The Rich Mafia Boss Demanded Answers After My Dish — and the Old Woman Sitting Beside Him Suddenly Turned Pale

That evening, when Cassius Wayne emptied his plate completely, twelve people stood by the wall in the dining hall and dared even to breathe carefully.

Wood quietly crackled in the fireplace. The glass drops of the chandelier cast cold light onto the marble table. Cassius sat motionless in the armchair, his fingers wrapped around the wooden handles, while his eyes were frozen on the empty plate.

For two years, he had not eaten even a single dish to the end.

“Who prepared this?” he asked.

His voice was calm, but everyone in this house knew that his calmness was the most dangerous thing of all.

The elderly butler, Silvio, cleared his throat.

“Sir, the chef only selected the ingredients. The dish was prepared in the kitchen.”

“That is not an answer.”

The young cleaner leaned his back against the wall. Someone dropped a silver spoon on the floor, and its clatter sounded in the hall like a gunshot.

I stood by the kitchen door. There was flour on my apron, and my hands were trembling so much that I could barely press my fingers together.

“I prepared it,” I said at last.

All twelve faces turned toward me.

For the first time, Cassius looked directly at me. His gaze was heavy, as if the air in the room had suddenly thickened.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You are not the chef of my kitchen.”

“I did not say that I was.”

Silvio looked at me sternly.

“Marin, be quiet.”

But it was already too late. Cassius slightly raised his hand, and Silvio fell silent.

“Come here,” he told me.

My legs became heavy. At that moment I remembered another door, another rich house, and a woman’s cold smile when she tore the paper containing the most precious news for me into pieces. I remembered the bag soaked in the rain, the humiliated look, and the words that still echoed in my ears: “You will never work in this neighborhood again.”

In my bag lay my grandmother’s old recipe notebook. A corner of its brown leather cover was broken off, and yellowed stains from the years could be seen on its pages. It was from there that I took the idea for the dish when I saw the ingredients accidentally left in the kitchen that night.

Cassius looked toward my bag.

“What do you have there?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

For the first time, I saw fear on Silvio’s face.

Three weeks earlier, he had come to me on a rainy evening, when I had lost my job and my sister, Laia, was waiting for me in the hospital. He told me that an elderly woman in the Wayne house needed care. The salary was so large that for the first time I had hope for Laia’s operation.

But he also gave me a warning.

“Ask nothing about the family’s past. Do not enter locked rooms. And most importantly—if you meet the owner of the house, never look at his feet.”

At the time, I did not understand why someone’s feet should be so dangerous.

Now I stood in front of Cassius’s wheelchair, waiting for an answer.

“Who taught you this dish?” he asked.

“My grandmother.”

“What was your grandmother’s name?”

My heartbeat quickened.

“Elena Holloway.”

The sound of a porcelain cup breaking came from the old woman’s room. Edith Wayne, who reacted to almost nothing, let out a scream.

!!!  Regresé de una misión y encontré a mi esposa expulsada bajo la nieve, pero la sonrisa de mi padre desapareció

Cassius gripped the arm of the chair so tightly that his fingers turned white.

“Give me the notebook.”

“Why?”

“Marin, now!” The pleading and command in Silvio’s voice became mixed together.

Cassius looked at him.

“Lock the door.”

Silvio slowly closed the door. Then Cassius nodded to me and said:

“Put the bag on the table. Now, before I open it, there is one thing you must know…”

He reached his hand toward the bag…

…his fingers were still touching the bag’s leather handle when the sound of car brakes came from outside the house.

Everyone looked up at the same time. Silvio moved to the window, pulled the curtain aside slightly, and immediately stepped back.

“Who came?” I asked.

“No one,” he answered too quickly.

Cassius took the notebook from the bag. He held the cover in his hands so carefully, as if he were touching not paper but a living person. His eyes stopped on the very first page.

There, in my grandmother’s handwriting, was written: “Winter soup for those who could no longer return home.”

The color drained from Cassius’s face.

“Where have you seen this handwriting?” he asked.

“Nowhere. It belongs to my grandmother.”

“Your mother’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“What was your mother’s name?”

Something changed in his question. He was no longer speaking to me as a servant. It was as if he were looking for a lost part of his own life in my answer.

“Anna Holloway. She and my father died in an accident when I was twelve.”

“Laia?”

I froze when I heard her name.

“You know my sister?”

Silvio lowered his eyes.

Cassius folded the notebook.

“Laia is being treated at the Wayne clinic.”

“Everyone who processes the hospital bills knows that.”

“No. Not everyone can know that her condition worsened in the last week.”

I pushed the chair back.

“What are you saying?”

“I am saying that your sister cannot have the operation several months from now anymore. She has only three weeks.”

The words fell into the middle of the room and remained there. I felt cold in my chest, as if someone had locked a door inside me.

“How do you know this?”

“Because I am paying for her treatment.”

“You?”

“Anonymously.”

“Why?”

Cassius did not answer me. At that moment the door opened and a young man entered. He wore a black coat, his wet hair was stuck to his forehead, and he held a small metal box in his hand.

At the sight of him, Silvio reached toward his pocket.

“Dario, you should not have been here.”

