My Husband Stole Christmas from the Family and Announced a Trip to Tokyo with a Lie, but After My Response the Smile Disappeared from His Face

On Christmas morning my husband said goodbye to our two-year-old son and promised to call us from Tokyo, while I knew exactly that he was going to another woman.

Harrison clung to his leg. His pajamas covered with green dinosaurs touched the floor, while the lights under the Christmas tree blinked.

“Daddy, don’t go.”

Julian let go of the suitcase and crouched in front of the child.

“I won’t stay long, little man.”

“It’s Christmas.”

“I know. Forgive me.”

Then he kissed his forehead and calmly said the lie, as if these words had no weight at all.

“Daddy will call you from Japan.”

I stood three steps away from him, holding Julian’s black leather gloves. His perfume had remained inside the glove, but at that moment the scent seemed foreign to me for the first time.

Tokyo was only a story. An eight-day business gathering, Singaporean managers, London representatives, and all the answers prepared in advance.

But Julian was not going to Tokyo.

He was going to Aspen, where Isabelle was waiting.

Three weeks earlier, his phone screen had lit up by accident while I was folding Harrison’s pajamas.

“I am still thinking about what was said in the elevator.”

Then another message appeared.

“I deleted the pictures. Calm down.”

I knew the password. I could have read everything, but I knew Julian. Two messages would turn into a misunderstanding, and my suspicion into the main problem. In the end I would again have to explain why I had noticed what my husband was hiding.

So that day I said nothing.

Now he looked at me.

“You forgot the gloves.”

“Thank you, Elena.”

“Have a safe trip.”

He kissed my forehead.

“I am really sorry.”

I almost laughed. He was sorry that he had to leave. He was sorry that he had to play the game. But he was not sorry enough to tell the truth.

When the car disappeared beyond the trees, Harrison waved at me.

“Is Daddy in Japan?”

“Yes, darling.”

The lie caught in my throat, but on Christmas morning I did not want to shatter the father’s face for the child.

Not yet.

That same minute I called Rebecca Shaw, the lawyer handling my mother’s estate. My voice was trembling.

“Rebecca, I need help.”

“What happened?”

I looked through the window at Harrison, who was driving around a red plastic truck.

“I think my husband is cheating on me.”

Rebecca did not scream and did not reassure me. She only asked me questions: about the house, bank accounts, my mother’s estate, the documents, and whether Julian had ever made me sign something.

I felt a strange coldness.

“I want not to be at home when he returns.”

Silence fell over the phone for several seconds.

Then Rebecca said quietly:

“Do not leave yet. Until we know exactly what Julian is trying to hide, you cannot leave the house.”

That evening, when Harrison fell asleep under the Christmas tree, I entered Julian’s office. The safe code was our son’s birthday.

Inside I found passports, property documents, and a blue folder bearing my mother’s name.

On the very first page I saw a transfer of four hundred eighty thousand dollars. The money had gone from my personal account to an unknown company.

Julian’s signature was on the second document. Beside it was mine.

I had never written it.

I photographed the papers and sent them to Rebecca.

She called me immediately.

“Elena, touch nothing and do not confront Julian.”

“Why?”

“Because this is no longer only betrayal.”

At that moment a soft chime sounded in the hallway. The security system announced that someone had entered from the garage.

I locked the safe.

Julian’s suitcase stood by the kitchen door.

Then a woman appeared. She was wearing a dark coat, drops of snow lay in her hair, and her face bore such fear as a real lover would not have.

Isabelle.

“You think Julian and I are together,” she said in a whisper.

“Isn’t that so?”

Her face went pale.

“No. I was helping him hide something.”

She took a small memory device from her bag and placed it on the table.

My phone rang.

Julian’s name appeared on the screen.

Isabelle grabbed my hand.

“Don’t answer.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the door and said quietly:

“Julian is not in Aspen. He is returning home.”

