Part 4 — I was bathing Dante’s mother at home when Luka’s unexpected question silenced the entire room

Someone was waiting calmly on the other side.

Luka immediately turned off the room’s light.

“Mariam, take my mother to the northern exit,” he told her on the phone. “Sophia will stay with me.”

“No,” I answered.

He looked at me.

“This is not the time for negotiations.”

“Because of my mother I hid all my life. I will not do this a second time.”

Heavy footsteps sounded outside. One. Second. Third.

Then someone knocked on the door.

“Luka,” a man’s voice sounded, “I have come in Marco Dante’s name.”

Luka’s fingers froze on the phone.

“Why did Marco not come himself?”

“Because he knows you speak to him when you have no way out.”

I clenched the copper swallow clip in my fist.

Luka quickly opened a narrow door hidden behind the bookshelf. A small camera appeared from there.

“The whole conversation was recorded,” he told me. “Your mother had one device. I added a second.”

“Then why did we not run?”

“Because the person outside did not come alone.”

His phone rang again.

This time it was the lawyer.

“Mr. Dante,” a woman’s stern voice sounded, “an order has already been filed at the police station. I advise you not to touch anyone and not to take independent action.”

“Does Marco know?”

“He knows that we have enough material. But one more thing happened. The head of the harbor financial service handed all the bank records to the investigators.”

Luka lowered his eyes.

“That is why he came here.”

“Not only for that,” said the lawyer. “Your uncle’s own men abandoned him this morning. He lost protection, money, and influence. Now he is desperate.”

A blow struck the door.

The shelf shook.

Luka took the recorder and brought it to the camera.

“Marco, can you hear me?”

Laughter sounded from outside.

“Boy, you always talked too much.”

Luka turned on the recording.

Elena’s voice sounded in the room. Then Marco’s old conversation. Clearly. With such clarity as if he himself were standing in the room.

“Giovanni must be silenced. If he cannot be silenced, silence his son. The woman who hid the boy is a witness. And her daughter is only an obstructing remnant.”

Silence fell on the other side of the corridor.

The man standing outside said quietly:

“This is impossible.”

Luka played the recording from the beginning.

Marco’s own voice sounded again.

“Elena’s death will look like an accident. And the child will never understand why his mother no longer breathes.”

I closed my eyes.

Twelve years returned in one second. The white ceiling of the hospital. Mother’s cold fingers. The doctor’s voice saying that everything had happened quickly. And I thought that I had failed to save her.

Luka took my hand.

“This was never your fault.”

“I know,” I said, although I still could not believe it.

The man outside prepared a gun. Then the sound of sirens came from far away.

Marco’s people tried to escape, but all the exits of the house were already locked. Ten minutes later the police broke down the door. Four officers entered the room, followed by Luka’s lawyer.

“Do not move,” one officer said.

Luka raised his hands.

“This recording and the financial accounts are evidence.”

“And you?”

“I am a witness.”

Marco’s representative came directly toward me.

“Mrs. Moretti, you do not know what forces you are confronting.”

For the first time I did not step back.

“I know. They have already been in my house.”

Several hours later Marco Dante was arrested near the old harbor warehouse. He had a new passport, cash, and a piece of paper with my address written on it.

Luka was questioned all night.

I sat in Isabella’s room. A small glass of her medicines stood on the windowsill. It was four in the morning when the door opened.

Luka entered.

“I am no longer your defender,” I told him.

“Why?”

“Because you no longer need someone who speaks in your place.”

He nodded.

“That is right.”

“Why did you hide my mother’s recording from me for so long?”

“Because it was not safe for you yet. And because I was afraid that if you learned the truth, you would look at me as everyone else does.”

“How?”

“As a person whose being near is dangerous.”

I looked toward the window.

“You were dangerous.”

Luka did not avoid these words.

“I know.”

That same morning he dismantled his security network. He handed parts of the companies to lawful managers, and personally brought the illegal harbor contracts to the investigators. He did not try to preserve his power. For the first time in his life he accepted losing control not as defeat, but as responsibility.

Three weeks later Marco’s trial began.

I went only once.

I gave testimony, played the recording, and left the courtroom while the lawyers attacked one another shouting. Luka decided to stay until the end.

When he came out of the courthouse, he told me:

“For the first time I heard my own family as a stranger would hear it.”

“What do you mean?”

“For years I thought harsh words were power. When I heard Marco’s voice in the recording, I realized it had only been the voice of fear.”

There was weariness in his eyes, but the old arrogance was gone.

I emptied my old house.

Only my mother’s white wooden bed remained in her room. I placed the sewing box on the table. The wine-colored stain was still visible. The hidden capsule was no longer in the box, but threads, small scissors, and a half-finished green scarf that Mother had been knitting for me remained there.

I stood in the empty room for a long time.

Then I opened the window.

For the first time in twelve years, air entered there freely.

Two months later I moved to a small coastal town. I began working in a hospice. Now caring for the sick was no longer only for money. I could hold their hands without imposing on myself the obligation of saving them.

Isabella came to me every week.

She walked slowly, holding a cane in her hand. As soon as she entered the house, she sat by the kitchen window and asked for tea.

“You look better,” she told me one snowy evening.

“You too.”

“Me because now I am hiding nothing.”

After her words, both of us looked at the tea in silence.

Luka wrote to us rarely. He managed the lawful part of his business, and cooperated with investigators on the remaining matters. Once he sent me only one photograph: a small garden where he had planted a tree in my mother’s name.

On the back was written one sentence: “This debt can never be settled for me, but I can still carry it.”

I did not answer.

Not because I hated him.

But because I no longer wanted to carry his guilt.

In the fourth month Luka came himself. It was six in the evening. The first snow was beginning. He knocked on the door three times, exactly as Isabella used to knock.

I opened the door.

He was holding my mother’s half-finished green scarf.

“This remained with you,” he said.

“No. It remained with you.”

“Sophia, I did not come to bring back the past.”

“Then why did you come?”

Luka looked at me for a long time.

“I wanted to know whether it would ever be possible for me simply to be Luka. Not Dante. Not the man everyone fears.”

Outside, snow fell on the roof.

“You must decide that,” I told him. “I cannot live in your place anymore.”

He nodded.

“And if you ever need me?”

“Then write me a letter. I will decide whether to answer you.”

Pain flashed across Luka’s face, but this time he showed neither anger nor demand.

“Fair.”

“Yes.”

He left the green scarf at the door and went away.

That night I opened the sewing box. I put the copper swallow clip inside. I placed my mother’s threads beside it and carefully folded the half-finished scarf.

Then I sat by the window.

The snow was falling more strongly. By the streetlamp the swallow’s small wings shone, as if a bird left from the past were finally learning freedom.

I remembered my mother’s prayer.

“Stand where my hands can no longer reach.”

This time I was no longer asking God to wear my burden for someone.

I placed it on the ground myself.

And for the first time I did not pick it back up.

Missed the beginning?
