Part 4 — In the divorce court, my husband considered everything lost, but the judge read one sheet of paper and his smile disappeared

After Marina’s last words, Andria gripped the phone so tightly that his fingers turned white.

The judge adjourned the hearing, but allowed no one to leave the courtroom.

“Your client will leave this building accompanied by the police,” she told Andria’s lawyers.

The senior lawyer lowered his eyes.

“Mr. Levanidze, at this stage I will not be able to remain your representative.”

“What do you mean, you will not be able to?”

“It means I cannot take responsibility for defending documents that were hidden from me.”

The second lawyer closed the folder.

“I am ending my representation as well.”

Andria was left alone in one second. The third lawyer, who had sat silently all morning, slowly stood up.

“I will call the police myself,” he said. “Before you present this in another way.”

Andria reached a hand toward him.

“Don’t you dare.”

“I already dared.”

In the corridor, the phones rang at the same time. The journalists learned that the company’s founding documents and old recordings had been presented in court. Andria was cornered against the wall.

“Mr. Levanidze, is it true that the company belongs to your wife?”

“Then why did you present a suspicious agreement in court?”

Andria angrily walked between them.

I took the boys by the hand and went toward another exit.

That same evening I went with Marina to the company’s old office. The building stood on the outskirts of the city, beside the railway line. The staircase smelled of dust and oil. On the second floor, we found the door half open.

“Andria came in here this morning,” Marina said.

Everything in the room was disordered. Drawers had been pulled out, papers were scattered across the floor, and the computer screen was dark.

Only one thing remained on the wall — a photograph of our first office.

In the photograph I was standing with the same small copper key with which I had opened the door that morning. Beside me, a young Andria was smiling and promising me the future.

!!!  Když jsem na bílé hotelové prostěradlo uviděl krev, myslel jsem, že moje bývalá žena skrývá nemoc — netušil jsem, že přede mnou ukrývá dvě děti a tajemství, které nám někdo vzal před devíti lety

I took down the photograph.

On its back, in pencil, was written: “We will build it together.”

Marina picked up a small memory device from the floor.

“The rest is here.”

The recordings showed how Andria signed false documents, checked transfers of money from the accounts, and ordered the employees not to call anyone for me.

In one recording, his voice sounded especially clear.

“Elene thinks that I am only her husband. Let her think so. When the divorce is over, she will have neither a name nor the children.”

I heard these words about myself and realized for the first time that for years I had been trying to save a man who had planned my disappearance.

Marina stood silently.

“Forgive me for not being able to protect you then.”

“You came today. Sometimes arriving late for the truth is still better than not coming at all.”

In the following weeks, everything changed quickly.

The investigation confirmed that my signature on the transfer agreement had been forged. The specialist determined that the signature had been transferred from several different documents. The bank audit showed that the money Andria had transferred from the company accounts had been used for personal purchases and Polina’s expensive apartment.

Andria was arrested not in the courtroom, but near the garage of our old house, when he was trying to leave the country with suitcases.

I did not witness this.

I did not want to watch his humiliation.

The court ended our marriage. Ownership of the company was returned to me. The house was sold because in those rooms the boys encountered their father’s lie at every corner.

Andria was allowed to see the children only in the presence of a specialist. At the first meeting, Maksim asked him:

“Why did you say that Mom had nothing?”

Andria could not say anything for a long time.

!!!  Meu marido me expulsou grávida por causa da amante, mas anos depois, ao me ver no altar, sua mãe perdeu o sorriso

“I don’t know,” he whispered.

Ostat shook his head.

“You do know. You just don’t want to say.”

Andria began to cry.

The boys did not hug him.

I was not glad about his pain then either. I only felt that for the first time I was no longer obliged to comfort him instead of him.

Three months later we moved into a small, bright apartment on the other side of the city. The boys planted mint in pots on the windowsill. After returning from school, Maksim drew the company’s new logo, while Ostat drew trucks in an old notebook.

I began managing the company.

On the very first day I told the employees:

“No one here will be punished for telling the truth.”

Marina became head of the finance department. Beside her desk we placed a small wooden box — the one with which she had brought us the recordings.

Every morning I opened the room’s window. The city noise came in, but this time it no longer seemed like danger. It was life.

One evening, when the first snow fell, I received a message from Andria.

“I want to talk to you. I will explain everything. Can we start over?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“Starting over is possible where the truth has not been hidden. But we have already moved forward.”

He wrote to me again.

“I still love you.”

I put the phone down.

I did not answer anymore.

That night the boys rushed into my bed. Maksim held a new paper airplane in his hand. On its wing was written: “Our home.”

“Mom, do you still have this key?” Ostat asked me.

I took the small copper key from my pocket. Its surface had darkened with the years, but on the edge there was still a small trace of the first office’s paint.

“I do,” I told him.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Am Tag nach der Beerdigung meines Vaters forderte seine neue Erbin mich zum Packen auf, doch dann verlor sie plötzlich die Farbe

“What does it open now?”

I placed the key on my palm and went to the window. Outside, snow was silently covering the old tracks.

“That which we built ourselves.”

Both boys took my hand.

For the first time, the key was no longer an object from the past.

It was a door.

And this time, I held its key.

Missed the beginning?
