My sister announced my divorce at a family dinner, but when my husband made me sign over the house, his face turned pale

That evening my sister took my husband’s hand as if he already belonged to her, while I was still considered his wife.

It was Sunday. The smell of freshly baked ravioli and fried butter came from Mother’s kitchen. Father had placed a heavy bottle of wine on the table, while I held a small copper key in my hand—the old key Mother had given me in childhood and told me that the door to happiness must always be opened by me myself.

At that moment I remembered those words, but I could not understand why.

Caroline was already sitting at the table. She was smiling far too calmly. She had the kind of smile that makes a person seem to know something.

“What are you laughing at?” I asked and hung my bag on the chair.

“Nothing.”

“You do not smile like that when nothing is happening.”

She looked at Martin.

“You will find out soon.”

Martin pressed his fork against the plate so hard that a sharp sound rang against the porcelain. I immediately felt my stomach tighten.

Mother poured us wine. For several minutes nobody spoke. Only the ticking of the wall clock could be heard, and Mother’s bracelet struck the edge of the glass.

Caroline raised her glass.

“I want to toast changes.”

Father knitted his brows.

“What changes?”

“New beginnings.”

I looked at Martin.

“Will someone explain to me what is happening?”

Martin lowered his eyes.

“Elene, I need to talk to you.”

“Talk to me now.”

Caroline gave a quiet chuckle.

“I think Martin has already made a decision.”

I turned toward her.

“How do you know what decision my husband has made?”

Silence fell over the table. It was the kind of silence in which everyone’s breathing can even be heard.

Martin hid his hand under the table.

“We are going to get divorced,” Caroline said.

For several seconds I could not understand what she had said.

“Who is going to?”

“You and Martin.”

I laughed. Not because it was funny. It was simply that my mind refused to accept the truth.

“Good joke. Now eat.”

Nobody smiled.

I turned to Martin.

“Tell me this is nonsense.”

He raised his head, but he was no longer looking into my eyes.

“We have to separate.”

The fork fell from Mother’s hand.

“Martin, what are you saying?”

Caroline placed her hand on his.

That one touch was enough. Twelve years collapsed for me in one second.

“How long?” I asked.

Martin bit his lips.

“Eight months.”

I looked at their intertwined fingers.

“For eight months my sister has been with my husband, and she still came to our house every week?”

“I did not want to hurt you,” Caroline said.

“You did not want to?”

I gripped the back of the chair because my legs were trembling.

“You sat beside me, ate my mother’s food, and met my husband. What is that called?”

“You cannot control love.”

“You may not be able to control love, but betrayal requires a decision.”

Father stood up. His face turned gray.

“Caroline, let go.”

But she squeezed Martin’s hand even more tightly.

Then she took a white folder from her bag.

“There is one more thing,” she said.

She placed the folder on the table. Martin looked at it as if he knew what was inside, while I felt that there was no air left in the room.

“We are going to get married,” Caroline added.

Father struck the table with his fist.

“You are still a married man!”

Martin said quietly:

“Everything will be over soon.”

I grabbed my bag and stood up.

“Then get married.”

Caroline’s smile widened.

“Just like that?”

“Very simply.”

I walked toward the door, but stopped at the threshold.

“You will keep the house too.”

Martin immediately turned pale.

“Which house are you talking about?”

“Our house.”

Caroline looked over with a victorious expression.

“I knew you would understand.”

I clenched the copper key in my pocket.

“Yes,” I told her. “Now I understand everything.”

Three days later Martin appeared at my apartment. He held papers in his hand and was trying to wear the same smile he had used on me before.

“We will sign the transfer,” he told me.

I put the folder on the table.

“Of course.”

He opened it quickly. At the sight of the very first page, his expression changed. His fingers froze.

“What is this?”

I was about to answer when someone knocked hard on the door. Martin turned around, while I moved toward the folder and reached out to take out its last page…

My mother was standing at the door. Her eyes were red, and she held a small bag in her hand.

“I need to talk to you alone,” she told me.

Martin stepped in front of her.

