Part 4 — On the third day after my C-section, three children were left at my door, but after the call my husband’s face turned pale

The man on the line fell silent, then added:

“And this person has not yet left this room.”

Everyone in the room held their breath.

Teresa immediately looked toward the door. Veronica hugged her bag to her chest. Mateo did not move from his place.

“Tell me the name,” I said to the bank employee.

“First I must personally confirm your identity. I advise you not to let anyone leave the room.”

The call ended.

The lawyer locked the door.

“Put everyone’s phones on the table.”

“This is absurd,” Teresa shouted. “I will not tolerate this woman’s accusations.”

“You have already tolerated a great deal, Mrs. Teresa,” the lawyer replied calmly. “Now you have only a few minutes left to hear the truth.”

Mateo placed his phone on the table.

Veronica did not put hers down.

“My phone is private.”

Andres extended his hand in front of her.

“Veronica, put it down.”

“Are you on her side too?”

“I am on the side of the child who would have been left with a scar on his face if help had been delayed one more minute.”

Veronica dropped the phone on the table.

A few minutes later, a representative from the bank’s security department and an investigator entered. They did not shout. They made no dramatic gesture. They simply spread out the documents and asked questions one after another.

“Mr. Mateo, access to your account was used from an old device that was registered to your mother.”

Mateo closed his eyes.

“Mom, did you know my password?”

Teresa answered immediately:

“Son, I entered only once, to check a transfer.”

“Which transfer?”

She had no answer anymore.

The investigator looked at Veronica.

“A confirmation code was sent from your phone last night.”

Veronica gripped the chair.

“Someone else could have used the phone.”

“But the code came to your hands.”

“My mother asked me; it was only help.”

Teresa turned toward her.

“Don’t blame everything on me.”

This was the first time they did not protect each other. Both tried to save themselves at the same time. And for the first time I realized that their strength actually existed only in their shared lie.

The lawyer placed the final document in front of me.

“Your money is temporarily frozen. The procedure for returning it will begin. A request for enforcement against the company’s assets will also be filed.”

Teresa looked at Mateo.

“You will allow this? Your family is falling apart.”

Mateo could barely get his voice out.

“The family fell apart when you stole Lucia’s money and convinced me that it was ordinary help.”

!!!  Három fegyveres tört be az étkezdébe, én pedig mozdulatlanul maradtam, amíg a vezető hirtelen elsápadt

“You are our son.”

“That is exactly why it hurts the most.”

Later, while the investigators were recording the statements, Mateo asked me to go out into the corridor alone for a minute. He stood beside the white hospital wall. He was holding the brown diary.

“Can I listen to that recording one more time?” he asked.

“Why?”

“I want to understand exactly what I was doing during these three years.”

The lawyer turned on the recording.

Teresa’s voice could be heard: “Lucia will keep quiet. She will not dare resist Mateo.”

Mateo lowered his head.

Then Veronica’s voice: “If necessary, we will say that she asked for the money herself.”

Mateo’s hands tightened.

“I knew all of this,” he said.

“No. You heard it, but you did not want to believe it.”

“I will never do this again.”

“You already chose peace over truth once.”

He turned off the recording.

“May I wait for you?”

“Where?”

“At home.”

“Which home? The one whose down payment your mother took?”

Mateo lowered his eyes.

“Lucia, I don’t know how to fix this.”

“Now, for the first time, do not try to make decisions in my place.”

That same evening the doctor told me I could return home, but not alone. Andres’s parents temporarily took the children. Emiliano’s fever went down. Only a thin pink line remained on my daughter’s cheek.

When I entered the house, the first thing I saw was the empty children’s room. The crib stood in the corner. Bruno’s little sneakers had been left under the bed. And Nico’s plastic dinosaur hung on the door.

I went over and took down the dinosaur.

The silence was so heavy that it was not my abdominal wound but my chest that began to hurt.

