My husband and my best friend announced they were running away, but my laughter at Michael’s proposal suddenly stopped

While reading Daniel’s message, I was standing at the conference table when their photo appeared on the screen and my breath caught.

The first message consisted of only three words: “Claire, forgive me.”

And the second was as if someone had cut my life in half with a cold knife.

“Rachel and I are leaving together. Please don’t start looking for us.”

Rachel. My best friend for ten years. My maid of honor. The woman who knew every secret of my marriage, every quarrel, and every weak spot.

The third message had a photo attached. They were standing at O’Hare Airport. Daniel had his arm around her waist, and Rachel had her fingers clasped around his. They were both smiling.

Rachel was wearing my borrowed cream-colored coat and the pearl necklace that Daniel’s mother had given me on our wedding day.

The phone fell from my hand.

“Claire, are you all right?” asked the coworker sitting beside me, Nora.

“No,” I answered, but I could barely hear my own voice. “Not at all.”

Beyond the glass walls of the Chicago office, the afternoon sun stood in the sky, and people near the elevators were laughing as usual. Only I stood there, feeling that the floor was slowly disappearing.

I arrived home at fifteen minutes past six in the evening. Half of the bedroom closet was empty. Daniel’s shirts, passport, laptop, toothbrush, and large black suitcase had disappeared.

Only his wedding ring and a folded sheet of paper lay on the kitchen counter.

“We fell in love with each other. Rachel understands me in a way you will never understand me.”

I tore the paper in half. Then once more.

On my hand I wore the small copper compass my father had given me. On its back were engraved two words: “Return home.” At that moment the inscription seemed like mockery.

The phone rang.

It was Mom.

“Claire, it’s Dad.”

“What happened to him?”

“His heart… the doctors took him urgently. We’re at Northwestern Memorial.”

Daniel’s betrayal disappeared at that moment. I grabbed my bag and ran to the hospital.

At nine at night, Dad lay pale in the green light of the monitors. A plastic tube was attached to his arm, and a small device blinked on his finger.

“There’s my girl,” he said quietly.

“I’m here, Dad.”

“I still have a lot to do. For example, see a grandchild.”

I forced myself to smile, but something broke in my chest. I could not tell my parents about Daniel. Not when Dad was lying in bed after a heart attack.

The next morning, returning home, I saw a black car in front of my building entrance. Michael was standing beside it.

Rachel’s husband.

At a café, at ten in the morning, he put his phone on the table and showed me Rachel’s message. It was almost word for word the same.

“Two weeks ago I turned down a promotion,” he said, touching the warm rim of the coffee cup with his fingers. “She told me that work was more important to me than she was.”

“We both lost something for people who had already decided to leave,” I told him.

Michael raised his head.

“Can I ask you something?”

“How bad will it be?”

“What if we got together?”

I laughed involuntarily.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“Maybe. But I’m not finished yet.”

He leaned forward.

“Let’s make them think we’ve moved on. Together.”

“Will you deceive me for revenge?”

“I want them to regret thinking they managed to destroy us.”

The words were so absurd that laughter burst out of me again. But Michael was not smiling.

When he left, he left his business card on the table. That night I lay in the empty bed and stared at the card.

At two in the morning, I called.

“Claire?” he answered immediately.

“If we’re doing this nonsense, we need rules.”

Silence fell on the other side for several seconds. Then Michael said calmly:

“Tell me what the rules are.”

At that moment Michael’s hand moved toward the black folder lying on the table, and his fingers touched the clasp…

“First rule,” I said into the phone, “we will never lie to each other again.”

Michael did not stop his hand in the black folder. In the morning, at his apartment, Lake Michigan could be seen through the window, cold and still as steel. The folder lay on the table, and beside it was a small wooden container with corners of papers sticking out.

“Second rule,” I continued, “no kissing unless we both agree at the same time.”

“Third?”

“We don’t stay together overnight.”

“Fourth?”

“We don’t allow anyone to convince us that we are guilty.”

Michael smiled for the first time, but the smile disappeared immediately.

“We need to add a fifth rule, Claire.”

“Which one?”

“If either of us finds the truth, we will not hide it.”

I looked at the folder.

“What truth?”

He opened the clasp, although he did not yet let me look inside.

“I don’t know yet. But something looks wrong.”

That same day, at six in the evening, we saw Daniel in front of the supermarket. Rachel stood beside him and was still wearing the cream-colored coat. It was as if she had stolen my life and was now proud of it.

Michael opened the car door for me.

“If you want, we can leave,” he said.

“No. Wait for me.”

Rachel noticed me. Her face changed for a moment, then she put on false sympathy.

“Claire, how are you?”

“You should know better.”

Daniel looked away.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this,” he said.

“But it did.”

Rachel looked at Michael.

“Did you invent all this just to hurt me?”

Michael answered calmly:

“I didn’t invent anything. You simply saw what you yourself did.”

Rachel’s fingers clutched the necklace. The pearls lightly struck one another.

“We are happy,” Daniel said.

