Part 4 — On My Ranch They Were Cutting an Unauthorized Road Until One Morning a Woman Who Came to the Water’s Edge Lost Color

The contract was found in Daily’s office, but I was able to see it only the next morning.

Sheriff Lawson called me at six in the morning.

“Colt, come to town. Urgently.”

“Where is Daily?”

“We do not know yet.”

“The contract?”

“That is exactly what I need to talk to you about.”

When I arrived at the small town courthouse, Trent was already waiting for me in the corridor. He was holding a black folder.

“This is a preliminary purchase agreement,” he told me. “Daily was supposed to buy part of your land with money that he did not yet have.”

“From whom?”

Trent handed me the paper.

“From Hartley’s company.”

Below it was a forged signature in my name.

For several seconds I said nothing.

“This signature is mine,” I said at last, “but I did not write it.”

“I know. A handwriting expert is on the way.”

Temi stood at the end of the courthouse corridor. She no longer looked like the confident woman of yesterday. Her hair was disheveled, she held her glasses in her hand, and she kept fidgeting with their frame with her fingers.

“Where is my husband?” she asked me.

“Should I be asking you?”

“He told me that he had everything under control.”

“He has not for a long time.”

Temi took a step toward me.

“You are destroying all of this. Houses, families, people’s lives.”

“No, Temi. I am only standing on my land.”

“If Daily leaves, all of us will perish.”

“He has already left. And you can still tell the truth.”

She shook her head.

“You will not understand.”

“Then explain it to me.”

For the first time Temi smiled quietly, but the smile immediately disappeared.

“Daily told me that the road meant nothing to him. He said that your ranch belonged to the old world and would be sold soon anyway. Then the money came in. I only had to convince people that you were a danger.”

“And the threats?”

She looked away.

“Daily said that you would become afraid.”

At that moment the sheriff entered.

!!!  Neun Monate schwanger sah ich am Heiligabend meinen Mann am Strand mit einer anderen Frau – dann verschwand sein Lächeln

“Temi Fullerton, your husband was arrested north of town. He had a computer, documents, and records of additional payments in his vehicle.”

Temi’s hand fell.

“What does arrested mean?”

“The investigation is continuing. You must also come for questioning.”

She turned toward me.

“Colt, tell them that I did not know about everything.”

“I do not know what you knew either.”

“You can help me.”

“This time I cannot help you.”

I said these words calmly, but inside it felt as if an old knot had come undone. For all those months I had thought that I wanted to destroy Temi. In reality I only wanted her to feel at least once what it means when others use your life for their own benefit.

At noon the sheriff brought me a recording taken from Daily’s truck. The vehicle’s camera had been turned on.

In the video Daily’s voice could be heard.

“Cut the wire today. Colt will get angry, and then he will agree to open the road.”

The second man asked:

“What if he does not agree?”

“Then we will frighten his daughter. People already believe that this man is dangerous.”

I watched the screen and could not believe my own ears. Ellie was standing beside me. Her face was like stone.

“Turn it off, Dad.”

The sheriff stopped the video.

“I am sorry that you had to hear this.”

Ellie turned toward me.

“Dad, did you know?”

“I knew they were frightening us. I did not know they were planning it so directly.”

She took my hand.

“Let us go home now.”

That evening our house was strangely quiet. The old papers still lay on the kitchen table. The wall clock clicked loudly every minute. I gave the threat messages received from Daily to the investigation, while Temi no longer wanted to speak without a lawyer.

Her lawyer announced the next day:

“My client is no longer continuing to demand the public road.”

But the case did not end with that.

The county commission suspended Daily’s authority. A financial inspection of Hartley’s company began. Temi was removed from the chairmanship of the settlement. At a special vote the neighbors elected Gail Pemberton.

!!!  Eu carregava um anel para pedir outra mulher em casamento quando encontrei minha ex com três crianças, e o sorriso dela desapareceu

Gail managed to come to me a week later.

“I am sorry I did not speak to you earlier,” she told me.

“You spoke in the end.”

“I was afraid that he would make me lose my house.”

“Temi controlled people precisely with this fear.”

Gail was holding a small folder in her hand.

“These are the settlement tax records. Additional fees that she imposed alone.”

Trent took the documents.

“This case is even bigger than we thought.”

All I wanted was for no one to enter my land anymore.

But the truth had already gone much farther.

Several months later the court established that the road had never been a legal exit through my land. Fines and compensation were imposed against Temi. A criminal case was opened against Daily for threats, fraud, deliberate damage, and illegal dumping of waste. Hartley’s company paid the costs of building the second road.

I did not rejoice at a single hearing.

When a person sees the consequences of their own decisions for the first time, their humiliation does not look like victory. It looks more like a heavy door that finally closes by itself.

The eastern road was completed in seven months. It was built outside my boundary and connected the settlement directly to the highway.

On the first morning when vehicles began moving along the new road, I took coffee to the western fence. The wire was new again. There were no cuts. No white vehicle. No tracks of unfamiliar tires.

Ellie stood beside me.

“It is a strange silence.”

“There was always silence here before.”

“I forgot.”

These words proved more painful than any court document.

Then we both went down to Cypress Creek. Water stood calmly in the lowland. Frogs were making noise, crickets were hiding in the grass, and a white heron stood silently on the surface.

Ellie and I built a second cedar bench. Exactly like Sara’s bench: with wide armrests, a backrest tilted slightly backward, and a small copper plate on the left leg.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich öffnete nur die Tür zum Vorratsraum, doch als sie ihren Rücken zeigte, verlor der Oberst plötzlich jede Farbe

Ellie was fastening the last screw.

“Would Mother be angry that we copied her bench?”

“She would be angry that it took us four years.”

Ellie smiled.

“That is true.”

Several weeks later Temi sent me a letter. It contained only one sentence: “Can you speak to me at least once?”

I held the paper in my hand for a long time. Then I handed it over at Trent’s office as the last document in the case.

I did not send an answer.

Not because I hated her.

Simply, saving her was no longer my responsibility.

On the first morning of winter Ellie went to school. I went down to the creek. I hung Sara’s old whistle by the water, which had lain on the windowsill at home for years. The wind gently moved it, and a thin, almost imperceptible sound was heard.

I sat on the second bench.

No one sat on the first one anymore.

But for the first time this emptiness no longer hurt me.

The water carried the road away.

And left me peace.

Missed the beginning?
