My Humiliation at the Festive Table Changed the Plans of the Whole Family, but After My Response My Mother-in-Law’s Smile Disappeared

My mother-in-law stuck out her foot toward the chair while six business partners were looking at us, and my face crashed directly into the edge of the salad plate.

The conversation in the room stopped in one second.

And then Andria began to laugh.

I slowly raised my head. Beige sauce was running from my hair onto the collar of my dress, while Galina’s stone-decorated shoe stood beside the overturned chair on the floor. She pulled her foot back and frowned as if she herself were surprised by what had happened.

“Oh, dear, sit properly next time,” she told me in a sweet voice.

“Elene, you should have seen your face,” Andria added with laughter.

The waiter handed me a folded white napkin. My hands were shaking so much that I could barely take it. Humiliation was choking me, but what troubled me even more was that I saw victory in Galina’s eyes.

She had not done it accidentally.

My mother-in-law had chosen the separate hall of the expensive restaurant precisely for this. She needed an audience. She wanted everyone to see how she would punish the woman whose house and money she already considered theirs.

“Well?” Andria asked me. “Won’t you say anything?”

I looked at him. Five years earlier, when I fell while walking, he had cleaned my wounds himself and told me, “I will never leave you in trouble.”

Now he was sitting beside his mother and laughing at my pain.

“Forgive me,” I said quietly.

Galina leaned back against the chair with satisfaction.

“See? It wasn’t that difficult.”

In recent months she had been slowly teaching me to be silent. She criticized my clothes, my work, my food, and even the small house my father had left me. At first Andria defended me. Then he began repeating her words.

He restricted my access to the joint accounts, opened my letters, and told acquaintances that I became emotionally unstable when I asked questions about money.

And three nights ago, I found the answer.

Andria’s tablet had remained open. A message from Galina appeared on the screen: “Put through the last payment before Elene finds out about the burden. As soon as the house becomes ours, let’s close the company and leave the debts to her.”

I read the entire correspondence.

They had forged my signature on the credit documents. They had used the house left by my father as collateral for Andria’s business, which was already on the verge of bankruptcy. Even worse was that money from the business was regularly transferred to a firm that Galina actually owned.

!!!  Mein Vater verbot mir die Uniform bei Melanies Hochzeit, doch als ich durch die Türen trat, verlor er plötzlich jedes Wort

And they told the investors that the money was going into medical technology projects.

They considered me a silent designer who understood nothing about finances.

My father had checked complicated financial reports for thirty years. In childhood he told me: “The most dangerous lie is one inconsistent number hidden in a table.”

I had barely slept for three days. I compared every transfer, checked every account again, and contacted my father’s former partner.

At six in the evening I received a short message from an employee of the financial investigation: “The evidence is sufficient. Act.”

Galina raised her glass.

“To family loyalty.”

I took the glass of water.

“To the consequences.”

The smile disappeared from her face for a moment, but she immediately regained her confident expression.

I took my phone and pressed the send button.

Six phones rang almost simultaneously.

The partners opened the received files. One of them enlarged the document, looked at Andria, and turned the tablet toward him.

“Andria, why is Elene’s signature on this document?” he asked.

Andria was about to answer, but at that same moment the restaurant door opened and a woman with a black folder entered the hall. She walked straight toward our table, put down the folder, and reached to open it…

The folder had not yet been opened, but the color had already drained from Andria’s face.

“Who is this woman?” Galina asked.

“A representative of the financial investigation,” I answered.

Andria leaned toward me.

“Elene, let’s go outside and talk.”

“For five years you have been telling me exactly that whenever I tried to learn the truth.”

The woman with the folder placed the first sheet on the table. My signature had been inserted into the document as a copy. One of the partners opened the same file on his phone and quietly said:

“This is not an ordinary mistake.”

Galina put down her glass so forcefully that champagne spilled across the table.

“You are interfering in a family matter,” she said.

“You call this a family matter?” the investor asked. “Where did our money go?”

Andria looked at his mother.

“You told me everything was temporary.”

At that moment I realized that their plan was already collapsing from within.

But one more sheet remained in the folder. The investigator carefully took it out and placed it in front of me.

“Andria himself signed this document,” she said. “However, it says that the owner of the property renounces the house.”

Andria pushed his chair back.

“This is impossible.”

“That is exactly why we brought a copy of the original,” the woman replied.

Galina’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and suddenly fell silent. One transfer had been stopped, but the second message proved even more serious…

Galina hid the phone under the table, but I had already read the message on her face.

“What happened?” Andria asked.

“The accounts have been blocked,” she said quietly.

Then the investigator opened the folder and spread several documents across the table. Only the rustling of paper could be heard in the room.

“This is the credit agreement according to which Elene’s house was pledged as collateral,” the woman said. “Here is her signature.”

“She signed it herself,” Andria immediately answered.

I turned the tablet toward him.

“No. This signature has been inserted as a separate image. When the scale is changed, the edges can be seen.”

The partner enlarged the document and went to the window.

“It is true. The same trace appears in every copy.”

“This proves nothing,” Galina shouted.

“Then explain this to us,” I said and opened the second file.

On one side of the table were Andria’s company expenses, and on the other were the amounts received into the account of Galina’s firm. The dates matched. The amounts did too.

“You said this money was going to medical research,” the investor told Galina. “Why did it end up in your company?”

Galina looked at Andria.

“He managed the finances.”

“You told me the accounts were being used only temporarily!” Andria shouted.

His words fell onto the table like a broken glass.

Everyone understood that they had acted together.

“Three days ago I found their correspondence on Andria’s tablet,” I said. “It directly says that they were going to take my house and leave the debts to me.”

Andria shook his head.

“You were rummaging through my personal things?”

“You were rummaging through my life and planning to sell it.”

The investigator picked up the last envelope.

“Here is an audio recording that was legally made during a company meeting. The voice has been identified.”

!!!  Part 4 — They Did Not Pay My Mother Her Salary, and I Went to Her Boss at Noon — and When He Saw the Sheet, He Lost Color

Galina lost her composure for the first time.

“Do not open it.”

“Why?” I asked.

The woman played the recording.

First Andria’s voice was heard: “Elene will not be able to resist us. If she cries, we will take her to a doctor and say that she is imagining everything.”

Then Galina’s voice: “The main thing is to get the signature. Then the house will be in our hands.”

The recording ended.

Andria sat frozen. One partner lowered his eyes. The other put his phone on the table and said:

“From this moment, all contracts with you are terminated.”

Galina lunged toward me.

“Elene, we are family. This can still be discussed.”

“You were not family, but buyers of my house.”

The investigator gathered the documents.

“Tomorrow morning both of you will appear for official questioning. Until then, access to the company accounts is suspended.”

Andria looked me in the eyes.

“You cannot do this to me.”

“I did nothing to you. I simply stopped protecting you.”

At that moment a call came to my phone from an unknown number. I opened the message and read only one sentence: “If you want to find out who else had money stolen, come tomorrow morning to the old archival building…”