“Then why are you looking at me as if you are waiting for an answer?” I asked.

Daniel’s jaw tightened. I returned to the car, but I did not feel victory in my heart. I had only emptiness and that constant feeling that I was not seeing something.

Three days later, Michael opened the folder in my apartment. The curtains were drawn, and on the table lay a letter sent by my father’s doctor.

“Dad is better,” I said. “But I still can’t tell him what happened.”

“You are not obliged to save everyone at once.”

“I know. It’s just not how I work.”

Michael took statements out of the folder.

Large amounts had been transferred from an account opened in my name during the last three months. The same thing was happening in his account.

“I didn’t do this,” I said.

“Neither did I.”

“Daniel had my password, but never…”

“And Rachel kept a digital copy of my signature,” Michael interrupted me. “She used it for work documents.”

The sound of the refrigerator motor could be heard in the room. I touched the compass and felt its cold edge on my finger.

“How much disappeared?”

“I don’t know exactly yet. But this isn’t only about money.”

He took a small voice recorder from the lower pocket of the folder.

“I accidentally recorded their conversation in the hotel corridor. I didn’t know what I was listening to until I found these numbers.”

“Let me hear it.”

Michael pressed his hand against the device.

First there was a rustle. Then Rachel’s voice.

“As soon as the money crosses abroad, everything will be over.”

Daniel asked, “Claire and Michael?”

Rachel answered, “They won’t be able to prove anything. They can’t even speak against each other.”

My knees gave way.

“When was this recorded?”

“Yesterday.”

“Then they are still here.”

Michael nodded.

“And if they can’t transfer the money today, they may do something else.”

The phone rang. Daniel’s number appeared on the screen.

Michael pressed the recording button.

“Answer it,” he told me.

“What should I tell him?”

“The thing he is waiting to hear most.”

The call repeated a second time. I moved my finger toward the green button. When I answered, I heard Daniel’s whisper:

“Claire, if you want your father to remain alive, come alone to the Mercer Hotel tomorrow morning…”

“What did you say?” Cold ran through my spine.

I could hear Daniel breathing on the phone. Michael stood in front of me with a finger held to his lips.

“You heard correctly,” Daniel whispered. “I have your father’s old credit agreements. If you go to the police, I’ll submit them to the bank. His company will go bankrupt.”

“Are you threatening my father?”

“I’m offering you a way out. Come alone tomorrow. Bring access to the accounts.”

“Does Rachel know you are doing this?”

Silence.

That was enough.

“Daniel, you are not alone,” I said.

“Ten tomorrow. If you tell anyone, the first call will go to the hospital.”

The call ended.

Michael immediately opened the folder’s inner pocket and took out several printed sheets.

“Now you need to know everything,” he told me.

At nine in the morning, in a small meeting room at the hotel, we were met by Elisa Harper, a financial investigator hired by Michael. A black recorder, bank statements, and one memory card lay on the table.

“This recording is legal,” Elisa said. “One of you two participated in the conversation. Michael recorded only what he himself witnessed.”

“Where did the money go?” I asked.

Elisa put a finger on the paper.

“Daniel and Rachel created a fake consulting company. They took out loans in your names and transferred the money to its account. Their escape was not a romantic elopement. They wanted to leave the country after the crime.”

Michael looked at me.

“The last transfer is supposed to be completed this evening.”

The memory card contained footage taken from the hotel cameras. Rachel and Daniel appeared on the screen. They stood in the room and did not touch each other.

Rachel was angry.

“Claire and Michael are together. If they freeze the accounts, we will lose everything.”

“Calm down,” Daniel answered. “Claire will do anything because of her father.”

“You said she was weak.”

“She isn’t weak. She simply doesn’t yet know how much we took from her.”

Such silence fell in the room that I heard my heartbeat.

Michael held out his hand to me, but I still could not take it.

“They used my father’s debts too,” I said.

“But not for the reason Daniel told you,” Elisa explained. “These documents are false. We have already sent the real records to the bank. Your father’s property is not in danger.”

A new message arrived on the phone.

“Come alone, Claire. If you bring Michael, your father will lose everything.”

Michael photographed the message.

“Now he also has written evidence of the threat,” Elisa said.

“The police?” I asked.

“They are already on the way. But first we must document their banking movement. If we frighten them now, they will disappear.”

In hotel room four hundred twelve, at ten in the morning, I sat in front of Daniel. Rachel stood by the window. In her hand my pearl necklace was shining again.

“Where is the access?” Daniel asked.

“First tell me what you did to my father.”

“Nothing. I only frightened you.”

“You used my parents’ names in illegal documents.”

Rachel’s face went pale.

“You weren’t supposed to find out.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Be quiet.”

At that moment Michael’s voice sounded from behind the wall, clear and calm:

“But she already found out.”

Daniel froze in place. The police officers pushed the door open.

The necklace fell from Rachel’s hand.

Everything seemed finished until Elisa looked at her phone and her face changed.

“Claire, you need to see this. The last transfer has already been completed… and the money went to an account connected with your father…”
