That evening my husband came home with his beloved woman and told me that carrying their luggage in London would be my only duty.
Rain struck the windows as if someone outside were warning our house. I placed the coffee cup on the wooden coaster and only then looked at them.
Tom was sitting on the sofa. He was fifty-two, but lately he imagined himself as a much more important person. Beside him Jessica was nestled, his twenty-eight-year-old employee, whose expensive coat was hanging over the back of my armchair.
“Jessica and I are moving to London,” Tom said. “You are coming too.”
“Why?”
Jessica giggled.
“Someone has to take care of us. Tom needs to look respectable at events, and at home he needs food and order.”
Tom placed his hand on hers.
“Your seat on the plane is already arranged. Not the best one, of course. It will be near the toilets, but first class will still be enough for you.”
I wrapped my fingers around the cup’s warm ceramic. My hands were trembling, but they did not see it.
“And where will you sit?”
“In the front, obviously,” Tom replied. “I am becoming head of the London branch. Jessica will work with me.”
He said it as if the position had already been registered in his name, and the city and the company had become his property.
I met Tom twenty-five years ago beside a small coffee kiosk. Then he was afraid of losing money and dreamed with me that one day we would have a large house. Now we had that house, but he entered the kitchen only when he needed something.
“Anything else?” I asked.
Tom’s face changed.
“Don’t start drama. You know your purpose there well. You will carry the luggage, arrange the apartment, and smile at our guests.”
“Your guests?”
“Don’t be stubborn, Rachel. You should be grateful that we are taking you with us.”
Jessica picked up my silver teaspoon from the table and twirled it between her fingers.
“I hope you will dress better in London. You cannot walk beside Tom there in cheap clothes.”
Only then did I first notice her wristwatch. It looked as if it had been bought from our joint account. In recent months Tom had often said that business expenses had temporarily increased.
“When is the flight?” I asked.
“In three weeks. Prepare everything.”
“I will arrange my own travel too.”
Tom fell silent. He was expecting tears. Shouting. Perhaps even me falling to my knees.
“Excellent,” he said at last. “At last, you are behaving sensibly.”
They left with a bottle of wine. Jessica’s perfume and the smell of Tom’s wet wool coat remained in the room.
I stood by the window until their car disappeared around the corner of the street. Only then did my hands begin to tremble. I quickly put down the cup because the coffee was about to spill onto the floor.
I am Rachel Sterling. Tom thought that my old jacket, trousers bought at a discount, and quiet life said everything about me.
But he did not know that most of the property left by my father was in my name. He did not know that I owned the controlling stake in Sterling Global Holdings. Nor did he know that his trading company had become a subsidiary of that holding three years earlier.
At first this secret was a test. I wanted to understand whether the man who did not know about my money loved me. Then silence became a habit.
The telephone rang. It was Arthur, the group’s chief operating officer.
“The audit has confirmed serious violations by Tom and Jessica,” he told me. “We are already collecting evidence. We need your order.”
I looked at the door through which my husband had left a few minutes earlier.
“Protect the money, preserve every record,” I replied. “Then connect me with the person who truly runs our affairs in Europe.”
Tom thought London was waiting for him. But I knew who would meet him at the airport. Arthur said something to me, and at that very moment the office-door handle slowly went down…
Arthur stood behind the door, holding a dark leather folder. His fingers gripped the handle so tightly that his fingernails had turned white.
“Are you alone?” he asked.
“Now I no longer know,” I answered.
He looked into the room and saw the receipt for Jessica’s watch on the table.
“This is on the list too,” he said. “But the money is not the worst part.”
“Then what is?”
Arthur locked the door.
“They have a new plan. Moving to London is only the beginning. Tom wants to sell the assets registered in your name before anyone realizes who owns control.”
A chill poured through my chest. For twenty-five years I had lived in one house with a man who had taken my silence for weakness.
“He will need my signature.”
“That is exactly why he is taking you with him.”
He placed the folder on the table but did not open it.
“There is a document here that will change everything. But first you should know: tonight Tom will not return alone.”
“Who is coming with him?”
Arthur looked at the telephone. An unknown number was flashing on the screen.
“A person whom your husband has hidden from the past.”
The telephone rang again. This time I answered.
For several seconds, only breathing could be heard on the other side.
Then a woman’s voice quietly told me: “Rachel, if you want to understand why Tom chose exactly this date, open the folder right now…”
I opened the top sheet of the folder. The paper had a light smell of lavender, the kind that used to fill my father’s study.
My full name was written on the very first page. Beneath it was a document transferring the controlling stake in the holding.
“I already know this,” I said.
“No, Mrs. Sterling,” Arthur replied. “Look at the next page.”
I turned the sheet over and my breath caught. The document said that for three years Tom had secretly transferred company funds to accounts opened in Jessica’s name. The money had not been spent only on gifts. He had prepared a deal to purchase the company’s European branch and entered himself as the buyer.
“He thought he would buy the branch himself?” I asked.
“He thought you would sign,” Arthur said. “He believed that no one would discover your real rights.”
At that moment the entrance door opened.
Tom entered. Jessica followed behind him. Tom still had a victorious smile on his face, but when he saw Arthur, the smile disappeared.
“What is he doing here?” he asked.
“In your house?” I replied. “It would be more correct to ask what you are doing in my company.”
Jessica giggled, although the sound immediately died.
“Is this performance again? Rachel, we have a flight to prepare for.”
Arthur raised the second sheet.
“You paid for the flight tickets from the company account. The jewelry too. Also the money with which you opened Jessica’s new account.”
Tom took a step forward.
“You have no right to interfere in my finances.”
“He does not,” I said. “I do.”
Tom looked at me. For the first time I saw him searching in my eyes for the frightened woman he had silenced for years.
“What are you saying?”
“Sterling Global Holdings is mine, Tom. And your company is its subsidiary.”
The phone slipped from Jessica’s hand and fell noisily onto the floor.
“Impossible,” she whispered.
“You never asked,” I told her.
Tom shook his head.
“My father left this company to me.”
“My father left me the holding. You only worked in it.”
The ticking of the clock sounded in the room. Tom sank into a chair, while Jessica leaned against the wall.
“All this is fake,” Tom said.
Arthur placed the phone on the table. The recording began. Tom’s voice sounded: “Rachel will sign for me. She does not even know what she owns. When we get to London, everything will be transferred to me.”
Tom heard his own voice and his face turned gray.
“This is illegal!”
“The recording is from the company’s security system,” Arthur replied. “It can be used in court.”
I thought the truth would end everything. But just then the telephone rang.
On the other side was the woman’s voice who had called me a little earlier.
“Rachel, now you must know,” she said. “Tom has found your son and intends to use him tonight…”
