Part 4 — My Ex-Wife Humiliated Me in Court and Demanded That I Be Stripped of My Rights to Our Child, but One Question from the Judge Made Gregory’s Smile Disappear

The windows of the black car were fogged, but the low sound of its engine still reached the courtroom.

Reed took the phone from me.

“Did this message just arrive?”

“Yes.”

“Do not call the number. First we need to establish its location.”

Judge Whitmore had security lock the door and looked at Jessica.

“Who knew that your daughter would be here today?”

Jessica could barely move her lips.

“The school. Me. Richard.”

Hartwell quickly raised his head.

“I do not know where the child is.”

“Put your phone on the table,” Reed told him.

“You do not have the right to do that.”

“Now we do.”

Hartwell covered the phone with his hand. Security grabbed his wrist. At that same moment, his phone rang.

Richard Crane’s name appeared on the screen.

Hartwell looked at the call and no longer knew whether to answer. Reed picked up the phone and turned on speaker mode.

“Gregory,” Richard’s hurried voice sounded, “you ruined everything. Vincent knows about the fund.”

Hartwell closed his eyes.

“Calm down, Richard.”

“How can I calm down? The accounts are frozen. The board of trustees contacted the police. My office was searched.”

I leaned against the table. My fingers again searched for the small metal badge on my shirt.

Richard continued:

“Fix this in court. Tell them the recording is fake.”

“It is already too late.”

“Then force Jessica to say something. She believes everything you tell her.”

Jessica spoke up.

“I will not tell you anything anymore.”

Silence fell on the other end of the phone.

“Jessica?” Richard asked.

“You told me Vincent had nothing. You told me the fund did not exist. You used Emma for your own benefit too.”

“You signed it yourself.”

That sentence cut through the room like a knife.

Jessica covered her face with her hands.

Reed ended the call. He turned to Hartwell.

“Now you have heard your own words. In court you said that Mr. Dalton was incapable. On the phone you admitted that the goal was to seize his property.”

!!!  Me prohibieron acercarme al ataúd de mi padre después de dieciséis años, pero cuando mencionaron su última instrucción, mi hermanastro palideció

Hartwell heard the harshness of his own voice in the recording for the first time. For several seconds he stared at the screen as if he were seeing another person’s face.

“I was only doing my job,” he whispered.

“You were turning my daughter into a case,” I told him.

Reed signaled the investigators outside. Within a few minutes it became clear that the black car had been rented in the name of a courthouse employee. The driver turned out to be a former employee of Richard’s private security. He had not managed to take Emma from school: the federal team stopped him at the school entrance before she got into the car.

When I heard this, my knees gave way.

“Dad,” Emma’s voice sounded on the phone.

“I am here, little one.”

“Was Mom telling the truth? Did you really have no money?”

I closed my eyes.

“I have never been poor in love. I will explain the rest when I see you.”

That evening Emma was brought to me at the federal building. She was holding a pink backpack, and a small plastic moon hung from its zipper.

She ran toward me.

I bent down and hugged her. For a long time I said nothing.

“You are still wearing your shirt,” she told me.

“Today this shirt was with me when everything changed.”

“Is that bad?”

“No. It is simply time to wear other clothes too.”

Richard was arrested the next morning for fraud, financial crimes, and attempting to abduct a child. Hartwell’s status as a lawyer was suspended, and the court handed his case materials over to the investigation. Jessica was not charged, but temporary custody was granted to me. She was required to see Emma only under the supervision of a specialist.

I was not asking for her to be punished.

I simply stopped trying to protect her from the consequences she had chosen herself.

Three weeks later I entered our former house to take Emma’s remaining things. Her room was almost empty. Only a box of pencils and my old photograph lay on the bed.

In the photograph, Emma and I stood on the seashore. She was holding a yellow paper boat. I was wearing that same blue shirt then too.

I saw a small scratch on the closet door marking Emma’s height.

The first line had been drawn at the age of four.

The last one—recently.

I put the photograph into my pocket.

Jessica stood on the threshold.

“You can stay,” she told me. “I will explain everything.”

“Everything has already been explained.”

“I loved you.”

“Maybe. But love that makes a person bargain over his own child is no longer a safe place.”

She lowered her head.

I closed the door and, for the first time, did not want to look back.

Six months later we were living in a small, bright house on the other side of the city. In the morning Emma went to school. I worked at the accounting and security company whose management I had once entrusted to others.

The money from the fund was still protected in Emma’s name. I had not withdrawn a single dollar for her. Instead, every week we studied together how to open a bank account, how to protect her signature, and why one should not trust a person merely because he wears an expensive suit.

One morning I found Emma’s drawing on the kitchen table.

It showed our house, with a large yellow sun on the roof and two people by the window.

“Is this you?” I asked.

“I am,” Emma said. “And you are here because this time you are not going anywhere.”

“I will not go anywhere.”

“Then keep your shirt too.”

The blue shirt had already been washed and folded. Its small metal badge hung to one side, as if the weight of that entire day had been left on it.

Several weeks later I received a letter from Jessica. It was short.

“I want us to start again.”

“Dad,” she asked me, “if you had not been silent in court that day, would everything still have changed?”

I sat down beside her.

“Probably not. But that day I was the one controlling the silence for the first time.”

“And now?”

A snowflake clung to the window and slowly slid down.

“Now I control being with you.”

She rested her head on my shoulder.

The blue shirt hung over the back of the chair. Its small metal badge flashed once in the dim light.

It was no longer the clothing of the man whom everyone considered insignificant.

It was the evidence of the day when I no longer needed to prove myself.

I hung the blue shirt on the door and turned off the light.

This time I stayed in the house.

Missed the beginning?
