My Son Told Me the House Was Already His, But When He Left My Wedding Photo by the Trash, Daniela’s Smile Disappeared

That day, when my son entered my house like a stranger and ordered the locks to be changed, I stood behind the neighbor’s curtain and could barely hold my breath.

It was three thirty when a large truck stopped in the street. The deep sound of its engine entered Elena’s small living room, while the windowpanes trembled slightly. I had been hiding at Elena’s house for a week because I had told Diego that I was supposedly going to Morelia, to my sister.

Elena lifted the curtain slightly.

“They’ve arrived, Mariana.”

My fingers closed around the ceramic cup. A small golden bird was painted on the cup, which Roberto had given me on the twenty-fifth anniversary of our marriage. Now I was looking at the bird and thinking that in the same house where Roberto had first told me “I love you,” my own son was throwing my belongings into the street.

Daniela got out of the car first. She was wearing a white coat, holding a phone in her hand, and had such a calm expression, as if she were taking possession of her own house. Behind her came her father, Rafael. Then several relatives appeared, and finally a man dressed in a black suit, with a leather bag.

Diego got out of the car last.

For a moment he stared at the door of our house. I knew that look. He used to look like that in childhood when he thought he had broken something and was waiting for me to notice.

But this time he was not planning to come to me.

“Are you sure that everything is arranged?” Daniela asked.

“Mother went away for a week,” Diego answered. “We do not need more time.”

“The locks will be changed today,” said the man in the suit. “I also have the documents with me.”

Elena lowered the curtain farther.

“Mariana, shall we call the police?”

“Not yet,” I whispered.

My voice was so quiet, as if I were hiding the truth even from myself. In the morning, before I supposedly left the house, I took Roberto’s old leather folder from the bottom drawer of the wardrobe. It contained the house documents, payment receipts, and those documents whose significance even I had not fully understood until now.

I always left that folder in the same place. But today it was lying in Elena’s kitchen cabinet, between the sugar jar and the tea box.

Sounds came from the house. A door opening. Heavy furniture scraping across the floor. Daniela’s sharp orders.

“Take all of this away.”

“The lady’s clothes too?” one of the workers asked.

“They are no longer needed.”

!!!  Mi prometido llegó con mi hermana usando mi anillo, y cuando exigieron que sonriera, alguien detrás de mí dejó de hacerlo

Then I heard Diego’s voice.

“Take down the photographs too. The rooms must be cleared.”

Elena put her hand on mine.

“He knows that this was your house.”

“He knows,” I answered. “He simply hopes that I cannot prove it.”

Five minutes later I saw Roberto’s wooden frame in the yard. It was our wedding photograph. Taken forty years ago. I was standing in a white dress, while Roberto had that strange, shy smile that never changed until his death.

Daniela placed the frame beside the trash bin.

At that moment something broke inside my heart, but no tear came. I only took the phone and looked at the number the lawyer had sent me the previous evening.

“Will you call now?” Elena asked me.

“No.”

“Then whom are you waiting for?”

In the yard, the man in the suit went to the door of the house. Rafael stood beside him. Diego raised his head and looked toward the street, as if he were waiting for someone to arrive.

I went to the window and typed one word into the phone: Ready.

The answer came immediately.

The doorbell rang.

Everyone in the house stopped. Diego slowly turned his head. Daniela almost dropped the phone from her hand.

Elena asked me:

“Is that the person?”

I was already walking toward the door when the bell rang a second time. A black car stopped at the end of the street, and the woman who got out raised a sealed folder in her hand. Her foot stepped onto the first stair, while her hand approached the door handle…

The door opened and lawyer Sofía entered the house. Behind her stood two witnesses, and they already had a camera switched on.

“Mrs. Mariana,” Sofía told me, “it is time for everyone to learn what he signed.”

Diego became pale.

“Mother? You were here?”

“The entire time.”

Daniela snickered, but the laughter quickly died away.

“Is this an eviction from the house?” Rafael asked.

“No,” Sofía answered. “This is a warning that an attempt at unlawful entry and the destruction of belongings have been recorded.”

The man in the suit opened the folder.

“I only have the property transfer agreement.”

“That is exactly why you are here,” I said. “I want you to read aloud who this house belongs to.”

He took out the first sheet, then the second. His fingers trembled.

Diego came toward me.

“Mother, I did not want it this way. Daniela said that you would only leave for a little while.”

“And the locks?”

He looked away.

!!!  A férjem mindenki előtt megcsókolta a titkárnőjét, aztán a kijáratnál megfordult és elsápadt

Sofía put the phone on the table.

“Before any of you says another word, you must see the recording Mariana made during the night.”

Daniela’s voice sounded from the screen: If Mariana leaves the house, everything will be ours.

A heavy silence fell over the room.

But the recording was not yet the most dangerous thing. Sofía took a small, sealed envelope from the folder and looked at Diego.

“This was left by Roberto. It was to be opened only when someone forcibly drove Mariana out of the house…”

Sofía placed the envelope on the table. Its paper was yellowish, and a date written in Roberto’s hand could be seen on the corner. Everyone in the room fell silent as if even the walls were waiting to hear what he would read.

“This is impossible,” Diego said. “Father died three years ago.”

“That is why we waited for you,” Sofía answered.

She carefully broke the seal and took out the sheet. I recognized Roberto’s handwriting immediately. The letters leaned slightly to the right, as always when he had something important to say.

Sofía read aloud:

“If this letter is being read, it means that they are trying to remove Mariana from the house. The house is not only her residence. It belongs entirely to Mariana, because she paid the purchase price, while my share is transferred to her forever. My son has the right to return only with his mother’s permission. No one may change the locks, no one may sell the house, and no one may touch her belongings.”

Diego struck the chair with his hand.

“Father hid this from me?”

“No,” I said. “You simply never asked.”

Daniela was looking down at the sheet. A small coffee stain had appeared on her white coat, probably when the cup hit the table.

“This letter may be forged,” Rafael said.

Sofía took out a second sheet.

“Notarial certification, signature examination, and bank statements. Also the house payments for the last twenty-two years. All the payments are from Mariana’s account.”

The man in the suit lowered his head.

“Then I had no right to be here.”

“Neither did the others,” I said.

Diego stopped in front of me. His eyes were red.

“Mother, I only wanted to help.”

“Help does not quietly change locks.”

“Daniela told me that you were going to leave the house anyway.”

“And you believed her because you wanted it to be true.”

This time he could not find an answer.

Sofía played the recording again. Daniela’s voice rang clearly through the room: We will wait a few days, then tell her that she sold the house and no longer has the right to return.

!!!  4. RÉSZ — Ötéves lányomat két rendőr előtt találta zokogva a családom, de amikor megkérdeztem, mi történt, anyám elsápadt

Daniela covered her face with her hands.

“That was a private conversation!”

“In my house, about me, to drive me out of my house,” I said. “The only thing more private than that was my patience.”

Sofía picked up the phone.

“Now I am calling the police.”

Diego turned toward the door, but two officers were already standing there. One of them pointed at Rafael’s bag.

“Did you take these belongings out of your house?”

Rafael said nothing.

Just then Sofía’s phone rang. She listened, her expression changed, and she came over to me.

“Mariana, the bank called me. This morning someone tried to withdraw money from your account. And this person can only be a member of your family.”

Diego raised his head.

“I did not take any money.”

Sofía looked at the screen.

“Another person appears on the bank camera. But that person was using a power of attorney issued in your name.”

I looked at the document and my blood froze. My signature was on the power of attorney, although I had never written it.

Sofía added quietly:

“Whoever did this already knows that we found the recording. And that person is not in your house now…”