My brown diary lay on the kitchen table. A white trace of Emiliano’s fingers remained on the cover. That night, for the first time, I did not write anything. I only ran my hand over the cover and realized that I no longer needed to prove to myself every day that I remembered the truth.

The next morning Mateo called me twenty-seven times.

I did not answer the phone at all for the first ten calls.

On the eleventh he sent me a short message: “The lawyer told me that Mother and Veronica are under investigation. I want to talk to you.”

On the twelfth: “I will return the money to you, even if I have to sell everything.”

On the thirteenth: “I don’t want to lose you.”

That message hurt me the most. Not because I wanted him back. Because for three years he understood this only when he saw the danger of losing me.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Hui de mi boda descalza y el hombre que frenó su coche murmuró una orden que lo cambió todo

He came in the evening. He stood at the door, holding a photograph from our wedding. In the photograph we were both laughing. My hair had been tousled by the wind, and his hand rested on my shoulder.

“May I come in?” he asked.

“No.”

“Only for five minutes.”

“Mateo, your five minutes lasted three years.”

He placed the photograph on the floor by the door.

“I want us to start over.”

“I have already started.”

“Lucia…”

“No. This time I will say it to the end.”

He fell silent.

“Your mother and sister will answer for what they did. And you must answer for leaving me alone every time I saw the truth. I am no longer going to justify their lies in your place.”

“If there is even one chance…”

“You already had your chance. When I first told you that my money was gone. When your mother shouted in my house. When they left the children with me. I gave you every chance then.”

Mateo nodded.

“Then is this the end?”

“No,” I told him calmly. “This is the moment when my life begins for the first time without someone else’s permission.”

He left.

I slowly closed the door.

Several weeks later I began working at a small law firm in the city. At first I could only organize documents because sitting for a long time was difficult for me. Then the manager told me that the accuracy of my notes helped everyone.

Every morning I drank coffee from a small blue cup. A drawing made by the children lay on my desk. Bruno had drawn all four of us, but this time I was holding a large red shield in my hands.

“What is this for?” I asked.

“So that no one scares you anymore,” he answered.

Emiliano’s fever never returned. Nico gave me a new plastic animal every week. My daughter, Elena, was already laughing, and when she laughed, the thin line remaining on her cheek was barely visible.

Three months later I received a notice from the court. A case had officially been opened against Teresa and Veronica. The company’s remaining assets were frozen. Part of the money was returned to me, and a plan was approved for the rest.

I did not celebrate the news of their arrest.

Nor did I feel joy.

I simply opened the window that evening and let fresh air in.

Andres separated from Veronica. He was temporarily granted custody of the children. Once he called me and said:

!!!  My Humiliation at the Festive Table Changed the Plans of the Whole Family, but After My Response My Mother-in-Law’s Smile Disappeared

“Thank you for writing down the truth.”

“I did not write the truth for you,” I answered. “I wrote it for myself.”

“Even so, you saved my children.”

I had no answer to that.

The first snow came at the beginning of December. Elena was already seven months old. I stood by the window and watched white flakes fall onto the balcony railing. Bruno and Nico were building colored blocks on the floor. Emiliano was crashing a wooden car against the wall.

“Mom, look, we built a castle!” Nico shouted.

“It is not a castle,” I corrected him with a smile. “It is a house.”

That evening I received Mateo’s final message.

“I told my lawyer that we should meet your demands. Mother says that if you return, everything will be put right again. Please think about it at least once.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I have already thought about it. I am not returning to a place where, in exchange for peace, I will have to give up my own truth.”

I sent the message and put the phone aside.

I sat Elena on my lap. Her small fingers reached for my brown diary, which lay on the table. The cover was already worn, and Emiliano’s old white trace was still visible in the corner.

I opened the diary. On the last page I made a new entry:

“First snow. The children are safe. I am no longer afraid that I will forget the truth.”

Then I closed the pen.

It was snowing outside.

For the first time, no one was shouting in the house.

And my diary, which I had once created to protect myself, simply remained closed that night.

Missed the beginning?
