My Brother Humiliated Me on a Warship and Ordered Me Detained, but His Smile Vanished the Moment He Heard Five Words

When the military police officer took my pass from my hand, his face first turned pale, and then he looked at me as if before him stood not a crime, but his entire career. It was eight ten in the morning at the San Diego naval base. The harbor smelled of salt water, diesel, and burnt coffee. Beside me stood a huge gray ship, aboard which my younger brother served.

In the Owens family, I had always been the second child, even though for Father military service had been his whole life. When Brandon enlisted in the Navy immediately after finishing school, Father told the neighbors for three weeks that his son was continuing the family’s true tradition. When I graduated from the military academy with the highest marks, he only said:

“Good result. I suppose they even prepared a comfortable office for you.”

When I was put in charge of field command, he asked whether the service came with a personal parking space. On the day I received two stars, he looked at my photograph for a long time and snickered.

“Apparently they are handing out titles more cheaply these days.”

I did not answer. Over the years, I learned that some people understand the truth only when they themselves end up beneath their own words.

That morning I had with me only a black leather folder and a dark amber badge chain. A pass hung hidden on the chain. Mother had made this small thing for me when I received my first high position. On the back, she had written in her own hand: “Do not let anyone force you to prove yourself.”

I touched these words with my finger and headed toward the ship’s gangway.

“Kasia!” Brandon’s voice sounded behind my back. “Are you really planning to come in here wearing that ridiculous outfit?”

Several sailors laughed. I stopped.

“Good morning, Brandon.”

“Does Father know you stole Mother’s ironing board? Look, boys, she is playing at being a real military officer.”

“Do not touch me.”

“Or what will you do? Call the school principal?”

His fingers tightened on my shoulder. Then he grabbed the chain and tore the pass from me so that a thin scratch remained on my neck. He raised the plastic card up.

“Let’s see where they printed this toy pass.”

“Give it back.”

“First we need to find out why this woman entered a restricted military facility.”

!!!  Grandmother forbade me to walk near the abandoned house, but when she heard my explanation, the color drained from her face

He waved to the military police officers patrolling nearby.

“We have a problem here! This person entered illegally and is pretending to be an officer!”

My phone was vibrating in my pocket. Father had left three missed calls. I knew exactly what he would tell me: “Stop fighting Brandon. He is sensitive about you.” As if I were responsible for his rudeness.

Brandon tossed the pass to the police officer.

“Take her away. Before she causes problems for all of us.”

The police officer looked at the card. He wore an old plastic watch on his hand, whose band trembled nervously. The initial irritation disappeared from his face. He looked first at the gold ring, then at my name, and finally at Brandon.

“Ma’am…” he barely muttered.

“Everything is all right, officer,” I said calmly.

At that moment, the iron door on the deck opened so that its rumble spread through the harbor. A one-star admiral came out, followed by a frightened staff. The admiral looked first at the police officer, then at me, and finally at my brother, who was still smiling like a victor.

Brandon straightened his shoulders.

“Admiral, this woman…” he began.

The admiral descended the stairs. One step. A second.

I knew that his entire life now hung on one short sentence. The admiral stopped in front of me, took the pass from the police officer, and held the card with both hands. Then he looked toward Brandon and opened his mouth…

The admiral looked Brandon in the eyes and said calmly:

“This woman is your new superior.”

It was five words. But such emptiness appeared on Brandon’s face, as if the deck had disappeared beneath his feet.

“What are you saying?” he whispered.

“Major General Owens is leading an unexpected inspection today,” the admiral replied. “Her order was confirmed last night.”

My brother looked at the empty chain hanging on my chest. The pass was still in the police officer’s hand.

“But… she came in a civilian jacket.”

“Clothing does not determine rank,” I said.

The police officer immediately held the card back out to me.

“Ma’am General, please forgive me.”

“You only acted according to the information you received. Brandon acted according to what he imagined.”

The admiral glanced to the side at my brother.

“Hand over your weapon and pass. You are coming to my office now.”

!!!  Part 4 — My Husband Welcomed Me with Applause When I Left the Hospital, but the Smile Disappeared from His Face After One Question

For the first time, Brandon could not smile.

“Admiral, this is a misunderstanding. My sister simply…”

“You will choose your words carefully, Owens.”

I opened the folder. Inside, only one folded sheet of paper could be seen, but when Brandon saw it, the muscle in his throat tightened. He already suspected that my visit was not for the purpose of humiliating him.

“The inspection of the ship begins right now,” I said. “The first section is the warehouse.”

He took a step, but then asked me:

“Who gave you permission to come aboard my ship?”

I looked at his face and answered:

“Your signature.”

Fear appeared in Brandon’s eyes for the first time. He did not even notice that the admiral’s assistant quietly turned on her phone and placed it on the table. The recording had already begun…

The recording continued in the ship’s administrative room. The clock hanging on the wall showed nine twenty-one, while the metal pen lying on the table slowly turned under Brandon’s fingers.

“There is no basis for this inspection,” he said. “My reports are in order.”

“Then you should not be afraid,” I answered.

The admiral stood by the wall. His chief of staff, Maya Reed, was arranging folders on the table. One of them contained the ship’s fuel-purchase records, and the other contained my order.

“General, shall we begin with the main document?” Maya asked.

“Yes.”

She opened the black folder and placed three sheets in front of us.

“During the last six months, forty-two fuel deliveries were processed. The supplier is the same company, yet its address leads to an empty warehouse. Part of the money was transferred to the Owens family’s joint account.”

Brandon pushed back his chair so sharply that the metal scratched the floor.

“That is not my account.”

“The account is in Father’s name,” I said. “But every transfer is accompanied by your electronic signature.”

He looked at the admiral.

“This is my sister. She has always been jealous of me.”

I turned on the phone. The voice received last night sounded through the room. It was Brandon’s voice, clear and convincing:

“Let the money be transferred to Father’s account. Kasia checks nothing, because no one in the family listens to her anyway.”

Silence fell over the room.

Brandon lost color.

“This recording is illegal.”

!!!  For years, my family did not invite me on vacations, but when they saw my villa, Lea fell silent and her face changed

“It is from the camera in your workroom,” Maya said. “You turned the device on yourself so that you could record instructions for the employees.”

The admiral slowly lowered his head.

“Owens, did you falsify the ship’s supply data?”

“I was only carrying out orders.”

“Whose orders?”

Brandon could not answer.

I took a small envelope from the folder. Inside were a bank statement and a declaration signed by Father, in which he asked Brandon to take responsibility upon himself. Father was ready to save his son, as always.

“Father knew,” I said.

Brandon sat down on the chair.

“He was doing this for me.”

“No,” I answered. “Both of you were doing this against me.”

At that moment, the admiral’s phone rang. The call was short, but after ending the conversation, his face changed.

“General, the investigation no longer concerns only this ship. New data has arrived. From your father’s house.”

I took the phone. On the screen was one photograph: Father, Brandon, and an unknown contractor in a closed garage. The photograph was dated the day Father called me and told me to “forgive” Brandon.

Maya added quietly:

“They found one more file behind the photograph. If it is genuine, your brother was not only an executor…”
