When They Were Demolishing the Walls of My Seaside House, I Opened the Door and My Daughter-in-Law’s Smile Disappeared in One Second

When I opened the door of my seaside house, the kitchen was in a huge garbage container, the bedroom had been turned into rubble, and my daughter-in-law stood there as if I had given her everything.

“Hannah, you came early,” Sara told me, raising a glass full of iced coffee.

She held a board in her other hand. An electric saw roared behind her. The cabinets that my late husband and I had chosen after years of dreaming had been removed from the walls. Oak fragments lay in the dust.

“What is happening in my house?” I asked.

Sara smiled.

“We are renovating. My parents have to retire next month, and they will move here.”

David stood behind me. My son did not look me in the eyes.

I was sixty-two years old and had come to the coast to spend several peaceful days. Managing other people’s schedules at the clinic for an entire year had exhausted me. On the way, I thought only about how I would sit on the veranda with hot tea in my hand and my husband’s old ivory watch, whose ticking always calmed me.

But construction trucks stood in the yard. They had placed a huge container in the flower bed. They had left the front door open.

I bought this house five years ago with the money from my husband’s life insurance. He did not live long enough to buy a small house by the sea, but I believed that this dream still had to live. I had chosen every cabinet, balcony chair, and photograph hanging on the wall.

Now Sara’s parents were planning to spend their retirement in my memories.

“David,” I addressed my son.

He rubbed his neck.

“Mom, you spend only a few weeks a year here. Sara’s parents need a house. If you look at it practically, the place was standing empty.”

“My house has never been empty.”

“We are increasing the property’s value,” Sara said.

“You are destroying my property.”

Silence fell. Hammer blows could be heard in the distance.

I entered the bedroom. The bed was gone. They had removed the carpet, exposing the floorboards. A place for expanding the new bathroom had been marked on the wall with blue paint tape.

“It will be wonderful,” Sara told me, following behind me and clicking her heels on the wooden floor. “White cabinets, stone countertops… My mother has very refined taste.”

She pointed toward the small guest room.

“We packed your things into boxes. You will sleep here when you come.”

“Am I supposed to sleep as a guest in my own house?”

Sara crossed her arms.

“It will be their main residence. You have your own house in the city.”

My clothes had been stuffed into cardboard boxes. My favorite blanket had been thrown into a garbage bag. They had neither asked nor warned me.

!!!  My daughter hid the humiliation in her husband’s house, but when I made one call, his mother stopped smiling for the first time

“Who is paying for this work?” I asked.

Sara’s face lit up.

“We transferred the advance to the emergency credit card. Tomorrow they are starting the heavy plumbing.”

At that moment I understood how far they had gone.

Three years earlier David had lost his job. I added him as an additional user on my high-limit card so that he could cover real emergency expenses. He found a job soon, but I never remembered to remove him.

I trusted my son. Sara considered that trust permission.

I entered the back room and locked the door. They probably thought I would give in.

I opened the computer. I immediately saw the first entry on the account: a payment of fifteen thousand dollars for coastal construction.

Within a few minutes I canceled David’s access. I froze the account. Then I transferred the savings to a new account and changed where my salary was deposited.

Outside, Sara was talking about her mother’s old mirror.

The next morning, the sound of heavy boots was heard on the veranda. Someone pounded on the door.

“Hannah, open up!”

I slowly drank instant coffee and opened the door. Sara stood there pale, while David’s face was gray.

“The card was declined!” she shouted. “You have to fix everything!”

“This is not a mistake.”

“Then what is it?”

A bearded man stood behind her, holding a contract.

“I’m Greg,” he said. “Your children signed for a forty-thousand-dollar job.”

I extended my hand.

“Hannah Wells. The sole owner of this house.”

Greg’s eyes moved toward David.

“You told me you were managing the family property,” he said. “You told me your mother had approved everything.”

David lowered his head.

Greg took a folded contract from his pocket and opened the last page. My name was written there, and beside it was a signature that almost exactly resembled mine.

“I did not sign this,” I said.

Sara took a step forward. Greg took out his phone.

“Hannah, should I call the police?” he asked.

