My Wife Disappeared with Our Child When the Lawyer Showed Me One Photograph and the Man Standing Behind Me Turned Pale

That morning I found my three-month-old son’s crib empty, while his mother had left her wedding ring on the kitchen table.

When I entered the house, the silence frightened me first. Then I went into the baby’s room and froze in place. The cradle was tidy, but there was neither a blanket nor a bottle nor diapers on the mattress. Noa’s little copper bell-shaped night-light had also disappeared. Without it, my son could never fall asleep.

Vanessa’s perfume still lingered on my shirt.

I ran into the bedroom. Half of Clara’s clothes were gone. She had taken the baby bag, the travel cradle, the laptop, and the fireproof box where we kept the passports, birth certificates, and financial documents. My watches, clothes, and valuables had remained untouched.

Clara’s departure concerned only Noa. And, probably, whatever she had hidden from me.

In the kitchen, on the white surface, lay the ring. Under it I found a folded sheet of paper. Only five words were written:

“Do not search for what never protected you.”

I called Clara eleven times. Each time I reached the answering machine.

“Where is my son?” I wrote. “Clara, call me right now!”

Her mother, Linda, answered on the fourth ring.

“Is Clara with you?”

A long silence fell on the other end.

“Strange,” Linda said at last. “Only when your wife disappeared did you become afraid.”

“Where is Noa?”

“You call yourself his father, Eduardo, but you appeared in the child’s life only when you had time for it.”

“I was working.”

“No. You were lying.”

Her words left my throat dry. For six months I had been sleeping with Vanessa Cole. I told everyone that she was only a client’s representative. That night, too, I told Clara I was going to Faro to meet investors. In reality, in a hotel room in Lisbon, I woke up beside Vanessa.

I entered the hotel at eight forty-two in the evening. At two in the morning I returned home and thought I would find Clara asleep.

But she had already taken away every trace of my life.

I called my lawyer Miguel.

“We must immediately request custody of Noa.”

“Did Clara ever say that she intended to take the child?”

“No.”

“Where were you last night?”

“In Faro.”

Silence fell in the telephone.

“Eduardo, I am asking you as your lawyer. Where were you really?”

“I already told you.”

“Then this day has started badly.”

An hour later a private investigator called me and said that my card had been used at a Lisbon hotel, while the cameras showed me together with Vanessa. Then he added:

“Your wife obtained these recordings five weeks ago.”

Five weeks. Suddenly I remembered Clara’s silent gaze, the tax statements, and the changed passwords.

“The betrayal is not her main problem,” the investigator said. “She requested the accounts of three companies.”

Miguel ordered me to come to the office. Two investigators were waiting for me there. One of them held a folder bearing Noa’s name.

Miguel stood pale by the door.

“Say nothing,” he whispered.

Then he put the folder on the table and slowly opened it. My hand moved toward the first sheet…

!!!  RÉSZ 4 — A férjem anyja tíz éve gondoskodott rólam, míg egy reggelen a lányom kimondta az igazságot, és Julian elsápadt

On the sheet lay a photograph taken in front of the court. Clara stood pressed against Noa’s chest, and beside her was a man whom I had declared dead long ago.

Raul Silva.

My father’s former business partner. The man whose death certificate I had signed with my own eyes eight months earlier.

“This is impossible,” I said.

The investigator tapped the corner of the photograph with his finger.

“The picture was taken this morning, as they were leaving the courthouse.”

“Who is that man?”

Miguel lowered his eyes.

“You know exactly who he is.”

“Raul is dead.”

“According to the documents, yes.”

The air in the office grew heavy. The ticking of the wall clock sounded louder than my breathing.

After my father’s death, Raul told me that a four-million-euro trust fund had to be created for Noa. The money legally belonged to my child and was to remain untouchable until adulthood. Miguel was the trustee, and I was the signatory.

“What happened to the fund?” I asked.

Miguel pulled out a chair but did not sit down.

“Clara discovered that part of the money no longer exists.”

“How much is part?”

“Almost all of it.”

The strength left my knees.

“Did Raul do this?”

“The money went to three companies. Companies in which you are registered as director.”

“I did not sign anything.”

Miguel smiled bitterly.

“No one could have used your electronic signature without your permission.”

“I did not give permission!”

“Then who did?”

I had no answer to that question. Or I did, but I could not bring myself to say it to myself.

That same evening Clara called me. It was an unknown number. I held the phone as if I were holding a heated piece of iron in my hand.

“Clara, where are you?”

“Noa is with me. He is sleeping.”

There was tiredness in her voice, but fear could no longer be heard.

“I saw Raul in the photograph.”

“Then you already know that the story of your father’s death was a lie.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because the first time you understood the truth, you did not look at yourself; you became angry with me.”

“Where is the money?”

“You know better.”

