Part 4 — The Meat My Mother Sent Was Being Saved by My Husband for His Mother-in-Law, but When He Opened the Refrigerator, His Face Suddenly Turned Pale

“Who is with Raul in the footage?” I asked.

Davit’s voice was calm, but such firmness could be felt in his calm that I understood: this was no longer an ordinary family quarrel.

“A bank intermediary,” he answered. “And your mother’s former accountant. Both are visible on camera. They knew the document was forged.”

Raul raised his head.

“That is impossible.”

“The footage exists,” I said.

“Mariana, listen to me. I was simply looking for a solution.”

“You were looking for a solution on my mother’s land.”

“The company was almost saved.”

“And if it had not been saved?”

Raul could not answer.

Davit continued speaking on the phone.

“Mrs. Mariana, your mother has already filed a request to suspend the loan. An examination of the documents has been ordered. I will come to you tomorrow morning, and you will sign the statement.”

“All right.”

“One more thing. The apartment rental agreement is only in your name. Raul no longer has the right to remain there unless you agree.”

Raul immediately looked at me.

“You will not do this.”

I still held the phone.

“I already did. You simply did not know yet.”

He looked at his mother.

“Mother, tell her that this cannot be done.”

But my mother-in-law looked away. A few hours earlier she had been the woman who considered my refrigerator her own pantry. Now she clutched the bag handle as if it were the last thing left in her hands.

“Raul, you told me Mariana knew,” Sara said. “You told me all the signatures were genuine.”

“Sara, be quiet.”

“No. I have been quiet long enough.”

Raul turned toward me.

“You also benefited from that money, didn’t you?”

“Which money?”

“The house, the car, the wedding. Everything was ours.”

“Everything you spent relied on my salary and my mother’s money. And you hid debts.”

“I was fighting beside you.”

“No. You were hiding behind my back.”

At that moment my mother-in-law took a small recorder from her bag. It was so old that the plastic on its side was scratched.

“Did you want this?” she asked me.

Raul turned pale.

“Mother, no.”

“You told me to hide it if something happened. You told me this recording would protect us.”

I looked at the recorder.

“What is it?”

My mother-in-law pressed the button.

At first there was only the sound of dishes. Then Raul’s voice was heard, older and more confident.

“Mariana will not leave the house. She thinks family forgives everything.”

My mother-in-law laughed.

“That is why we give her little gifts. Then when we take something, she will not complain.”

Then Raul said:

“We should do the same to her mother. First ask, then take. If she resists, Mariana herself will persuade her.”

The recording ended.

This time Sara broke the silence.

“Was all this happening in front of me?”

My mother-in-law pressed her lips together.

“You understood nothing.”

“I understood, but I did not want to believe it.”

!!!  Compré una casa para mis padres, pero mi cuñada los arrinconó durante su fiesta y dejó de sonreír cuando saqué una carpeta

Raul walked toward the door, but I stepped in front of him.

“You will not stay here tonight.”

“Where should I go?”

He asked it as if I were still his rescuer.

Earlier I would probably have tensed, packed his bag, and told him to stay at least for the night. This time I only stepped aside.

“Wherever you want.”

He reached a hand toward me.

“Mariana, please.”

“Do not touch me.”

My mother-in-law began to say something, but there was a loud knock at the door. Davit stood there with two investigators. In their hands they held a court order and permission to seize documents.

Raul took a step back.

“You called the police?”

“No,” I said. “My mother called the truth.”

That night I saw for the first time how a person empties of his own confidence. The investigators removed folders from his study. Inside one folder they found a copy of my identity document, the valuation of my mother’s land, and three more documents on which my signature had been imitated.

Raul insistently repeated that everything was a misunderstanding.

“I am not going to prison,” he whispered.

Davit answered calmly:

“That must be decided by your decisions, not by your wife.”

Raul realized for the first time that nobody was standing on his side.

Several hours later he finally left the apartment. He stopped on the threshold and looked back. On the kitchen table there still lay the empty paper bag in which I had brought my mother’s bacon.

“You regret this,” he said.

“No.”

“Everything will collapse for us.”

“For me, it had already collapsed. I have simply now come out of the ruins.”

I closed the door.

The next morning the lawyer came. He spread all the documents across the table. The signatures were sent for examination, the bank suspended the loan, and the intermediary seen in the recording gave testimony. My mother’s land was protected.

Raul called me several times that same day.

The first time he was angry.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

The second time he was crying.

“Give me one chance.”

The third time his lawyer called me.

“Madam, my client is ready to explain everything to you.”

