Part 4 — Twelve years after returning home, my sister forbade me to enter, but when a sound rang out from the kitchen, her face turned pale

“Who?” I asked.

Instead of answering, Lucas looked toward the door.

The door of the police car outside opened. Station chief Esteban entered the yard, followed by Daniel Mora. The black bag still hung from Daniel’s hand.

Veronica immediately picked up her phone.

“Daniel, go by the back road,” she whispered.

“It is already too late,” he answered.

“Take the money.”

“The money no longer exists.”

His answer stopped everything in the room.

Veronica looked at Lucas.

“What does ‘no longer exists’ mean?”

Lucas said calmly:

“The accounts into which you were transferring the money were frozen at six in the morning. Your partner himself sent me all the statements.”

Daniel put the black bag on the floor.

“I did not want to lock them up,” he said. “The land only had to be sold. Veronica told me that the parents were in a nursing home.”

“Liar!” Veronica shouted. “You told me that if they did not sign, we had to finish everything.”

Daniel froze in place.

Lucas played the recorded voice again.

Veronica’s own voice was heard: “If Father does not sign by morning, do not give him food. Alejandro will return soon anyway, and we will blame everything on him.”

The recording continued for several seconds.

Then it ended.

Veronica sank into a chair. For the first time I heard her exhale like a person who had heard her own words not from the mouth of a stranger, but from her own head.

“I did not say that,” she whispered.

“You did,” Rosalia answered.

“I was only… helping the family.”

My father’s voice came from the basement:

“People do not help a family with a lock.”

Esteban cleared his throat awkwardly.

“Mrs. Veronica, we will need to speak with you.”

“You came here to protect me,” she told him.

“Now I have another order.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“The state prosecutor. And the person your brother called all night.”

At that moment I understood why Lucas had told me that only one person could find the second copy. I had already written to Mariana, my company’s legal director. She, in turn, contacted federal investigators and stored all the financial transfers in a secure vault.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Durante la festa di famiglia mia nuora mi ordinò di mangiare vicino al cane, ma quando indossai il cappotto suo marito smise di sorridere

Only one path remained for Veronica—denial.

“Alejandro, you cannot bring me down. I am your sister.”

“That is exactly why I trusted you.”

“Mother and Father were still hiding from you that they had money. You are selfish too.”

“I did not hide anything. I helped them.”

“Where were you for twelve years?”

I had no answer to that question. Not one that would erase my guilt. But now I was there.

“I came late,” I told her. “But I came.”

The police handcuffed Veronica. Daniel did not resist. Esteban stood by the door for a long time, as if hoping the walls would speak instead of him.

Lucas opened the basement door.

My mother sat on the floor wrapped in a warm blanket. My father lay on the bed, so thin that his shirt no longer clung to his body. When I bent down, Father first examined my face, then took something from his pocket.

It was the small copper compass.

“I thought you had lost it,” I said.

“You took it when you left. I only had its twin. But I hid this one in your room in case you ever returned.”

He opened the compass cover. Inside was still the small card on which was written: “If something happens to me, look for the old land map.”

The land map closed everything. It showed that the plot behind the house had never been sold. Veronica had tried to sell it using a forged signature. The bank statements and recordings confirmed that my monthly money was spent not on my parents’ treatment, but on Daniel’s debts and Veronica’s expensive life.

My parents were taken to the hospital.

On the first night I told my mother:

“Forgive me for disappearing for so long.”

She placed her weak hand on my cheek.

“You were late returning, son. But you returned.”

My father fought for three days, and then the doctors told me that his condition would improve. I was sitting in the hospital corridor when Mariana called me.

!!!  Fiul meu s-a certat la școală cu un băiat care îi spunea frate, iar când am intrat în birou, soțul meu a pălit

“Do you want to return to the company?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“Then what will you do?”

“I will open the house. Turn it into a real home.”

The case reached court. Veronica denied everything at first, but when she heard her own recording in court, she lowered her eyes. Daniel testified and returned part of the money. Esteban was suspended from his position, and the bank manager was charged with forgery.

I did not attend every hearing.

Sometimes even victory has a limit. A person no longer needs to watch every day as someone they once loved falls apart.

Several weeks later my parents returned home. We removed the basement door and arranged a small bright room there. We painted the walls white. Now Mother’s sewing table stands there, and Father has a wooden chair by the window.

Veronica’s room remained empty.

In her wardrobe I found only one photograph—a picture taken in childhood in which the three of us were standing together. I did not take the photograph. I left it on the wall, but removed the frame. I wanted to see those faces that existed before we betrayed one another.

Three months later I was still living in that village. I managed my company’s affairs remotely. In the mornings I went into the yard with my father, while my mother prepared tea for the neighbors in front of the shop.

One morning my little niece, Lea, approached me with pencils.

“Uncle, I drew a house.”

There was a large yellow door in the drawing. Above it was a small round object.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Your compass. So you do not lose the way home.”

My throat tightened.

“I will not lose it now.”

That same evening I received a letter from Veronica. It was short.

“Alejandro, I know that I did everything badly. If you come even once, I will explain. We are still brother and sister.”

I looked at the paper for a long time.

Then I asked my mother:

“Do you want me to answer?”

!!!  Mi hijo bloqueó la única salida de mi propiedad y exigió que firmara unos papeles, pero el agente dejó de sonreír

She added sugar to her tea and shook her head.

“An answer is given when the heart needs it. Not when someone else needs peace.”

I folded the letter and put it back in the envelope.

I still sent Veronica an answer.

“I can forgive you. Returning to you—I cannot.”

After that she wrote nothing more.

When Christmas approached, the old house no longer looked like a prison for the first time. The smell of cinnamon came from the kitchen. Mother was baking a cake, while Father sat by the window and watched the first snowflakes in the yard.

I was holding the compass in my hand.

Its needle still trembled slightly, but it still found north.

In the place of the basement there was now a small wooden table. Lea’s drawing lay on it. Below, I kept my father’s old glasses—with a new frame, but with the small trace of the same broken corner.

My father looked at me.

“Will you leave again this year?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I closed the compass.

“I have already found the way.”

That night the house did not knock from below for the first time.

From above, laughter could be heard.

Missed the beginning?
