Part 4 — My Son and Mother Threw Me Out of the House with My Newborn, but One Letter Left on the Door Suddenly Erased Brandon’s Smile

As soon as I saw the photograph, I stood up from the chair. Lily’s face could be seen, peaceful and helpless, in the small bed that stood in the living room at my sister’s. The picture had been taken a few minutes earlier.

“The door is locked,” the lawyer said.

“I did not have a camera by the window,” I answered.

My voice was trembling, but this time something else mixed with the fear. Anger, which was being born not for myself, but to protect Lily.

The lawyer immediately called the police. Specialists checked the number and it turned out that the message had come from an old device registered in Brandon’s work vehicle.

Brandon tried to leave the room.

“You are not going anywhere,” the officer told him.

“This is not my phone.”

“But it was sent from your car.”

Patricia covered her mouth with her hand.

“Brandon, what were you doing at that house?”

He looked at her and for the first time could not answer anything.

That same night my sister and Lily were moved to a safe place. The police checked the cameras around the house. The recordings showed Patricia’s nephew, Darren, walking by the windows and taking photographs. Brandon had paid him.

The next day Brandon’s lawyer called me.

“My client is ready to apologize,” he said.

“An apology will not erase the child’s photograph.”

“He only wants to talk.”

“I will no longer speak to a person who uses a child’s safety as a bargaining tool.”

Several hours later the lawyer called again.

“Brandon refuses to fulfill the agreement. He says he does not intend to leave the house.”

“Then the court will force him.”

But before that, one more thing had to happen.

Three days later Brandon and Patricia sat in one room at the police station. A voice recording was played on the table. They heard their own words: how they called my tiredness laziness, how they planned my expulsion, and how they intended to lie against me in court.

!!!  On New Year’s Eve My Mother-in-Law Threw Me Out of Her Own House, but at Midnight My Husband’s Face Suddenly Turned Pale

Brandon lowered his head.

“I do not remember saying that.”

The officer played the voice again.

“Do you remember now?” he asked.

In the recording Brandon’s own voice answered: “I will send her away today. Then she will say that she abandoned the family herself.”

Brandon covered his ears with his hands.

“Turn it off.”

“It is your voice,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Emily, I was angry.”

“No. You planned it.”

Patricia quietly began to cry.

“We only wanted a family.”

“A family does not throw a person out of the house with a newborn,” I answered.

In the following weeks everything proceeded through the law. Brandon was forbidden to approach me and Lily. Darren admitted that he had received money for taking the photographs. When taking her things, Patricia also took the baby’s first picture from the wall of my house, but then returned it herself, silently, in an unfolded envelope.

In court the judge listened only to the documents and the recording. I did not shout. I was not happy when Brandon was given financial obligations. I simply sat and felt how the weight accumulated over years was leaving me.

The house remained with me. The cars too. The accounts too. But the most important thing was that Lily could sleep peacefully.

Three months later I woke up alone at six in the morning at home. The first snow was falling beyond the window. The smell of coffee stood in the kitchen, and Lily’s colorful blocks lay on the floor.

I started a small consulting business. I helped women organize their financial documents and not lose their names in contracts. On my desk I always had one blank notebook and a drawing made by Lily, on which there were three yellow circles.

“Are these us?” I asked her.

Lily did not yet know a word, but she put her finger on me, then on herself, and finally on the window where snow was falling.

!!!  On the Morning of His Wedding, My Former Partner Saw My Three Three-Year-Old Children and Turned White—That Evening, His Bride Found a Second Sealed Envelope Addressed to Me

“Yes,” I told her. “Us and our new morning.”

One evening a letter came from Brandon. This time without a lawyer.

“I want to talk to you. I understand everything now. I no longer listen to my mother. We can still be a family.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time. Earlier I would have considered such words hope. Now I felt only tiredness.

In reply I wrote one sentence:

“Lily’s and my family is already where we are safe.”

Then I tore up the letter and put it in the trash can.

There was silence in the house. Not the heavy silence that remained after Brandon’s shouting, but a peaceful silence in which a child’s breathing could be heard.

I entered Lily’s room. The small glass jar stood on the shelf. Inside was her hospital bracelet, slightly yellowed, but still with clearly written letters.

I took the jar in my hand and went to the window. Outside, snow was carefully covering the sidewalk where their things had once lain.

Lily smiled in her sleep.

I returned the jar to the shelf.

This time no one would throw me out of the house again.

Missed the beginning?