“Now is not the time for this.”

“This is exactly the time,” Mother replied.

I moved toward the door.

“Come in, Mom.”

Martin looked at the folder.

“Elene, think carefully before you sign.”

“I thought for six years. And you lied for eight months.”

Mother asked quietly:

“What is written in these papers?”

“The thing that frightens Martin very much.”

She leaned toward me.

“Does Caroline know?”

“Not yet.”

Martin went toward the door, but I called to him:

“Do not leave. Everything has to be clarified here today.”

He looked at me.

“You will regret this.”

“I already regret trusting you.”

When Martin left, Mother took my hand. Her fingers were cold.

“Father found something,” she said.

“What?”

“On the day Caroline announced your marriage, she failed to take one detail into account.”

“Which one?”

Mother took a folded paper from her bag, but immediately hid it again.

“Only you should see this for now.”

I went to the window. Outside, Martin got into his car. He called someone on the phone and spoke with angry gestures.

Mother said quietly:

“He thought the house was the only danger.”

“And what is the real danger?”

She handed me the paper.

My name was written on it, but one sentence placed below made me stop breathing. At that moment I realized that Martin did not want to end our marriage, but to hide something…

My hands trembled so much over the paper I had received from Mother that I had to read the text twice. It was a notary’s certificate that Father had obtained that same morning. Six years earlier, when buying the house, Martin had loans and unpaid debts. The bank could seize his property, so the house was registered entirely in my name. But at the end of the document there was another note: Martin had signed an agreement according to which he would have no claim to the property if our marriage ever ended because of his betrayal.

“How did you find this?” I asked Mother.

“Father found it in an old folder. Then he checked it with a lawyer.”

“Did Martin know about this agreement?”

“He knew. That is why he is trying to make you sign another paper.”

That same evening Father brought a lawyer, Mr. Dato, to my apartment. A coffee stain was still visible on the table, while my childhood copper key lay beside the papers.

Dato adjusted his glasses.

“The document brought by Martin is not an agreement to transfer the house. It is a relinquishment of rights by which you lose control over your own property.”

“He told me it was only a transfer.”

“Because you were not supposed to read the full text.”

Mother held her breath.

“And if Elene had signed?”

“Getting the house back would have become very difficult.”

At that moment Martin called me. The ring sounded sharply in the room.

“Answer,” Father said.

I picked up the phone.

“What do you want?”

“Your mother has confused some things for you. Let us settle this calmly.”

“You wanted to take my house.”

“Our house.”

“I read the documents.”

He was silent for a long time.

“Elene, do not complicate things.”

“You complicated them when you began a relationship with my sister and then thought I would give you everything.”

“I love Caroline.”

“Then stay with her. And do not touch the house again.”

!!!  My husband threw his fourteen-year-old daughter out of the house, but after one phrase of mine, his mother’s smile froze on her face

Martin lowered his voice.

“You do not know what will happen if you do not sign this.”

“Now, for the first time, I know exactly what I have to do.”

I ended the call. A few seconds later Caroline called me.

“Elene, Martin says that you are deceiving him.”

“Did he tell you that the house is his?”

Silence fell.

“He said that you bought it together.”

“I paid half the money. And he was in debt.”

“You were going to give it to us, weren’t you?”

“No. I gave you my past only in that moment. Not my life.”

Caroline’s voice trembled.

“This house is very important to us.”

“Then you should have thought from the beginning.”

The next morning I went to the lawyer’s office to officially protect my property. Dato put the documents into a folder and told me:

“All this would be enough. But your father gave me one more thing.”

He placed a small memory card on the table.

“What is this?”

“The recording from the cameras in the family house. From the night when Martin and Caroline remained there alone.”

Their conversation appeared on the screen. Martin was saying that after the divorce he would be able to persuade me. And Caroline answered:

“The main thing is that the house remains ours. Everything else will be settled.”

The recording ended, but Dato’s phone rang immediately. He listened, his face changed, and he turned toward me.

“Elene, the police called me. Martin tried to access your bank accounts this morning…”
