I Found My Son in a Car with His Children on His Birthday — But One Call from a Lawyer Erased Lorena’s Smile

That morning I woke up my son not in his own house but in a gray car, while my five-year-old grandchildren slept under one blanket in the back seat. For three days I had been telling everyone that I was unexpectedly going to the birthday of Daniel, the thirty-two-year-old who lived on the fifth floor. On the plane I held a small present — a wooden music box, on whose lid two little dinosaurs were carved. Daniel had drawn exactly such dinosaurs for the first time as a child and then told me that one day he would give them to his own children.

I arrived in the Mexican city at half past seven in the morning. I took a taxi to his house, but found the courtyard gate locked. At first I thought that Daniel had spent the night at work again. Then I noticed a gray car parked at the corner of the street. Its windows were fogging up from the inside. I recognized the license plate.

I approached slowly.

There were bags, water bottles, folded clothes, and fast-food paper wrappings scattered on the back seat. Daniel had fallen asleep at the wheel, leaning toward the door. The sleeve of his jacket was torn. On the back seat, Mateo and Emiliano’s faces were pressed against each other.

I knocked twice on the car window.

Daniel jumped. First fear appeared in his eyes, and then such shame, as if it was not me but the whole city that he had seen.

“Dad?.. What are you doing here?”

“I came to wish you a happy birthday.”

I pointed at the bag.

“Why are you sleeping in the car with the children?”

He lowered his head.

“It is difficult to explain.”

“Three people are living in a car. There is no more difficult explanation than that.”

Mateo opened his eyes.

“Grandpa, did you really come?”

“I came, champion.”

Emiliano pressed a plush dinosaur toy to his chest and asked me quietly:

“Are we going on an adventure today?”

Daniel answered quickly:

“Yes, son.”

His voice cracked so much that I clenched my teeth. I did not want the children to see my tears.

An hour later we were sitting in a small restaurant. The boys ate pancakes as if they had not seen food for several days. Daniel, meanwhile, held his coffee with both hands. The skin on his fingers was cracked, he had dark circles under his eyes, and his beard covered half his face.

“Three days ago you told me that everything was fine,” I said quietly.

“I did not want to frighten you.”

“There is no shame in asking for help.”

He looked at the cup.

“You invested money in me, Dad. Two million seven hundred thousand pesos. And I lost everything.”

“How everything?”

Daniel was silent for a long time. Then he took a phone from his pocket. Its screen was cracked. First he showed me court messages, then bank transfers, and finally one old letter.

“If you ever try to regain control of the company, I will prove to everyone that you are not in your right mind.”

The sender was Lorena — his former wife.

“When did she send this to you?”

“Before she threw me out of the house.”

“Why did you not show it to the lawyer?”

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“I showed it. He told me it probably would not be enough.”

That sentence awakened something inside me.

“Today you and the children will sleep in a hotel. Tomorrow we will find out everything from the beginning.”

“Dad, I do not have money…”

“I am not talking to you about money. I am talking to you about the truth.”

Daniel remained silent. But I already knew whom I had to call. Years earlier I had accidentally heard a surname in a financial matter — Rogelio Salazar. That same surname was written on one of the documents on Daniel’s screen.

In the evening, when the children fell asleep in the hotel room, Daniel opened the phone again. A new message appeared. This time the sender was an unknown number.

He put his finger on the screen and told me:

“I have not shown this message to anyone yet…”

I slowly brought my hand to the screen, but before opening the message, someone knocked on the room door…

The knock on the door was repeated three times. It was eleven o’clock at night in the hotel room. Mateo and Emiliano’s breathing could be heard evenly, while Daniel jumped up from the bed and covered the children with his body.

“Who is it?” he asked.

There was no answer.

Daniel looked toward me.

“Maybe it is Lorena.”

“Do not open the door.”

They knocked once more. This time a small envelope slid under the door. There was neither a name nor a hotel stamp on it. I picked up the envelope. The paper had a sharp lemon smell — exactly like the one Lorena used at home when important guests were expected.

Daniel shook his head.

“Dad, do not open it.”

“Why?”

“Because everything I touch gets even worse.”

“From now on you will not touch anything alone.”

I put the envelope on the table. We did not open it that night. In the morning, before the children went down to the hotel breakfast, I dialed the number of my old friend, the corporate lawyer Armando Moreno. I had trusted his advice for almost twenty years.

“Alejandro, if you are calling me, the matter cannot be ordinary,” he told me.

“My son has been deprived of his house, company, and relationship with his children. Money may also have been transferred.”

“May have?”

“I do not have the facts yet.”

“Then bring me facts, not anger.”

That same day Armando recommended Verónica Cruz, who worked in family law. Her office was on the fourth floor of an old building in the city center. Dust had settled on the dried cactus on the windowsill, and the folders on the desk were arranged as if each had its own weight.

Verónica first looked at Daniel.

“What do you expect from me?”

“The return of my children,” Daniel answered.

“I will not promise you miracles. Only that we will prove what the documents say.”

She checked every document one by one. Six months earlier Lorena had convinced Daniel to re-register the house only in her name. Supposedly to protect the family from possible creditors of the company. Three months later she changed the locks and stated in court that Daniel was aggressive, unstable, and dangerous.

“Did you write these messages?” Verónica asked.

“No.”

“But the phone number was yours.”

“The number was mine. The messages were not.”

For the financial part we hired an accountant, Julián Ortiz. That same week Daniel got a job as a project manager at a small technology company. I rented a three-room apartment for him and the children near the school.