“Clara, I did not steal it.”

“Maybe. But you signed.”

Her words dropped something heavy into my heart.

“Who helped you?”

“The person you declared dead.”

“Is Raul with you?”

Clara was silent for several seconds.

“He is now the only person proving that I did not receive money from you.”

“And why should I believe him?”

“You should not believe him. You should believe the documents.”

The connection ended.

That night I remained alone in my empty house. I entered Noa’s room and ran my hand over the small scratch left on the wall. His crib had stood there. On the table I found only one thing—the round copper base of the night-light, which Clara had taken but had accidentally left behind.

The next morning Miguel brought an assistant prosecutor to meet me.

“You have not yet been charged,” the woman said, “but if you cannot explain this movement of money, there is no point even talking about custody of the child.”

!!!  A lányom véres menyasszonyi ruhában menekült hozzám, de amikor kimondta a férje nevét, az apja arca megváltozott

“Are you using Clara against me?”

“No. We are interested in your own signature.”

Miguel placed a small memory card on the table.

“Clara gave us this recording. You are on it.”

“What recording?”

“Listen, and you will understand for yourself why she left the house.”

He turned on the computer. First my voice came from the speakers, then Raul’s.

“If this money is not transferred tomorrow morning, I will reveal everything,” Raul was saying.

My own voice answered:

“Transfer it. Clara will never find out.”

The time appeared on the screen. The recording had been made on the day when I had assured Clara that I was in the office all day.

But the most dangerous thing was still ahead. At the end of the recording the door opened and someone said: “The child has already been taken…”

“The child has already been taken,” Raul’s voice sounded in the recording. “If you do not sign today, they will take Noa from you too.”

Then my voice sounded, quiet and irritated:

“No one is to touch Clara and the child. I will arrange the documents.”

The recording stopped.

No one moved in the room. Only the computer’s small green light blinked.

“This is forged,” I said.

The assistant prosecutor shook her head.

“Voice analysis confirmed that both voices in the conversation are real.”

“I would not say such a thing.”

“You did,” she answered calmly. “And the recording was automatically saved by your phone that same evening in the cloud archive.”

Miguel lowered his eyes. Then I understood that he already knew.

“When did you see this?” I asked.

“Last night.”

“And still you told me to request custody against Clara?”

“Because I knew you would deny everything.”

“You knew the money was being stolen?”

Miguel sat down on the chair. For the first time his hands lost their firmness.

“I thought you were transferring it temporarily. Raul told me it was a deal and that the money would be returned.”

“Raul was dead.”

“No. He had simply disappeared. The death certificate turned out to be false.”

The assistant prosecutor opened a second folder.

“Raul Silva was alive and the hidden owner of three offshore companies. Your signature opened the way for the transfer of the money. But the main issue is that Clara recorded everything.”

“Where is she?”

“In a safe place.”

“With Noa?”

“The child is healthy.”

That answer allowed me to breathe for the first time.

Then the door opened and Clara herself entered. She held Noa’s gray blanket in her hand. Tiredness showed on her face, but there was determination in her eyes.

“You knew Raul was alive?” I asked.

“I found out five weeks ago.”

“And the money?”

“I found the transfers three weeks ago.”

“Why didn’t you talk to me?”

Clara put a stack on the table.

“Because when I asked you the first time, you told me my suspicions were postpartum anxiety. When I asked you the second time, you told me it would be better to think about myself instead of the child.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Volví antes de tiempo y encontré a mi prometida con otro en la cocina; cuando pregunté qué ocurría, él dejó de respirar

I lowered my head. I remembered those words.

“I did not know what I was doing.”

“But you were doing it.”

Her calm hurt me more than shouting.

“Why did you trust Raul in all this?”

“I do not trust him. His testimony explains only one part. The rest is told by the bank statements, the cameras, and your recording.”

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth. Just once.”

The sound of cars could be heard outside the window. And for the first time I saw my life through someone else’s eyes: a wife whom I had left alone; a child whose money I had put at risk; and my own voice, which confessed everything.

Suddenly Clara’s phone rang. The number was hidden. She answered, and after a few seconds her face changed.

“Who is it?” I asked.

Clara slowly put the phone down.

“Raul said that the police found only one of his accounts.”

“What does that mean?”

“He says that if I testify against him this evening, he will make the original of Noa’s birth certificate disappear.”

Miguel stood up.

“That is a threat.”

“No,” Clara said. “It means that he still has access to the registry system.”

The assistant prosecutor immediately picked up the phone, but Clara caught my eyes.

“Eduardo, your name opened this door. Now you must say whom you would allow to get that far.”

Before I could think of an answer, a message arrived on my phone. It contained an address and one sentence: “Come alone, or you will never see your son again.”

The sender was unknown. At the end of the message, however, Raul’s signature was visible…