“There is no need anymore,” I said.

“Perhaps an agreement would be better for both sides.”

“You should have offered an agreement before forging my signature.”

That same week Raul was prohibited from coming home until the trial. My mother-in-law left the city. A few days later Sara came to me alone.

It was five in the evening. Snow was beginning outside. She stood at the door holding a small cardboard box.

“I brought this for you,” she said.

“What is it?”

“My letters. The ones I received from Raul. They say that I knew everything. I want you to have them.”

I did not take the box.

“Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because for the first time I want to tell the truth to someone whom my silence will no longer harm.”

!!!  4. RÉSZ — A születésnapi hétvégémre senki nem jött el, aztán amikor leállítottam a támogatásokat, anyám arca megváltozott

Sara lowered her head.

“My mother always said that family is the place where you can take someone else’s things and then ask for forgiveness. Now I understand that this is not family.”

I opened the door wider.

“You have a choice too.”

“Will you forgive me?”

“Maybe. But that does not mean you will occupy the same place in my life again.”

She nodded and left.

That evening I gathered Raul’s things in the bedroom. The empty room looked strangely large. The shadow of our wedding photograph remained on the wall because I had taken the photograph down and only a small nail remained.

His brown bag was no longer in the closet.

His shoes were no longer by the door.

But on the upper kitchen shelf there was still the small copper clip shaped like a pig, which my mother had hidden in the box. I picked it up and looked at it for a long time. My mother had bought this clip years ago at a market because she told me that even small things can hold large papers together.

That night I called my mother.

“Mother, when did you find all this out?”

“When you told me that Raul gave you the tax paper to sign,” she replied. “A mother may become tired, but she still notices fear in her child’s eyes.”

“Why did you not tell me immediately?”

“Because first you had to see it yourself. If I did everything instead of you, you would again wait for someone else to protect your life.”

I cried for a long time at these words.

Not because I had lost my husband.

Because I realized how long I had been losing myself.

Three weeks later the first hearing took place in court. I did not go into the details of the proceedings. The lawyer presented all the recordings. Raul still tried to say that he had done everything out of love, that he had taken the debts for our shared future, that I was his wife and therefore my property should also be shared.

But then Davit played the audio recording.

Raul heard his own voice.

“Mariana will not find out anything until we have the money in our hands.”

He lowered his head in the courtroom.

And for the first time I understood that a person can become lost in his own words.

In several months the loan was canceled, the forged documents were declared invalid, and the investigation charged Raul and the intermediary. My mother-in-law made an agreement and partially admitted responsibility. Raul was not sentenced to prison that same day, but conditional restrictions and strict court supervision were imposed on him. Until the final verdict, he remained between his decisions and his own words.

I moved to a small town, closer to my mother.

I found a job in the old library. In the mornings I arranged books, at noon I read to children, and in the evenings I helped my mother in the garden. I no longer had a reason to explain to anyone why I did not want to share something.

!!!  At my wedding they mocked me because I wore a military uniform, but the silence in the chapel suddenly erased Vanessa’s smile

My kitchen was small, but I decided myself what would stand on every shelf.

In summer my mother raised a new pig. This time we prepared the meat together. When we opened the first package, the same smell spread again—smoke, salt, and wood.

My mother stood beside me and laughed.

“Where will you keep it this time?” she asked.

“Wherever I decide.”

My little nephew Luka entered through the kitchen door, holding pencils. He had drawn a house, two people, and a large sun. In the corner of the picture he had also drawn a little pig.

“This is your guard,” he told me.

I laughed.

“My guard?”

“Yes. It will no longer let anyone take your things.”

Several days later I received the last message from Raul.

“Mariana, I know I did everything badly. After the trial I became another person. Mother no longer speaks to me, and Sara blocked me too. I want us to meet at least once. Without you I have nothing.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Earlier I would probably have called immediately. I would have asked whether he had eaten, where he slept, and how he was. I would again have tried to assemble the fragments of his life.

But now I wrote only one reply.

“I hope that someday you will be able to live without needing to break other people’s boundaries. Returning to me is no longer your path.”

I sent the message and put the phone aside.

That evening the first snow fell.

My mother closed the kitchen window. I took the small copper clip and attached it to the refrigerator door, and hung Luka’s drawing on it.

The little pig’s head shone in the light.

Bacon was stored in the refrigerator.

But this time there was not only meat there.

There was my choice.

And for the first time in my house, everything truly belonged to me.

I touched the clip with my finger.

This time I closed the door myself.

Missed the beginning?