At that moment the floor creaked upstairs, while Julian’s second key was already turning in the safe’s lock…

Isabelle put a finger to her lips and brought me into the kitchen cabinet. Harrison was sleeping upstairs. Julian’s steps could be heard by the stairs.

“What is this?” I showed her the memory device.

“His conversation. Everything was recorded.”

“Why were you helping me?”

Isabelle lowered her eyes.

“Julian ruined my brother’s job. Then he told me that if I did not follow his instructions, he would send my brother to prison. I was only moving documents.”

The door handle moved.

I called Rebecca, but made no sound. She immediately understood my breathing.

!!!  They turned my parents into guests in their own home, but when my brother learned I had returned, the color drained from his face

“Stay quiet and do not lose the device,” she told me.

Julian entered the room. Snow was melting on his coat, and in his hand he held my mother’s folder.

“Elena?” he called.

Isabelle looked toward me.

“If you come out now, he will take everything from you.”

From the darkness of the cabinet I watched Julian take his phone and call someone.

“The documents are no longer at home,” he said. “But Elena will sign everything soon.”

My knees gave way.

I remembered Rebecca’s words: this was no longer only betrayal.

Julian looked toward the stairs.

“Where is the child?”

Isabelle squeezed my hand more tightly.

This time I knew the answer. I had to leave the room, but first I had to understand what the recording was hiding…

Isabelle opened the cabinet door slightly and led me behind her, through the back entrance, into the small kitchen pantry. An old refrigerator hummed there, and the shelves smelled of cinnamon and oranges. Rebecca quietly told me on the phone that the police were already on their way.

Julian entered the office. After several seconds his voice was heard.

“Elena, I know you are home.”

His steps slowly approached.

Isabelle put the memory device into my hand.

“Now you have to listen.”

Following Rebecca’s instructions, I connected the device to the phone. The recording started immediately.

It was Julian’s voice.

“Elena’s mother’s estate cannot remain in her account for long. After giving birth she will sign everything.”

Then Isabelle’s frightened voice was heard.

“She knows nothing. This is a crime.”

“This is a family matter,” Julian replied. “I run the company and I return the money too. If she resists me, I will take the child and say that she is psychologically unstable.”

My breath caught. I leaned against the wall, because suddenly I could no longer feel my legs.

In the recording Julian said one more thing.

“Four hundred eighty thousand is only the beginning. The remaining estate will also go into my company when I obtain the new signature.”

The recording ended.

Such silence fell over the room, as if the whole city outside had disappeared.

“I did not hear this,” I said.

“Because you wanted to believe him,” Isabelle replied. “As I wanted to save my brother.”

At that moment Julian appeared in the doorway. In his hand he held a small iron box.

“It is very sad, Elena,” he said. “You have always been overly emotional.”

!!!  Part 4 — In the New House, My Mother-in-Law Demanded My Bedroom, but When the Moving Truck Filled the Yard, the Smile Disappeared from Her Face

“You stole my money.”

“It was our money.”

“You forged my signature.”

A smile appeared on his face.

“You cannot prove that.”

Rebecca’s voice came from the phone, because I had deliberately left the call open.

“She has already proved it. I heard the recording live.”

Julian jumped.

“Rebecca, this is a private conversation.”

“No, Julian. This is evidence.”

The sound of car brakes was heard in the yard. Then a loud knock came at the door.

Julian rushed to the window.

“The police?”

“Not only the police,” I said.

Rebecca sent me a document. My mother’s will contained a clause whose existence Julian had not known: the estate belonged only to me and my child, and the spouse had no authority to manage it.

Julian’s face turned gray.

“Why did you not tell me this?”

“Because I thought you were my husband.”

They knocked on the door once more.

Rebecca added in a whisper:

“Elena, now you must know the worst. Part of this money has already been transferred to another account. And the account is not in Julian’s name…”

I was still hearing her words when a message arrived on my phone from an unknown number. The photograph showed Harrison’s bedroom, taken that same night.

Below it was written only one sentence: “If you want to leave the house alive, come alone”…
