Part 4 — My mother-in-law took me to the hospital, but my husband demanded that I apologize — he turned pale for the first time at my answer

My name was written there, but the signature was not mine.

For one moment no one moved.

Then Irakli took the sheet in his hand and went to the window to examine it in the light.

“This signature is forged,” he said. “But the document was created with your identity details.”

Luka immediately reached for his phone.

“I need to call Mother.”

“Call your lawyer first,” Salome told him.

“You are my lawyer.”

Salome shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

Her calm voice frightened Luka more than the police warrant.

“What does ‘not anymore’ mean?”

“It means that from this minute Ana Meladze is my client. You will take care of your own defense.”

Luka took a step toward me.

“Ana, I swear I did not do this.”

“Maybe not,” I answered. “But whoever did it entered your system. And you created that system.”

Irakli blocked Luka’s path.

“You will not leave here until you answer our questions.”

That same day everything began moving at once.

The bank temporarily blocked their accounts.

The company employees called one after another and said that for years they had signed fake invoices because Wendy threatened them.

The suppliers admitted for the first time that such companies did not exist at all.

Luka called me three times.

The first time he was shouting.

“You destroyed my family!”

The second time he was crying.

“Just tell me how to fix this.”

The third time he was silent. I heard only his breathing.

“Luka,” I told him, “you already knew this day would come.”

“I did not know you would leave me too.”

“I did not leave you. You left me in that kitchen when you chose your mother’s side.”

I ended the call.

Two days later investigator Beridze asked me to attend a confrontation with Wendy. There was a camera in the small room. On the table lay a plastic cup of water and a recording device.

Wendy entered in handcuffs, but she still kept the same arrogance in her walk.

“You did all this,” she told me.

“No. I only left the evidence where you could no longer hide it.”

!!!  Mama mi-a rupt invitația la filmare și a cerut să plătesc tot weekendul, dar mesajul ei l-a făcut pe tata să încremenească

“Luka cannot live without me.”

“He is an adult.”

“You are turning everyone against him.”

“I am only making him listen to his own words.”

Beridze turned on the recorder.

The recording from my apartment sounded in the room. Wendy’s voice was clear, cold, and convincing.

“If you do not sign everything now, I will convince Luka that you used us for money.”

Then Luka’s voice.

“Mother, maybe it is enough.”

“No. If you back down now, you will lose everything.”

“Ana will not forgive you for this.”

“She will have no choice.”

Wendy froze.

She heard her own words and realized for the first time that there was no longer a person in the room whom she could frighten. Her voice was now working against her.

“Turn it off,” she said.

“Why?” I asked. “Are you hearing yourself for the first time?”

Her face tightened.

“You took my son away from me.”

“No. I simply no longer stayed beside him when he chose to stay beside you.”

That same evening Luka tried to come to the house in his own car. He found the door locked. The security officer told him that, by temporary court order, he no longer had the right to enter the apartment.

He stood at the door for a long time.

I could see him from the window of our living room. He was holding my old blue bag, which had accidentally remained behind when I left.

I did not go downstairs.

That night, for the first time, I saw how empty our apartment was. A wedding photograph hung on the wall, but my smile in the picture seemed strange to me. Neither the key nor the envelope lay on the dining table anymore. Only a thin strip of dust remained where they had been.

The ceramic elephant spoon, however, was in my suitcase.

Several weeks later I left the city.

Instead of the noise of Tbilisi, I moved to a small seaside town where the engines of fishermen’s boats could be heard in the mornings and the shopkeepers knew one another by name.

!!!  Ich beschuldigte meine schwangere Reinigungskraft des Diebstahls, doch als sie die Tür dieses verlassenen Hauses öffnete, wurde mein Gesicht bleich

Salome found me a job at a small consulting company. I was still doing financial audits, but now my decisions were no longer governed by other people’s fear.

On the first day a new notebook was waiting on my desk. Dark green leaves were drawn on its cover. An employee told me it had been given to me as a sign of success.

I thanked her and sat down by the window.

In the evenings I walked along the shore. My rib still hurt, but it no longer reminded me only of that night. It reminded me that the body can survive when the mind finally chooses the truth.

Three months later the court opened a case against Wendy. Her property and the company shares were frozen until the investigation ended. Luka denied the crime at first, then reached an agreement and admitted that he knew about the transfers.

I did not sit against him in the courtroom.

I stood there to defend myself.

When the judge asked me why I had decided to file the statement, I was silent for several seconds.

“Because everyone in that house thought my silence was their safety,” I said. “In reality, my silence gave them power.”

Luka sat at the other end of the courtroom. I looked directly at him for the first time since then.

He looked very tired.

And for the first time I no longer felt the desire to explain anything to him.

Six months later, a new life could already be seen in ordinary details in my small apartment.

A pot of basil stood by the kitchen window.

Every morning I made coffee and wrote three tasks for the day in my notebook.

On Saturdays, my neighbor’s six-year-old daughter, Nia, came to me and drew. Once she drew a house on a sheet of paper, with large windows and an open door.

“Is this your house?” I asked.

“No,” she answered. “It is a house where nobody is afraid.”

I attached the sheet to the refrigerator.

That evening I received a message from Luka.

“My lawyer says that the agreement may be canceled if you change your statement. I am not asking you for anything, only talk to me once.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Encontré a mi hermano escayolado y atado en el porche, pero cuando exigí sus muletas, mi tía dejó de sonreír

A second message followed immediately.

“Mother no longer speaks to me. You are the only person I have left.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

In the past I would have called him immediately. I considered his pain my own responsibility. I would have tried to arrange everything and find an excuse for everyone.

Now I wrote only one answer.

“Your loneliness is no longer my responsibility. Please do not contact me again.”

I deleted his number.

I went to the window.

The first snow was falling. White flakes whirled around the street lamps and fell silently onto the paving stones.

I took the small ceramic elephant spoon out of my suitcase. Its handle was slightly broken, but I carefully washed it and put it on the kitchen shelf.

It was no longer merely an object I had brought from that night.

It reminded me that everything had shattered, but not me.

The light of the snow was reflected in the spoon my mother had given me.

And this time no one was waiting for me at home before whom I had to choose silence.

Only I was at home.

And that was enough.

Missed the beginning?
