In the divorce court, my husband considered everything lost, but the judge read one sheet of paper and his smile disappeared

That day my husband brought three lawyers, his mistress, and such a marriage contract into the courtroom as if he had buried my life in advance.

I was still standing in the corridor when I heard Andria’s laughter from the courtroom. It was ten o’clock in the morning. Raindrops ran down the windows, and wet shoeprints remained on the floor. In my hand I held a leather bag, in whose inner pocket lay a small copper key made twelve years earlier. Everything began with that key.

Andria sat in an expensive dark suit. The watch on his wrist shone as if time worked only on his side. Beside him sat Polina Yurchenko — the woman he said he would marry as soon as our divorce was over.

“Where is Mrs. Levanidze?” asked Judge Ketevan Koval.

Andria looked at his watch.

“She probably still hasn’t understood that court is not a hotel. They do not wait here for those who are late.”

Polina giggled quietly.

I entered the courtroom and took both boys by the hand. Maksim and Ostat were eight years old, with identical dark hair and completely different looks. Maksim held a crumpled paper airplane, while Ostat gripped my fingers so tightly that his nails dug into my skin.

“Why did you bring the children here?” Andria became irritated.

“Because you have already told them that I left the house and cannot support them,” I answered.

“That is a lie.”

“Then say it in front of them.”

Andria looked at the boys, but both immediately looked away.

The judge looked sternly at Polina.

“One more comment and you will have to leave the courtroom.”

Polina’s smile disappeared.

Then Andria’s senior lawyer spoke for almost twenty minutes. He listed our house, the boys’ private school, bank accounts, and investments. Every sentence proved the same thing: I was an unemployed woman who lived on her husband’s money.

“Mrs. Levanidze has never had a stable income,” said the lawyer. “She cannot raise the children independently.”

Maksim put the paper airplane on the table. On its wing, in pencil, was written: “Mom, don’t be afraid.”

I swallowed the heaviness that had formed in my throat.

Andria’s lawyer ultimately demanded full custody of the boys.

“Mrs. Levanidze, who represents your interests?” the judge asked me.

“I represent myself.”

Andria leaned back in his chair. His smile grew wider.

“Do you understand how serious this case is?” the judge asked.

“Very well.”

I put the bag on the table. The leather clasp was slightly stuck, and a familiar creaking sound came when I opened it. I had heard that same sound twelve years earlier, when I opened the door of a small office and laid the documents of my first company on the table.

I took out a sealed envelope.

Polina looked at Andria.

“What is that?”

“I don’t know,” he said quietly, although tension appeared on his face for the first time.

I handed the envelope to the judge.

She slowly broke the seal. Inside were several sheets of paper. The judge took out the first page, looked at the date, and suddenly knitted her brows.

Andria leaned forward.

“Your Honor, these documents have nothing to do with the case.”

The judge did not answer. She read the first line once more, then turned over the second page and fixed her gaze on me.

“Mrs. Levanidze, is this your signature?”

Andria’s hand gripped the edge of the table. I understood that now there was no way back. The judge placed her finger on the first line of the document and began reading aloud…

Judge Koval brought the document closer.

“It says here that you founded the company ‘Horizon Transport Systems,’ Mrs. Levanidze.”

Silence fell over the courtroom.

Andria immediately rose.

“That is an old document. She transferred the rights to me long ago.”

“Then there must be a transfer agreement,” said the judge.

His second lawyer quickly opened a folder.

“There is one, Your Honor.”

I took a second sheet from the envelope.

“This must be the document you mean.”

The judge looked at the date. It was the birthday of our twins. That day I was lying in the hospital, holding both newborns to my chest and barely breathing.

“Is this your signature?” she asked.

“No.”

Andria lost color.

“Elene, think before you say anything.”

“I have thought for twelve years.”

The judge placed the papers between the genuine founding document and the suspicious agreement. The signatures were clearly different.

“The court will verify the authenticity of the documents,” she declared. “Until then, the children will remain with their mother.”

Polina moved her chair away from Andria.

Andria took out his mobile phone and called someone quietly.

“Bring the recording immediately,” he told someone. “The one that will change everything…”

Andria had not finished the call when the courtroom door opened and a middle-aged woman entered. She held a small wooden box in her hands. I recognized the woman immediately — it was Marina, the company’s former accountant, who for the last six years I had considered lost.

Andria’s face froze in one second.

“What are you doing here?” he shouted.

Marina looked at the judge.

“I came because I can no longer remain silent.”

She placed the box on the table. On the lid was a stain of old blue paint that I remembered from the small office where I had drawn up the company’s first plans.

“This is the original register,” Marina said. “And this is an audio recording.”

One of Andria’s lawyers immediately stood up.

“I object to the admissibility of the recording.”

“Let us listen first,” the judge replied.

Marina turned on the small device. Andria’s voice rang out in the courtroom, twelve years younger, but exactly as confident as it had been that morning.

“If Elene cannot stand after giving birth, we will obtain the signature anyway. She must give up the company. The children, the house, and the money will remain with me.”

Then another voice sounded.

“But this is forgery.”

It was Marina’s voice.

In the recording, Andria answered furiously:

“If you want to keep your job, you will sign the document and say that Elene requested it herself.”

Maksim looked at me with eyes widened like my mother’s. Ostat took my hand and pressed it to his cheek.

“Did Dad really deceive you?” he asked.

I bent down in front of him.

“Yes, my son. But it was never your fault.”

The judge unfolded the original register. My name was written on the first page. My signature was on the second page. And on the third page was the decision appointing Andria as director.

“You founded the company,” the judge said. “You owned it before the marriage and never transferred the rights.”

Andria raised his voice.

“This woman is inventing everything! I built this empire!”

“You managed it,” I answered calmly. “But I began building it.”

For the first time, Polina looked at the documents and not at Andria.

“You told me everything was yours,” she whispered.

Andria reached a hand toward her.

“Not now.”

The judge handed the documents to the security service and stated that the case required a separate investigation for possible forgery and fraud. Then she announced a temporary decision: the children would remain with me, while Andria would be allowed to see them only under supervision.

Andria looked at his phone. A message from an unknown number was waiting on the screen. He read it, and fear appeared on his face.

“What happened?” I asked.

He did not answer me.

Marina leaned toward me and said very quietly:

“This is only the first recording. The rest is in the room where Andria went this morning…”
