My Father Humiliated Me at the Military Academy Gate, but When an Unknown Voice Was Heard, the Smile Disappeared from His Face

My father pushed me so hard in front of the military academy hall that I could barely keep my balance on the frozen concrete. Rain struck my face, my ceremonial uniform clung to my body, and the marks of his fingers burned on my arm.

“You cannot enter here, Clara,” he hissed through his teeth. “Today you will no longer disgrace our family.”

I had been preparing for this day for four years. I broke every physical record at the academy, passed the tactical examinations with the highest scores, and became the best cadet in the course. That evening I was supposed to receive the highest military honor. And now my father was holding me as if I were a stray dog found in the street.

He tightened his grip on my wrist. My knees buckled from the pain.

“You are only an ordinary soldier,” he told me. “Know your place.”

Under the wooden canopy stood my stepmother Diane and her daughter Haley. In Haley’s hand glittered my golden pass—the special pass intended for the family of the best cadet. A few minutes earlier it had been in my pocket. Now Haley was playing with it between her fingers and smiling with satisfaction.

“Meeting the generals and politicians is necessary for Haley’s internship,” Diane said coldly. “And you will return to the barracks and keep quiet.”

“It is my pass,” I barely said. “My name is on it.”

Haley brought the pass close to her eyes.

“A name is easily changed, Clara. Especially when no one trusts you.”

My father pushed me again. This time I fell straight into a deep puddle. Cold water rose to my knees, and my heavy boots sank into the mud. The oak door of the hall slammed shut noisily and muffled the sound of the music inside.

For several seconds I stood motionless. My arm hurt, water dripped from my uniform, but what troubled me most was that I no longer appeared in my father’s eyes at all. It was as if four years, all the sweat I had shed, and the nights when I had not allowed myself to give up had been erased in a single moment.

I took one step toward the barracks.

I immediately realized that if I left, they would win. But where was I supposed to find the strength? In my bag there were only soaked gloves and a small copper whistle. My grandfather had given me this whistle on the first day he brought me to the academy. It had three small notches on it—one for each of his military missions. I touched it with my fingers and quietly told myself: it is not over yet.

!!!  Part 4 — On My Very First Day at Work, the Director Humiliated Me, but When I Pointed Out His Mistake, He Suddenly Stopped Very Close to Me

All my life I had believed that one day I would make my father proud. That evening I thought for the first time that he was not afraid of my success, but of what my success would reveal.

A low, stern voice came from beneath the academy’s arches.

“Let her go.”

My father froze. Diane held her breath. The golden pass almost slipped from Haley’s hand.

I slowly turned, because I knew that voice. Every cadet knew it.

A tall shadow moved in the darkened archway and came toward me. In his hand was a black folder, with the academy seal visible on its corner. He looked at my father, then at my wet uniform, and finally at the red mark on my wrist.

“Colonel,” he said, “before this door is closed once again, you had better open this folder…”

The colonel did not touch my father, but his single step was enough. My father released my wrist.

“This is a family matter,” he said.

“No,” the colonel replied. “When the academy’s best cadet is being forcibly stopped, this is already a military matter.”

He held out a small towel toward me. I took it, although my hands were shaking so badly that I could barely hold it.

“Colonel Valentin, please do not complicate things,” Diane said with a smile.

“I am not complicating anything. I am simply reading what is written here.”

He opened the folder. The color slowly drained from my father’s face.

Haley took a step back.

“This is impossible,” she whispered.

“What is impossible?” I asked.

The colonel first looked at my father, then at me.

“Three official records have been made under your name this evening. In all three, the story is different from the others.”

My father immediately shouted:

“This girl has emotional problems! She does not understand what she is doing!”

The colonel closed the folder.

“That is why I came personally. In ten minutes we will meet in the commandant’s office. The security officer will be there too.”

Diane placed a hand on Haley’s shoulder.

“Clara, if you behave intelligently now, everything will remain within the family.”

For the first time I was no longer afraid of her threat.

“Everything is already no longer within the family,” I told her.

The colonel pressed the black folder to his chest. I saw such seriousness in his eyes that I realized the matter was not only about my humiliation.

When the door of the commandant’s office opened, there was one item on the table that should never have been there……

It was seven o’clock in the evening in the commandant’s office. The wall clock counted the seconds noisily, while water from my boots gathered into a small puddle on the wet floor. Colonel Valentin, the security officer, my father, Diane, Haley, and I were sitting in the room.

In the middle of the table lay a small memory device and printouts from the security cameras. Beside them lay the item that should never have been there—my personal academy file, sealed with a red stamp.

My father immediately stood up.

“This is illegal. Such a matter cannot be discussed in front of family members.”

“You yourself requested the presence of family members,” the officer replied calmly. “You stated that Clara had stolen the academy pass this evening and had tried to enter the ceremony.”

I looked at my father.

“Did you write that?”

He avoided my eyes.

“I only told them the truth.”

The colonel turned on the device. First the sound of rain was heard in the room, then my father’s voice, clear and cold.

“No one should enter the hall in her name. If she resists us, say that she is psychologically unstable.”

Haley’s face froze.

“I did not say that,” she said quickly.

Her laughter was heard in the recording.

“Dad, just give me her pass. I will look more worthy in front of the generals.”

Diane lowered her eyes. My father collapsed into the chair.

“This recording is edited,” he roared. “Clara arranged all of this!”

The officer picked up the second document.

“Then explain why four pages of her evaluation were changed with your signature? Why were her highest scores erased, and why was ‘disciplinary violation’ written instead?”

I looked at the documents. Beside my signature stood my father’s signature, although he had never been my commander and had no right to sign such records.

“You tried to erase my career,” I told him.

“I wanted to protect you,” he said quietly.

“No. You wanted no one to see how I earned what your daughter never deserved.”

!!!  My Father Turned My Military Service into a Joke, but One Word from the General Wiped the Smile from His Face

At last the colonel opened the sealed folder.

“Clara, your complete military evaluation is valid. You are the best cadet in the course. It is also confirmed that you did not lose the pass. It was taken from you by force.”

Haley began to cry.

“Dad, tell me you did not know about any of this.”

My father could not answer.

At that moment the telephone rang. The colonel answered the call and whispered a few words. Then he looked directly at me.

“Clara, this is no longer only an internal academy matter. The city prosecutor’s office has requested all records, because several years ago funds from a military fund were also transferred under your name.”

My father suddenly jumped up.

“No one has the right to dig through my accounts!”

The colonel placed the phone on the table.

“That is exactly what they were calling about. And they do not yet know that we found one more recording in the camera archive.”

Silence fell in the hall. A time stamp appeared on the screen: four years ago, the day I enrolled in the academy. My father stared at the screen, and for the first time I realized that his greatest fear had begun that night……
