My husband told me to stay home, but at the gala one unfamiliar guest suddenly wiped the smile from Blake’s face

That evening my husband went to a charity gala with the woman he loved, while I was assigned to pick up the shards of broken crystal at home.

The last piece of the large bowl lay at my feet. In the kitchen, at seven in the evening, only the ticking of the clock could be heard, and the blood dripping from my fingers fell in red dots onto the white marble. My mother-in-law, Lenette, stood by the sofa and looked at me as though I had to prove once again that I would never be good enough for this family.

“Even after eight years, you still haven’t learned to behave like a woman of the Winslow house?” she sighed.

Blake was looking through his phone. He did not bend down to help even once.

“Clean it up,” he told me. “The service staff has already left.”

I slowly looked up.

“I thought I was going with you today.”

He furrowed his brows, as though my words were ridiculous.

“This evening is not for you.”

“It is our company’s charity event.”

“Investors and influential people from the city will be there. I need someone who will represent the company with dignity.”

Lenette snickered.

“Arranging flowers and setting the table are not representation, Elena.”

For eight years I had swallowed such words. I told myself that patience was maturity, and silence preserved peace in the family. That night I understood for the first time that my silence had become a right for them.

The doorbell rang.

Sloane came in, Blake’s vice president, in a burgundy dress. She was the same woman whose calls made Blake place his phone face down. Sloane smiled at me politely, then slipped her arm through my husband’s.

“The car is waiting for us,” she told him.

“Are you taking her?” I asked Blake.

He came closer.

“Don’t embarrass yourself.”

“I asked you a simple question.”

“Everything you have is thanks to me.”

I looked into his eyes. At that moment something in my heart finally broke.

“Do you really believe that?”

“I know it exactly.”

Sloane’s smile widened.

A few minutes later, from the kitchen window, I saw Blake open the limousine door for Sloane. Before getting in, she kissed him. Without hiding. Directly before my eyes.

The house fell silent.

I went upstairs and entered the study. Behind the bookshelf, beneath a wooden panel, a small safe was hidden. My fingers were still trembling when I entered the code. Inside was one thing Blake had never touched: a small silver elephant-head pendant given to me by my grandfather, inside which a micro-key was hidden.

I slid the key into the lock.

I took a black folder from the safe. Inside were the house deed, company shares, financial agreements, and signatures. My name was on every document.

Eight years earlier, my grandfather’s investment fund had quietly acquired Blake’s company, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. Everything was transferred into a secret holding company. And one person controlled the holding company.

Me.

Blake was going to the gala at that moment to charm a mysterious female billionaire, a woman who could save his future. He did not know that woman was me.

I put on the black dress spread across the bed. I hung the silver elephant pendant around my neck and put the folder in my bag. I went downstairs, but when I opened the door, the head of security was already standing there.

“Mrs. Winslow, the car is ready. However, please sign this…”

He reached toward the folder, and at that very moment the telephone rang in the corridor…

…the telephone rang so loudly that the head of security immediately stopped his hand.

“Who is calling?” I asked.

“The head of security at the gala,” he replied. “He says he must confirm your entry into the hall.”

I picked up the phone.

“Elena Winslow speaking.”

A tense man’s voice sounded on the other end.

“Madam, I apologize. Your name could only be mentioned on the closed list. Mr. Blake is already in the hall and is trying to obtain a meeting with the chairwoman.”

“Then I will give him a meeting.”

I hung up and looked at security.

“Where am I supposed to sign this document?”

“It is a guest security register.”

“Today I am not a guest.”

He fell silent. This time, for the first time, he saw me not as a woman who stayed at home, but as a person whose order he was waiting for.

I got into the car at seven forty-five in the evening. As I settled into the seat, the silver elephant pendant touched the fabric of the dress and made a small, almost imperceptible ringing sound. I remembered that sound from childhood. Grandfather told me that the elephant meant not strength, but memory.

The hotel in the city center glittered with golden lights. Journalists stood at the entrance, cameras flashed. The security employee opened the door for me, and all the noise seemed to stop inside me in one second.

In the hall Blake stood near the stage. He held a champagne glass, while Sloane stood beside him as though she were already his wife. Blake was explaining something to a short, white-haired man.

“Our expansion will change the city’s economy,” he was saying. “And, of course, with the support of the chairwoman, we…”

He looked toward the entrance.

The glass froze in his fingers.

Sloane looked at me too, and the smile slowly slid from her face.

At the other end of the hall, the event host picked up the microphone.

“Please welcome the chairwoman of the fund, Mrs. Elena Winslow.”

The name spread through the hall like a wave.

At first Blake did not understand. Then his eyes widened.

“This is impossible,” he whispered.

Sloane grasped his arm.

“Who is she?”

