Part 4 — When My Wife Announced She Was Going on a Date with Another Man, Her Smile Disappeared After My Calm Response

Sam hung up the phone and looked toward the door. Heavy footsteps could be heard in the corridor. Kyle stepped back, while Emily squeezed the little moon hanging from her bag so tightly that its edge cut into her skin.

“You did this?” I asked.

“James, I only asked for protection.”

“It says that danger comes from you.”

“The lawyer told me it would work faster this way.”

“The lawyer or Kyle?”

Emily lost her voice.

The door opened. Two investigators entered. Behind them stood a family-law specialist holding a transparent folder.

“Kyle Morgan?” one of them asked.

Kyle managed to swallow only on the second attempt.

“Yes.”

“We need to speak with you for a few minutes.”

“My lawyer will come.”

“He is already on his way.”

Kyle took out his phone, dialed a number, and almost shouted:

“Come here! Now!”

A few seconds later his face changed.

“What do you mean, you no longer represent me?”

He went to the corner of the room, but everyone could hear his voice.

“I told you this was only a family dispute… no, you cannot refuse me now… you knew about the transfers!”

Sam did not look toward me. He only lowered his head. Kyle’s lawyer had understood before Kyle himself what he still did not: the case had already slipped out of his control.

Emily sat down on the chair.

“James, please, do not take the children away.”

“I will not take them anywhere. They will stay with me, as they have until now.”

“I am their mother.”

“And I am their father. The difference is that I have never used their fear for my own purpose.”

Sam turned on the computer. The same video appeared on the screen again. This time the sound was clearer. Emily’s words rang through the room.

“James is not going to leave the house. He cannot abandon the children. If necessary, I will say that he threatened me.”

Emily watched her own face on the screen. That woman was sitting calmly in Kyle’s car, as if arranging someone else’s life.

Kyle stopped.

His face was visible in the black reflection of the window.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Apagué el teléfono para pasar la Nochebuena con otra mujer, pero al encenderlo mi esposa había desaparecido y Tiffany dejó de sonreír

“I did not say that,” he whispered.

Sam raised his voice slightly.

“You did. We all heard it.”

Kyle heard his own voice again in the recording. For the first time he realized that his words no longer belonged to the moment in which he had spoken them. They were evidence now.

The investigator put handcuffs on him. I looked away. I was not happy. The person who was supposed to destroy my family had still once been someone else’s child.

The case against Emily did not end immediately. The court imposed a temporary restriction on her, and meetings with the children were set to take place under supervision. The next day she called me several times.

I did not answer the first call.

Sam answered the second.

“James cannot speak to you now.”

“I am his wife,” Emily said.

“You canceled that phrase yourself when you prepared a case against him together with someone else.”

Emily hung up immediately.

That evening I entered the house alone. Photos of our family hung on the hallway wall. In one photo Jack was laughing with two teeth missing, while Eva was drawing on a rainbow-colored sheet beside him. I took the photos down one by one and moved them into the children’s rooms.

Emily’s closet was half empty. The red dress still hung there. Its lower edge touched the door handle and swayed lightly, as if someone invisible were walking through the room.

And one diamond earring lay on the bed.

The other had been lost that night.

I put the earring in my palm and realized that things often preserve the truth longer than people do. This earring was no longer my love. It was only proof that once I had tried with all my heart.

Three weeks later the first hearing took place in court. The judge listened to the recording, read the document expert’s conclusion, and examined the bank transfers. Emily sat in the courtroom with her hands placed on her knees.

“You claimed that you were afraid of your husband,” the judge told her. “But the presented materials show that you planned a false accusation against him in advance.”

!!!  Me dejaron con sesenta dólares tras mi graduación, pero trece años después mi llegada hizo que mi madre dejara de sonreír

Emily cleared her throat.

“I made bad decisions.”

“A bad decision and deliberate falsification are not the same thing.”

In the end, Emily was not completely deprived of contact with the children, but their place of residence remained with me. The sale of the house was stopped. The loan taken in my name was canceled. Kyle was sentenced to prison for fraud, while Emily received a suspended sentence and mandatory community service.

I did not say that her life should be destroyed.

I simply no longer covered the ruins with my hand.

Four months later we moved to a small town. The house was much smaller, but the river could be seen from the kitchen window in the morning. I began working as an administrator at a local technical college. In the evenings I helped Jack with mathematics, while Eva sat at the table and drew everything with colored pencils.

One evening she handed me a sheet of paper.

“This is our new house,” she told me.

In the drawing, four people stood in front of a small yellow house. One of the figures was holding a silver moon.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“You,” Eva told me. “You protect the moon now.”

I laughed, but my eyes filled with tears.

Jack lifted his head from his book.

“Dad, are you really not going to leave anymore?”

“No.”

“Because of Mom?”

I was silent for a while.

“No. Because of you.”

In the first week of winter, snow came. On the way back from school Eva lost her glove and was angry the entire way. At the corner of the street Jack built a snowman whose nose was made not of a carrot, but of a small piece of wood.

When we returned home, I found a new message on my phone.

“I know it is late. But now I understand everything. Kyle used me. I want to come back to you. The children need a family too.”

A few minutes later a second message arrived.

“Meet me just once. I am not asking you to forget. I am asking you to listen to me.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Man überschüttete mich auf dem teuersten Ball der Stadt mit Rotwein, doch als die Türen aufgingen, verschwand sein Lächeln

I looked at the messages for a long time. Then I put the phone on the table.

There was no need to write a reply to Emily. In the end, Sam taught me that silence is not always weakness. Sometimes silence is closing a door that you should no longer approach.

The next day she wrote to me once more.

“Please.”

I sent her only one sentence.

“You made your choice. Now I am making mine.”

Then I blocked the number.

That evening I opened the closet. Emily’s red dress was no longer there. I gave it to a charity center. Instead of the dress, I attached the children’s drawing to the inside of the door — a small house, a river, and four figures holding one another’s hands.

I put the single diamond earring into a small wooden box. There was no promise in that box now, nor old pain. It was simply an object that reminded me that love can end, but losing yourself is not necessary.

I went to the window. Snow was falling silently on the yard. Jack’s and Eva’s laughter could be heard from the house.

I closed the box.

And this time I left the light on in the house myself.

Missed the beginning?
