My Mother’s Friend Promised to Humiliate Me in Front of Real Soldiers, but When He Returned to the Room, the Smile Suddenly Faded from His Face

That evening, my mother’s friend gathered five soldiers in the living room, while he locked me in the kitchen and humiliated me so that everyone could hear.

“Stay here until I call you,” Martin Hale told me, placing his hand on the doorknob. “I don’t want you to make a fool of yourself in front of real military men.”

Laughter came from the room behind him. The brown wooden door slowly closed, but it did not lock completely. Through the gap beneath it, I could see the warm light of the living room. I stood by the kitchen table, holding my mother’s old ceramic cup, on which a small golden bird was painted.

Anger boiled in my heart, but I showed nothing on my face.

“Martin said that you are looking for a job,” an unfamiliar man’s voice came from the room.

“At this age she still has not found her place,” Martin replied. “Some people understand responsibility only when someone forces them.”

My mother was silent.

That silence hurt me the most.

My name was Claire Bennett. I was thirty-one years old, a serving Army major and a military intelligence officer. I had been temporarily sent to Georgia on an assignment about which I was not to say a single word to civilians. Visiting my mother for a few days was my only free time.

Martin did not know any of this.

He thought I was simply a confused woman who had no direction in life. For two days I deliberately left him with that impression. I listened to him tell stories about his “great military career,” standing by the hat hanging near the back door and claiming that he had once been a sergeant major of the highest rank.

In golden letters on the hat it said: “Sergeant Major, Retired.”

Every time I looked at him, I knew that I was looking at a lie.

Four years earlier I had seen his surname in the military archives. Martin Hale had never served in the position he claimed. In fact, his military service had lasted only a few months, and he had been dismissed for disciplinary reasons.

But that evening I was still silent.

“Claire!” my mother called from the doorway.

“Yes?”

“Bring the tea.”

Martin immediately added:

“And keep your head down. Do not interrupt the guests.”

My fingers tightened around the cup. The golden bird touched my thumb.

I entered the room, put down the tea, and heard Martin telling a story about an operation supposedly carried out abroad.

!!!  Mis padres biológicos ocuparon la primera fila de mi graduación, pero cuando el director tocó un sobre sellado, mi padre dejó de sonreír

One of the guests lowered his head and listened carefully. A second shifted awkwardly in his armchair. The third, a blonde woman, looked only at my face.

Martin gestured to me with his hand.

“Back to the kitchen.”

I did not move.

“Before you go,” he continued, “tell everyone why you have achieved nothing in life.”

Silence fell over the room.

My mother said quietly:

“Martin, enough.”

“No, Ellen,” he replied. “Discipline is not learned without pain.”

At that moment I finally decided that the silence was over.

I went upstairs. From the bedroom wardrobe I carefully took out a dark green military uniform, attached the insignia to my chest, and fastened my belt. I put my service identification in the inside pocket. I looked at myself in the mirror.

I was not afraid.

Only tired.

When I came back downstairs, the conversation was still continuing. Martin was telling how hundreds of soldiers had obeyed him when I stopped in the doorway.

The blonde woman noticed me first. Then the young soldier sitting beside her looked at me. The cup in his hand stopped.

Martin gave a snort.

“Here our lost general has returned.”

I walked toward the center of the room.

The young soldier stood up so quickly that the chair overturned on the floor.

“Room, attention!” he shouted.

Everyone fell silent.

The smile disappeared from Martin’s face.

The blonde woman shifted her gaze to my service insignia, then looked at my mother.

“Mrs. Bennett,” she said, “do you know who your daughter is?”

Martin raised his hand as if he intended to stop her, but just then a loud knock sounded on the door and someone called from outside:

“Major Bennett, we have no more time. The file has been brought…”

The door opened and Captain Daniel Ward entered the room. He held a black folder, whose corners glistened with drops of water.

“Major, apologies for the delay,” he said to me.

Martin rushed to the window.

“This is my house. Leave this place immediately!”

Daniel looked at him calmly.

“You cannot give her orders.”

“I served in the army for twenty years!”

“Then you should know the military rules,” Daniel said. “Especially when you threaten a senior officer.”

My mother covered her mouth with her hand.

“Claire, what is happening?”

I went to her and took her hand.

“You will learn everything soon. But first you must hear what Martin was saying about you and me.”

Daniel opened the folder’s clasp. Inside lay several sheets of paper, a small memory device, and a sealed envelope.

Martin stepped back.

“This is illegal.”

“It would be illegal only if the recording had been made without your consent,” Daniel replied. “But you installed the camera yourself.”

Martin froze.

Daniel put the device on the table and turned it on. Martin’s own voice rang through the room: “I will soon bring Claire under control just like the others. Ellen will not be able to stop me either.”

My mother lowered her eyes.

But I knew that the recording was only the first layer. The main document was still in the sealed envelope, and my mother’s signature could be seen on it…

Daniel put the envelope on the table. Everyone in the room looked toward it. Outside, rain struck the windows of the house, while the clock hanging on the wall loudly counted every second.

“Claire,” my mother said quietly, “what is written there?”

“I don’t know,” I answered. “But Mother’s signature means that this is not only about Martin’s lies.”

Martin quickly moved forward.

“Ellen, tell them that this cannot be opened.”

For the first time, my mother looked directly into his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because this is a family matter.”

“Family?” Her voice trembled. “For two years you have been telling me that Claire is irresponsible, and I saw everything through your words.”

I touched the sealed envelope. The wax had cracked slightly under my finger. Then I broke the seal.

My name was written on the very first page.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“This is an official report of the Military Security Service,” he said. “It describes how Martin Hale gathered information about my mission, how he sent the address of my mother’s house to outsiders, and how he tried to confirm Claire’s service identity.”

Martin’s face went pale.

“Nonsense.”

“No,” I said. “The document contains your handwriting. It says here that you searched my room for documents and took photographs of them.”

The blonde officer took out her phone.

“We have his messages too.”

“You cannot prove anything!” Martin shouted.

I picked up the second sheet.

“There is one more thing written here. You took out a loan in my mother’s name and planned to sell the house. You considered my unexpected arrival a threat.”

My mother sat down on the chair. Beside her stood the cup with the golden bird, which I had held in my hand all evening.

“Martin, is this true?” she asked.

Martin was silent.

“Answer me!”

“I was only trying to maintain control,” he said at last. “You could not manage your own life.”

“Could I not manage my own house either?” My mother’s voice broke.

Daniel put the last sheet on the table.

“You have not yet seen the most important thing. This is a temporary court order that will come into force tomorrow morning. Martin Hale is forbidden to approach this house and to conduct any financial operation in Ellen Bennett’s name.”

Martin turned toward the door, but two uniformed investigators were standing outside.

For the first time I felt my mother’s shoulders drop slightly.

However, at that same moment my phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. The caller said only one sentence:

“Major, you still do not know whom Martin was working with…”
