device from the trunk of the car. A few minutes later another man entered. He was a lawyer for the competing company, who publicly claimed that he was seeing Nathan for the first time that day.

!!!  Part 4 — On the third day after my C-section, three children were left at my door, but after the call my husband’s face turned pale

Cold passed through my neck.

“Who saw this recording?” I asked.

“I did not, Mr. Hale. The old archive is saved automatically, but only the administrator has access.”

“Who is the administrator?”

Owen swallowed.

“Nathan.”

At that moment the telephone rang. It was an unknown number.

“Daniel Hale speaking.”

There was silence on the other side for several seconds. Then I heard a quiet man’s voice.

“If you opened Maria’s folder, you already know that everything is worse than you thought.”

“Who are you?”

“The person who filmed everything that night.”

“Where is the recording?”

“First tell me whether you truly want to hear the truth.”

“Yes.”

“Then come to the third platform of the old station at six in the morning. Alone.”

The call ended.

Owen looked at me.

“It is a trap.”

“Maybe.”

“And if you do not go?”

I looked at Lily’s drawing placed in the folder. The little figure held a yellow blanket in its hands.

“Then all my life I will again trust the people who told me that nobody needs me.”

I arrived at the station in the morning. Fog covered the rails, and the old platform lights flickered. Five minutes before six, a woman in a black hat stopped in front of me.

“Are you Daniel Hale?”

“Yes.”

She took a small voice recorder from her bag.

“Maria left this with me, in case she could not leave the house alive.”

My heart began beating as though it wanted to escape from my chest.

“Why should Maria be afraid?”

The woman pressed her thumb on the recorder’s play button, and at that exact moment the deafening sound of train brakes rang out at the end of the platform. The first words burst from the recording…

Nathan’s voice came from the recorder.

“Maria, I am telling you once again, do not touch those files.”

The train stopped at the platform, but I did not even notice its doors opening. Every other sound disappeared.

The woman put the recorder in my hand.

“I am Elena. Maria’s sister. She told me that if Daniel was finally ready for the truth, I had to give this to you.”

Maria’s tense breathing could be heard in the recorder’s sound.

“If you are hearing this, you probably already know that I did not leave the house only because of Lily. Two months ago, at night, I went down to the kitchen for water and heard voices from the garage. Nathan was talking to someone. He said that the plan to acquire your company had to be sent to the competitors by Friday.”

The recorder fell silent for several seconds.

“I filmed the screen with my phone. Then I realized that the camera recordings had also been deleted, but one copy was automatically saved on the technical server. Nathan did not know this. The files are in the folder.”

I gripped the recorder so tightly that the plastic creaked.

Maria’s voice sounded again.

“I did not want to receive money. I wanted Daniel to know that not every person betrayed him. But when he thought that even Lily’s kindness had been planned in advance, I realized that by staying in his house I was teaching my child that kindness is worthwhile only if it is not followed by suspicion.”

The recorder stopped.

Elena lowered her eyes.

“There are copies of the files in the folder. Also a letter Maria wrote for you.”

!!!  Part 4 — My husband left me for another woman before childbirth, but my sister’s call suddenly erased his smile

I took out the sheet. Maria’s handwriting was clean and clear.

“Daniel, you are not a bad person. You have simply been protecting yourself alone for too long. But if you see everyone as a suspect, in the end only those who need your wealth will remain with you. For Lily’s sake, I want you to know: that night she brought you the blanket because you spoke to her with a calm face. Children remember these things.”

Something collapsed inside my heart.

That same morning I called the lawyer, Sophie, and completely shut down the company’s security department. We sent the files to the laboratory. Two hours later it was confirmed: the recording was genuine, the files were unchanged, and Nathan’s signature on the financial transfers was clearly visible.

Sophie tapped her fingers on the table.

“This is enough for a criminal case, but we have one problem.”

“What problem?”

“Nathan called a company board meeting this morning. He claims that you are psychologically unstable and is trying to temporarily remove you from management.”

A laugh burst from me, but there was nothing funny about it.

“He does not yet know that we know?”

“No.”

The telephone rang again. This time it was Maria.

“Daniel, where are you?” Fear could be heard in her voice.

“I found the truth.”

Silence fell.

“Then do not come alone to take Lily. Nathan knows where we live.”

I jumped to my feet.

“I am coming right now.”

“No. Listen to me first. He told me this morning that if the files were revealed, he would not only destroy your company. He would say that I stole the data and have Lily taken away from me.”

I looked at Sophie. Her face suddenly turned pale.

“Daniel,” she said, “this is no longer only financial betrayal.”

At that same moment a security notification appeared on my computer: an unknown user had entered the house’s central system.

The camera image came on the screen.

Someone was standing in my empty living room. He was holding a yellow blanket.

And then I realized that Nathan was still in my house…
