Part 4 — At my bedside, my fiancée quietly wished me dead, but an unknown voice erased her smile as she left the room

The doctor’s last words struck me harder than the pain.

“My son?” I asked.

Alberto Rossi raised his head.

“Luka should have been at home.”

Grace immediately picked up the phone.

“I’ll call my mother. Maybe the child is there.”

“Don’t call,” I stopped her. “If they are listening to their phones, we will reveal the location.”

An investigator from the police was waiting for me on the other line. His voice was calm, but I could hear the sound of sirens in the background.

“Mr. Moretti, according to the last confirmed information, the child went toward the airport with Veronica. We are already checking the exits.”

“He is my son. How could she take him?”

Alberto tightened his jaw.

“She had temporary custody authority. You signed the documents when Luka was ill.”

“I signed nothing.”

Silence descended over the room.

Alberto opened his folder and stopped immediately.

“This signature is not yours.”

“I know.”

“But it has a notary’s seal.”

“Then the notary is involved too.”

For the first time, Alberto looked at me not as a client, but as a person caught in danger.

“I began carrying out tasks for them while telling myself that I was simply managing the family property. This morning Anthony told me I had to transfer money from the trusts.”

“And did you transfer it?”

He could not answer me.

Grace placed the small device on the table.

“Now the recording will hear your answer too.”

Anthony dropped the syringe onto the floor.

“This is all a misunderstanding.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Veronica convinced us that you were going to die anyway. We were simply preparing the family.”

“Was Niko also part of preparing the family?”

Anthony’s lips opened, but no word came out.

I played the recording from the beginning.

His voice sounded in the room: “By Friday he will neither speak nor be alive.”

Anthony slowly turned toward the door.

“Turn it off.”

“That is your voice.”

“I was drunk.”

“But you said the words sober.”

This time he heard himself for the first time through someone else’s ears. On his face he saw the same thing I had been seeing for five days: not power, but fear hidden under the clothing of power.

The door opened and police officers entered.

Anthony raised his hands.

Alberto himself handed the files to the investigator.

“I will sign everything,” he said. “Just find the child.”

Veronica, meanwhile, was already at the airport.

Her flight board was flashing when the police blocked the exit. She was gripping Luka’s hand so tightly that the boy’s fingers had turned red.

“Mom, I want to go home,” Luka said.

“In a little while, darling.”

“Why did you tell me that Dad was no longer waiting for me?”

Veronica’s face changed.

At that moment, the investigator placed a phone in front of her. On the screen was my living face, a live recording filmed directly from the room.

“Dominic is alive,” he told her. “The child will stay with us too.”

Veronica lost her voice for the first time.

Luka returned to me that same night. He entered the hospital room with a small backpack whose zipper was half open. His eyes were tired.

“You really couldn’t hear, Dad?” he asked.

“I heard everything.”

“I thought you did not want to see me anymore.”

I knelt before him, although my ribs still hurt.

“There has never been a day when I did not want to see you.”

He put his arms around my neck.

Grace stood at the door. Luka looked at her too.

“Did you save Dad?”

Grace shook her head.

“Your father endured it himself. I only locked the door.”

Luka took a folded sheet of paper from his backpack. Three people were drawn on it: me, him, and Grace. A yellow sun hung above them, its rays reaching into the corners.

“This is our new family,” he said.

I could not answer anything.

For the first time in a long while, I did not hide my tears.

Three weeks later, I left the hospital.

Anthony was arrested. A case was opened against Veronica for attempted murder, fraud, and illegally taking the child. Alberto testified and gave up his lawyer’s license until the investigation was completed.

I no longer watched them being punished.

Every morning I took Luka to school. On the way, he always asked me the same question.

“Will you come home today too?”

“Today too.”

“Tomorrow too?”

“Tomorrow too.”

I bought a small house a little outside New York. Sea-colored curtains hung at the windows there, the kitchen smelled of cinnamon, and in the living room I had Luka’s drawing attached to the refrigerator door with a magnet.

Grace no longer continued working with me. She opened her own cleaning company, and I hired her first employee, although we argued about the salary for a long time.

“You are offering me charity,” she told me.

“No. I value your work.”

“Then do not write ‘savior’ in the contract.”

“Only your name is there.”

Grace smiled.

We spoke about Niko every week. We made a small memorial for her brother on the outskirts of the city. We attached a metal plaque there, with only his name and one sentence on it: “He tried to warn them to the very end.”

Two months later, Veronica sent me a letter.

The letter was short.

“Dominic, I did not want you to die. I simply lost control of everything. At least talk to Luka for me.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I looked at Luka, who was sitting on the floor and drawing a new sun with colored pencils.

I picked up the phone and sent Veronica only one reply:

“Luka has nothing to discuss with the person who needed to take him away to save herself from her own fear. In the future, you can contact him only through the procedure established by law.”

I did not wait for a reply.

In the evening I opened the kitchen drawer. I still kept there the small brass key that Grace had found in the hospital. Scratches from Niko’s fingers were visible on its surface.

Luka took the drawing down from the refrigerator and brought it to me.

“Dad, I drew a door here. Why doesn’t it have a lock?”

I closed the key in my hand.

“Because now we decide ourselves whom we let in.”

The first snow fell outside.

I locked the door, put the key in my pocket, and took Luka’s hand.

This time, the silence in the house no longer resembled fear.

The door was no longer a trap.

Missed the beginning?
