My mother did not invite me home because of the baby, but after seeing my photo she acted strangely and fell silent

On my way to my mother’s birthday, I received a message on the highway: “Don’t come, this weekend we want to rest from the baby’s crying.”

The car was standing at the toll booth. My three-month-old daughter, Renata, was sleeping peacefully in a basket on the back seat, while in the trunk I had my mother’s ordered walnut cake, a gift, and a bag full of baby clothes. I read her words three times, as if on the fourth reading they would acquire a different meaning.

An hour earlier my brother, Ivane, had called me.

“What time will you arrive? I need to talk to you about a project with Father.”

That same morning Mother had asked me for four thousand five hundred pesos to pay the musicians. And now she was telling me not to come.

“Okay, have a good time,” I wrote, and then turned the car around at the exit.

I was thirty-one and processed payroll at a transportation company. In the family I had always been the “organized” one—the person who compared loans, scheduled a doctor’s appointment, and found money to cover someone else’s urgent expense.

I had lent Ivane sixty thousand pesos to open a small hamburger bakery. He returned ten thousand to me and never spoke about that subject again. At my sister Lorena’s wedding, I paid the photographer’s fee. When the roof of my parents’ house collapsed, I transferred sixty-eight thousand.

I never asked for receipts.

That was the strangest thing: at work I checked numbers every day, while with my family I brought my own money with my eyes closed.

In the evening my friend Ximena came with tacos and found me sitting on the floor beside the baby’s crib.

“This wasn’t because of the baby’s crying,” she told me after reading the message. “If they did not want you to come for a few hours, they would have told you that. They did not want you. You and Renata.”

I could not answer.

Two weeks later Ximena invited me to Valle de Bravo. Two people were no longer going to the large house rented for a work meeting of her partners.

“Bring Renata too,” she told me before I could ask the question.

That one sentence was enough.

The house overlooked a lake, there was a fire pit in the garden, and the rooms were so large that even the baby’s crying did not bother the walls. For the first time no one sighed when I got up from the table to put the baby to sleep. One woman even postponed a meeting.

On the last day Ximena took a photo of me on the terrace: Renata was sleeping on my chest, and her tiny hand was clutching the white wool scarf wrapped around my neck. Below the photo I wrote only: “A few days for air.”

Within two hours my phone filled with messages.

Lorena asked who had paid.

Ivane asked about the rent for the house.

Father wrote to me: “Good, at least you had some fun.”

But Mother got straight to the point.

“If you have money for such luxury, you should remember your family too. Forty-two thousand pesos in property tax has accumulated, and your father is worried.”

I answered that the trip had been an invitation.

“You can still help us,” she wrote to me.

I was about to put down the phone when Ivane’s message appeared in the family group: “Mom, don’t tell her about the loan. Talk to her only about the tax.”

Ten seconds had not even passed when “Message deleted” appeared on the screen.

But I had already taken a screenshot.

That night, for the first time, I did not feel guilty. Only one precise question came to me: how many times had they asked me for money for one reason, when in reality they were paying for something completely different?

In the morning I began downloading bank statements, and that was exactly when I realized that the answer would be heavier than I imagined…

In the morning I downloaded four years of bank statements. I separated the transfers to Mother, Father, and Ivane. Two hours later a number appeared on the screen: three hundred twenty-six thousand pesos.

I could not explain the purpose of half the amount.

In old messages I found: “Roof—sixty-eight thousand,” “Father’s medicines—fourteen thousand five hundred,” “Tax—thirty-one thousand.” There were receipts almost nowhere.

I wrote to Father:

“Send me the complete tax receipt; I will verify it online.”

He sent me a file twenty minutes later. The actual debt turned out to be eleven thousand eight hundred sixty pesos.

The roofer told me that the work cost twenty-four thousand, the insurance had also paid, and my parents had given him only eighteen thousand.

Lorena admitted that the wedding photographer had been short twelve thousand, not twenty-eight.

Then she sent me pictures of the family chat. Mother had written: “Camila transferred the roof money. Let’s give thirty-five to Ivane, otherwise he will lose the bakery.”

In another message it said that of the amount requested for Father’s medicines, they had paid only six thousand two hundred at the pharmacy.

I met Father at a café.

“I did not know they were making you give so much,” he told me.

“Now you know.”

In the evening I called Mother.

“On Saturday I will meet everyone. This time I will come not with money, but with a folder.”

Her voice changed.

“Do not turn the family into an audit.”

“You turned my life into a bank.”

On Saturday I put the folder on the table. Mother reached toward it, but before she could open it, someone knocked hard on the door…

Ivane was standing at the door. He held a black leather bag in his hand, and his face looked as if he already knew what I intended to do.

Mother immediately looked toward me.

“Who did you bring?”

“I did not bring anyone,” I told her. “You all came by yourselves.”

It was Saturday afternoon. The windows in my parents’ living room were closed, and the smell of old coffee and dampness mingled in the room. On the table lay my folder, a red pen, and Renata’s small yellow sock, which had fallen out of the bag.

Father sat down silently. Lorena stood by the door. Ivane put the bag on the floor.

“Do you have to talk about all this in front of the baby?” Mother asked me.

“The baby is not here,” I answered. “She is with Ximena. But your words because of her must not make me forget.”

I opened the folder.

“In four years I transferred three hundred twenty-six thousand pesos for you. The confirmed real expense is not even one hundred seventy-nine thousand. The money alone whose purpose you hid from me is one hundred forty-seven thousand six hundred pesos.”

Mother struck the table with her hand.

“Are you declaring us thieves?”

“I am declaring nothing about you. I am reading your own chat.”

I turned on the phone and played the recording. Mother’s voice was heard: “Camila transferred the roof money. Let’s give thirty-five to Ivane, just don’t tell her.” Then Ivane’s voice: “If we ask again, she will still give it to us. Camila cannot say no.”

The ticking of the clock in the room became louder.

Father looked at Ivane.

“Did you say that?”

Ivane lowered his eyes.

“It is taken out of context.”

“Which part?” I asked. “The part where you count my money, or the part where you mock my refusal?”

Lorena began to cry.

“I knew twice, but not everything. I’m sorry, Camila.”

Mother stood up.

“You are destroying the family because of money.”

“No, Mother. I am simply no longer covering up what you did.”

Father looked into the folder. The tax receipt trembled in his hand.

“Why did you tell me it was forty-two thousand?”

Mother could not answer.

Ivane suddenly opened the bag and took several papers out of it.

“If you think this is only a family argument, you are mistaken. I have your signature on one document. You helped us obtain a loan. If the amount is not paid, the bank will demand it from you.”

My name was written on the paper. It looked like my signature, but I immediately recognized one small detail: the document showed the old address where I had not lived for two years already.

At that same moment the phone rang. It was an unknown number.

“Mrs. Camila?” a man’s calm voice said to me. “We received your family’s loan document. Before we give you an answer, you should know one thing: this signature does not match your other documents.”

Mother’s face froze.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“From the bank’s fraud department. And you need to come to us tomorrow morning, because another name appears in the document…”

That night I realized that my family was not only trying to hide my money from me. They were using my name too, and I had not yet seen the most dangerous part…