“It is too late,” the man said. “The Palermo people found out Laia’s location.”

My legs gave way.

“What does ‘found out’ mean?”

Dario looked at Cassius.

“Two strangers entered the hospital. They were wearing doctors’ uniforms. They were planning to transfer the girl.”

“Where is my sister?” I screamed.

“In a protected room. But she cannot remain there for long.”

Cassius raised his hand.

“Everyone out.”

“Not me,” I said. “This is about my sister.”

“That is exactly why you must leave.”

“All my life everyone told me that nothing concerned me. First they kept silent about my mother, and now you are talking about my sister as if she were your property. I am not going anywhere.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — La familia de mi prometido me presentó como enfermera, pero cuando entré al quirófano, su madre dejó de sonreír

Silence fell over the room.

Cassius noticed my eyes for the first time. His face hardened, but there was no anger in his gaze anymore. It looked more like exhaustion.

“I do not own your sister, Marin. I protect her.”

“From whom?”

Dario placed the metal box on the table.

“From the man who knows who you are.”

The box was locked. A small red seal, completely unknown to me, could be seen on its top.

Cassius looked at Silvio.

“It is time she learned everything.”

“Not yet,” Silvio said quietly. “If she learns the truth, she may refuse.”

“What choice do I have?” I asked.

Cassius turned his face toward me.

“You have a choice. You can open this box and learn why I found you three weeks ago. Or you can leave here and spend your whole life wondering why your grandmother’s recipe resembled my dead wife.”

My fingers touched the lock of the box.

At that same moment Edith’s voice came from upstairs. The old woman, who had barely spoken for two years, shouted clearly:

“Do not touch Elena’s children!”

Cassius closed his eyes.

I lifted the lock and slowly opened the lid of the box. Inside lay one sealed envelope, on which my name was written…

❤️ Thank you for following me to the end! To understand the ending, like and write “yes” 👇

…I placed the envelope on the table. My name was written there in my grandmother’s handwriting, although the age of that paper was clearly greater than my age.

“Open it,” Cassius said.

“Do you know what is inside?”

“I know whom it is from.”

The clock in the corridor struck midnight. Its sound became heavier with every strike.

I tore the edge of the envelope. Inside lay two sheets of paper, a small photograph, and a laboratory report. In the photograph a young woman stood by a lake. She had a head tilted slightly like mine and a small mole on her left cheek.

“This is my mother,” I said.

Cassius looked at the photograph.

“This is Elena. My wife.”

It was as if the air disappeared.

“My mother never spoke about you.”

“Because I lost her. Not through death. Through my choices.”

He slid the paper toward me. It said that Cassius Wayne was my biological father. The second result also concerned Laia.

“No,” I said quietly. “This is a lie.”

“I also wanted it to be a lie,” Cassius said. “Until I received the result of your DNA.”

Silvio lowered his head.

“I checked. Secretly, with a strand of your hair that was found in the kitchen. Mr. Cassius did not know how to tell you.”

“I have been here for three weeks and all of you knew?”

“I learned only three days ago,” Cassius said. “But I recognized your face from the day I first saw you.”

The photograph trembled in my hand.

“Why did my mother take us away?”

Cassius said nothing for a long time.

“Because my enemies knew that I had children. One night Elena took you and Laia away. She said that staying with me was more dangerous than leaving me. I thought we would bring you back later. But that same week she was attacked. She survived, although she chose to hide.”

!!!  Ich übergab meiner Rivalin den Familienring vor dreihundert Gästen, doch als sie ihn nahm, wich meinem Mann die Farbe aus dem Gesicht

“Then she died in the accident.”

“The accident was not accidental,” Dario said. “They damaged the brakes on the road.”

I could hear the sound of blood in my ears.

“My father?”

“He was trying to protect you,” Cassius said. “Both of them died, and you were left with relatives. I searched for you for years. At last I reached you, but by then you had already lost your job and your sister was lying in the hospital.”

“Why did you not come directly?”

Cassius looked down at his wheelchair.

“Because twenty years ago I could not stop my enemy. Two years ago he came for me again. My car was forced off the road. Since then I have not been able to move my legs. I wanted to be help, not danger, in your life.”

The old woman Edith stood at the door. Her hands were trembling.

“She has Elena’s eyes,” she said. “I recognized her immediately.”

Something broke inside me. All my life I had thought that my parents’ death was simply a tragedy. Now I understood that behind it stood someone’s long, silent war.

Cassius held out his hand to me.

“Marin, I cannot return the lost years to you. But if you give me permission, I will save Laia.”

I looked at his hand. I did not touch it.

At that moment my phone rang. It was the hospital doctor.

“Your sister is no longer in the protected room,” he said. “Someone brought an order to transfer her in the doctor’s name. The security cameras show that Laia has already been taken out of the building.”

The phone fell from my hand.

Cassius shouted to Dario:

“Lock every exit!”

Dario left the room running. Silvio turned Cassius’s wheelchair around.

I, meanwhile, was looking at the photograph left on the table and understood for the first time: my past had not been only a secret. Someone had planned my sister’s departure long ago…

And we knew that person much better than Cassius than we thought…