“My wife,” Blake answered, but it sounded as though he himself were hearing those words for the first time.

I walked toward them. The heels of my shoes knocked clearly on the marble. People made way for me. Some nodded to me, while others took out their phones.

“Elena,” Blake forced a smile. “What are you doing here?”

“I am doing your job.”

“This is my company’s event.”

!!!  Meine Ex nahm mir Haus, Auto und Tochter, doch als sie später die Zeitschrift aufschlug, verschwand ihr Lächeln

“No, Blake. This is my fund’s event.”

His face changed.

Sloane quickly intervened.

“There is probably a misunderstanding. Blake’s wife was supposed to be at home.”

“That is exactly what he told me too.”

Blake hissed through his teeth.

“We will talk later.”

“No. After eight years, later is already enough.”

At that moment my lawyer, Mirian Kent, came to me. He held a dark-blue folder. A small silver elephant symbol was engraved on its cover.

“Mrs. Winslow, everything is ready,” he told me.

Blake looked at the folder.

“What is that?”

“The thing you have deserved to see for a long time.”

He raised his hand as though he wanted to snatch the folder, but security stepped forward once.

“Don’t get in my way,” Blake said.

“I am not getting in your way,” I answered calmly. “I am simply no longer allowing you to call my life your property.”

Mirian placed the folder on the table. The music in the hall stopped. The guests gathered around us.

“Open it,” I told him.

The lawyer grasped the clasp with his fingers, but before he lifted the lid, Blake’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and lost color.

“Who is it?” I asked.

He did not answer me.

Only one word was visible on the screen: Bank.

Mirian’s fingers reached the clasp of the folder…

…the folder’s clasp opened, and at that same moment Blake ended the call.

“This is a family matter,” he said loudly. “I ask everyone to leave the hall.”

“No one is leaving,” Mirian answered. “The members of the fund’s board are already on their way.”

He took out the first document and spread it on the table. Written on it was the date of the transfer of ownership of Blake’s company. Then he placed the share register, the house deed, and the secret holding management agreement.

Blake bent down.

“This is fake.”

“No,” I said. “You simply never read it.”

Mirian adjusted his glasses.

“Eight years ago, Mr. Archibald Moreno’s fund acquired the controlling package, debts, and property registered in his name of the Winslow Technology Group. The acquisition was carried out through a confidential holding company.”

Sloane shook her head.

“This is impossible. Blake created this company himself.”

“He really did work,” I answered. “But when the company was about to collapse, my family helped. Rescue and ownership are not the same thing.”

Blake picked up the document. His fingers began to tremble.

“Your signature is here.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“From the beginning.”

“Why didn’t you tell me anything?”

The words stuck in my throat. Eight years of resentment could not disappear in one moment, but for the first time I was no longer afraid of his face.

“Because I thought we were partners. I wanted you to feel strong through your own work. But you turned my trust into humiliation.”

Lenette, whom the security employees had just brought in, rushed to the table.

“This woman is threatening my son!”

“No, Mrs. Lenette,” Mirian interrupted her calmly. “She is asserting her own rights.”

!!!  Meu marido disse que eu podia desaparecer, mas quando encontrou a aliança sobre a carta, sua mão começou a tremer

Blake stepped back.

“You cannot do all this here. I am the chief executive officer.”

“Until this evening,” I said.

A heavy silence fell over the hall.

Mirian took out the last sheet.

“The immediate suspension of management rights takes effect this minute. Mr. Blake is prohibited from access to the company’s accounts, offices, and secured systems.”

Sloane immediately stepped back.

“Blake, I knew nothing.”

“You told me the chairwoman of the fund was an old foreign woman!” he shouted.

“You were making up the plans yourself,” Sloane replied. “I was only listening to you.”

Blake looked toward me. For the first time I saw not anger in his eyes, but fear.

“Elena, let’s go home and talk.”

“That house is my property.”

Those words affected him more strongly than the documents. His knees gave way and he sank into a chair.

Suddenly my phone rang. The number was unfamiliar. I answered.

“Mrs. Winslow?” I heard a quiet woman’s voice. “I am Nora, the assistant of your former financial manager. Years ago I saw accounts I should not have seen. Blake does not know that I kept copies.”

“What does this concern?”

“It concerns not only the use of your money. He secretly transferred several of the fund’s accounts. This evening, before you entered the hall, he made the final transfer.”

Blake raised his head.

“What is she saying?”

Nora quickly continued:

“The money is still on its way. If you do not stop it now, not everything will be lost, but part of it will disappear forever. And one more thing: Blake himself signs the confirmation of the transfer on camera…”

Heavy breathing sounded beyond the call, then Nora added quietly:

“However, madam, I have not yet found the most dangerous document. It is hidden in the basement of your house…”
