The truck doors had not yet been opened all the way when I realized that something terrible was arriving at my farm that morning.
I had ordered twelve pigs.
But one animal followed another out of the fog, then a third, then a whole dark stream, until my small pen no longer looked like a farm and turned into an unfamiliar place.
I counted the first twelve and smiled. Then the doors did not close.
The thirteenth came down.
Then the thirtieth. Finally, the sixty-eighth.
“This is impossible,” I told the driver.
Wade Holloway looked over the crumpled bill of goods in his hand.
“Mrs. Whitlock, your name is here, the address is correct, and the quantity is written down too.”
“I ordered twelve!”
“I know. I was expecting twelve too.”
Behind me, at the kitchen door, stood my ten-year-old daughter Lily. A schoolbag hung from her hand, its zipper still half open.
“Mom, why do they all have a white stripe on their backs?”
I could not answer.
All sixty-eight pigs had a thin, straight, white mark running from their shoulders to their tails. It was not an ordinary spot. All of them had been made with the same precision, as if the animals’ backs had been drawn with the same line.
I am thirty-six years old and look after the small piece of land my father left me in Iowa. We never had enough money, but I knew everything that happened on my farm. I had barely prepared the old pen for twelve pigs. I had neither feed nor space for more animals.
Wade called his office.
“Check it,” he said. “There is some mistake here.”
A few minutes later he hung up and no longer looked me in the eyes.
“They say the shipment is correct.”
“How can sixty-eight animals be correct?”
“I cannot explain that to you.”
That same evening veterinarian Elliot Crane came. He touched one pig behind the ear, then ran his finger along the white stripe and was silent for a long time.
“This did not appear by accident,” he said at last.
“What does that mean?”
“Such an identical mark means one line. They come from one place. Perhaps they were bred this way for generations.”
“And why have their marks been erased?”
Elliot showed me the ear tags. Some had an unknown code, while on others it was clear that the mark had been forcibly removed.
“Someone wanted to hide their history.”
At night, two hours later, a low sound rising from the pen all at once woke me. I took a flashlight in my hand and went outside. All sixty-eight pigs stood there. Every one of them was looking toward the northern forest.
They were not moving.
Then, in one second, they lowered their heads and began rooting around normally.
In the morning a black car drove in. Blaine Wycliffe got out of it, the son of a powerful family whose surname was known throughout the county. He wore clean boots, as if mud did not exist for him.
“These animals are not yours,” he told me.
“Then why did they come onto my land?”
“Our company will take them away.”
“Until you explain to me, you will not take anything away.”
Blaine handed me a folder of documents.
“This is a genetic research program. If you detain them, you may face an inspection and accelerated collection of your debts.”
He knew the amount of my loan. He knew Lily’s school. He knew that my deadline with the bank expired in two weeks.
“You investigated my life,” I told him.
“I am only checking what belongs to us.”
Before leaving, he looked at the animals. Not like a farmer, but like a man searching for a lost object.
That night I decided I would not let a single pig go until I learned the truth. The next morning I found a small copper bell in my father’s old box, with three cracks. When I was a child, he told me it had hung at the gate of the northern plot.
Inside the bell lay a folded piece of paper. One code was written on it—exactly the one I had seen on one of the pigs’ ear tags.
My hand reached toward the folder when the sound of car brakes rang out in the yard and someone shouted behind the door…
The door opened so violently that the copper bell struck the wall and rang three times.
The woman who entered turned out to be Nora, Elliot Crane’s assistant. She held an old map in her hand.
“I saw this code in your father’s land documents,” she told me.
On the map, a plot beyond the northern forest was marked. My father had sold it fifteen years earlier, but a small structure remained deep in the land, which the new owner had never mentioned.
“Blaine told me there was nothing there,” I said.
Nora shook her head.
“There was a closed breeding station there. Your father worked on it.”
“Why did he hide it from me?”
“Probably because someone wanted to take it from him.”
That same evening we went into the forest. The station’s door hung on a rusty lock. When we cut the lock, the smell of paper, medicines, and old sawdust struck us from inside.
Dozens of photographs hung on the wall. Every pig had the same white line on its back.
On the table lay a small envelope sealed in my name.
Inside it was written only one sentence: “If sixty-eight came together, the Wycliffes have already realized that you found the way.”
At that moment a branch broke outside.
Nora turned off the flashlight.
Blaine’s voice came from the forest.
“Mara, open the envelope. Now you must learn why your father chose you specifically…”
Nora seized my arm and pressed me against the wooden wall. The footsteps outside stopped, but I could still hear Blaine’s voice.
“You are not alone, Blaine,” I said.
“I know. That is why I came.”
The door opened slowly. Blaine stood on the threshold, and two men stood behind him. They held legal documents in their hands, but their eyes looked only at the envelope.
“Open it,” he said.
“First tell me what you did to my farm.”
Blaine smiled.
“We did nothing to your farm. We simply returned what your father took.”
Nora took the envelope and carefully broke the seal. Inside were a letter written in my father’s hand and a small memory device. Elliot connected the device to an old laptop. My father appeared on the screen. He was sitting in the same room, and now the same photographs could be seen on the wall behind him.
“Mara, if you are watching this, значит—”
Nora immediately stopped the recording and translated the foreign word into Georgian before we continued.
“Mara, if you are watching this, the sixty-eight pigs should already be with you. They are my herd, but not in the meaning the Wycliffes claim. Over the years I created a line that makes pigs resistant to serious diseases. Blaine’s family wanted to sell the results, and instead of helping farmers, began taking ownership rights.”
Blaine clenched his jaw.
“This is an illegal false recording.”
My father’s voice continued.
“I transferred their rights to a public agricultural fund. The documents were hidden by a lawyer I trusted, but the Wycliffes forcibly took the station from me. The sixty-eight animals are the final generation. Bringing them together means that you saved the farm and the evidence is with you.”
In the recording my father placed a folder on the table. Inside, the original transfer agreement, bank transfers, and forged papers signed by Blaine’s father could be seen.
Such silence fell over the room that I heard the rustling of leaves outside.
“All of this will be copies,” Blaine whispered.
“I have the originals,” I said and took my phone from my pocket. “Elliot has already sent them to a lawyer.”
The color disappeared from Blaine’s face.
My father’s recording stopped on the final sentence: “If Blaine comes himself, know that the second file is no longer on this farm. It is with the person whom Blaine cannot frighten.”
At that moment Nora’s phone rang. She listened, then turned back to me.
“The police are on the way, but the call was from another city. Your father’s lawyer says the second file is already in the courthouse.”
Blaine stepped back for the first time.
But precisely then one of his men looked out the window and quietly said that it was not police cars, but fire, that could be seen in the direction of the farm…