“Dad, I cannot repay this to you,” he told me in the new apartment as he hung the children’s drawings on the wall.

“I am not asking you to.”

“Then why are you doing it?”

“Because I am your father.”

Verónica asked the court to move the meetings with the children from Lorena’s mother’s supervision to a professional center. At the very first visit Mateo hugged his father around the neck, while Emiliano opened a book on his knees. The supervisor recorded that Daniel calmly soothed the child’s crying.

Lorena’s mother, however, described the same incident in earlier reports as a “threatening outburst.”

Three weeks later Julián placed six folders on our office table.

“Your two million seven hundred thousand pesos entered the company. Several months later almost the same amount left for an account connected with Rogelio Salazar’s company.”

“For what purpose?” I asked.

“Payment to a supplier.”

“Which supplier?”

Julián shook his head.

“There is no contract. There is no invoice. There is no trace of a service delivered.”

Daniel leaned back in the chair.

“What else did you find?”

“For fourteen months, small transfers to accounts connected with Lorena. Ten thousand, eighteen thousand, thirty-five thousand, seventy thousand pesos. In total, more than five million moved, and it needs an explanation.”

That same evening Verónica called me.

“The digital expert examined the messages. Some screenshots were altered. Several messages do not appear at all in the telephone company’s records.”

“Is that enough?”

“It is a sufficient beginning.”

Then she fell silent.

“But we found one more thing. Lorena deleted one letter and thought it had disappeared forever.”

“What did it say?”

“I will not tell you by phone yet. Come tomorrow morning. This letter is not only about money.”

That night I told Daniel nothing. He stood by the children’s room door and listened to Mateo and Emiliano laughing. For the first time in three months, I saw something like hope on his face.

But at six in the morning Verónica called me again.

“Alejandro, the letter also shows the involvement of Lorena’s mother.”

“What letter was it?”

“There is one sentence in it that turns the whole case upside down.”

“Tell me.”

“I cannot tell you until I tell you who its recipient was. Because the letter from Lorena was not sent to anyone we had suspected until now…”

That same morning, at fifteen minutes past eight, I entered Verónica’s office. A laptop, a stack of papers, and a small memory card were already lying on the table. Daniel stood by the window. His hands were in his pockets, but I could still see his fingers trembling.

Julián and the digital expert, Cecilia Navarro, were also in the room. Cecilia opened two windows on the screen.

“This is the message that was submitted to court in Daniel’s name,” she said. “It says: ‘I will take the children away from you so that you will no longer want to live.’”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I never wrote that.”

“According to the telephone company’s records, your phone was not sending a message at all at that time,” Cecilia continued. “The screenshot was created eleven minutes after the end of a call that Lorena made to her mother.”

“That still does not prove that her mother created it,” I said.

“Not by itself. But now we have a recovered copy of the email.”

Verónica turned the screen toward us. The letter had been sent from Lorena’s personal address to her mother’s address. The date matched the week when Daniel was thrown out of the house.

“First I will create the messages. Then we will show the judge that he is dangerous to the children. Dad will transfer the money before anyone realizes. If Daniel asks his father for help, we will say that he is applying pressure.”

Such silence fell over the room that the ticking of the wall clock sounded loud.

Daniel looked at the screen and seemed to have had the air leave him.

“So everything was planned?”

Verónica answered calmly:

“The letter shows that they discussed creating evidence against you. This must be connected with the expert examination and the rest of the banking material.”

Julián unfolded the next sheet.

“And here is the complete chain of the transfer. The money moved from your company’s account to Rogelio’s construction company account, and from there it was divided into two parts. One part ended up in Lorena’s brother’s account, the other in the firm that paid for the statements prepared against you in court.”

Daniel collapsed into the chair.

“I slept in the car for three months. I told the children that we were on an adventure.”

I sat beside him and put my hand on his shoulder.

“Now they will not have to believe that anymore.”

Verónica closed the folder.

“We will file the motion today. We will also prepare a report about the financial crime.”

“What will Lorena do?” Daniel asked.

“First she will deny it. Then she will say that the letter was taken out of context. Therefore we will submit everything together: the banking trail, telephone records, the expert examination, therapy records, and the reports of the professional supervisors.”

Daniel looked up for the first time.

“They thought my therapy was evidence against them.”

“On the contrary,” Verónica told him. “You asked for help when you were under pressure. That is not weakness.”

At that moment my phone rang. The number was unknown.

“Are you Alejandro Moreno?” a man’s voice asked.

“Who are you?”

“Rogelio Salazar. I advise you to stop interfering in Daniel’s case.”

Daniel looked toward me. I turned on the speaker.

“My son’s money ended up with you,” I told him.

“It was a business transaction.”

“Without a contract?”

There was a pause.

“You do not know whom you are opposing.”

“I know whom the truth protects.”

“If this material reaches the court, your son’s personal matters will also be published. His therapy, debts, everything.”

Daniel turned pale, but said nothing.

“Should I take that as a threat?” I asked.

“A warning.”

The call ended.

Cecilia closed the laptop at that very moment.

“We have one problem,” she said.

“What problem?” Daniel asked.

“This call was recorded. But another voice can be heard in the recording before the conversation began. Someone told Rogelio that we had already found the recovered letter.”

“Who?” I asked.

Cecilia played the recording. Lorena’s voice sounded in the background:

“Dad, if you do not stop them today, you will lose all the accounts…”

But after that she said a sentence that none of us expected to hear…