David looked at me for the first time, but I had not answered yet. My finger slowly moved toward the phone screen…

“Yes,” I said at last.

Greg immediately dialed the number. Sara put her glass on the table and lowered her voice.

“Hannah, don’t make this complicated. It is a family matter.”

“You forged my signature and financed the work with my card. You cannot call this a family matter.”

David raised his hand.

“Mom, we simply knew you would refuse.”

“So you decided to write your own consent in my name?”

Greg opened the contract again.

“There is another strange thing here. Your son told me he was managing the property in trust for this house. But the public record shows only one owner.”

“Me,” I said.

Before the police arrived, the workers put down their tools. Sara pressed herself against the wall, while David quietly asked me to go outside.

“Mom, please, talk to me alone.”

“I talked to you alone five years ago, when I added you to the card. Then I gave you trust.”

His eyes flashed.

“Sara said that in the end you would help us anyway.”

“Sara said many things.”

At that moment Greg played a recorded conversation on his phone. David’s voice was heard first, followed by Sara’s laughter.

“Make the signature so no one notices,” she was saying. “Mom will give us permission anyway.”

Sara’s face changed.

The recording had not ended yet. Greg turned off the sound and looked at me.

“This did not begin yesterday,” he told me. “Before the contract, I found another document. It was filed in your son’s name.”

David whispered quickly:

“Greg, you should not show her that…”

Greg held the document out toward me. It had my address, my name, and one sentence written on it, and reading it made my breath catch…

I took the document in my hand. The paper was warm, as if Greg had hidden it in his pocket only a short time earlier.

“What is this?” I asked.

Greg looked at David.

“You told me your mother had agreed to transfer the house. You gave me this document to prove exactly that.”

Sara nodded.

“Hannah, it was just a temporary agreement. After your death, the house would belong to David anyway.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the room.

At the top of the document it said that I supposedly voluntarily gave David the right to rent out, renovate, and ultimately dispose of the house for the needs of the family. Below were my name and signature.

But the signature was not merely badly forged. It repeated the signature I had seen on my husband’s old document, which I kept at home. Someone had seen my personal files.

“I have never seen this document,” I said.

“Because we did not send it to you,” Sara replied.

David immediately looked at me.

“Mom, I wanted to tell you, but…”

“When? After they finished the walls?”

“We thought the house belonged to all of us.”

“No. You thought my silence was your right.”

Greg turned the phone on again. David’s voice sounded in the recording.

“Mom will never check. She is at the clinic, and we will manage everything.”

Then Sara’s laughter followed.

“When the parents move in, she will no longer be able to back out. She would rather leave the house than betray her son.”

David lowered his eyes.

“It was not supposed to happen this way.”

“How was it supposed to happen?” I asked. “Was I supposed to become a guest in my own house and say thank you?”

The police officer was already standing at the door. Greg handed him the contract, the document, and the recording. Sara immediately went on the defensive.

!!!  Přišla jsem do luxusní restaurace přímo po dvanáctihodinové směně a milionář se vysmál mé pomačkané uniformě — netušil, že právě ona odhalí pravdu o jeho rodině

“We only wanted a renovation. Hannah misunderstood.”

The police officer calmly replied:

“Forgery of a signature has another name.”

David’s lips trembled.

“Mom, please, do not file a report. I will return everything to you.”

“You still do not understand,” I told him. “I did not lose money. I lost my son at the moment you decided to buy your future in my name.”

That same evening, my lawyer Mirian called me. He told me that the document did not merely appear forged. According to it, David had already filed an application saying that the house was supposedly to be sold to cover debts.

“But he had no right to do that,” I said.

“That is right. However, the application has already been registered. Tomorrow morning we must file for an injunction in court.”

I stood by the window and looked at the kitchen turned into rubble. Greg’s workers had left. Sara and David had left too.

I thought I had already heard the worst.

Then Mirian quietly added:

“Hannah, there is another problem. David did not file this application alone. A woman who says she is your legal representative signed it…”

I gripped the phone more tightly.

“Who?”

Mirian waited several seconds before answering.

“The wife of your clinic director. The woman you have known personally for years…”

And that was when I realized that my son’s lie reached much deeper than this demolished house…
