Part 4 — The Pregnant Wife Left Home Because Her Husband Cheated on Her with Her Sister — But Her Letter Wiped the Smile from Adrian’s Face in One Second

Two minutes after Marcus’s message, Adrian called me again.

This time his voice no longer sounded like that of a man who controlled the situation.

“Nora, do not go to the clinic. My people are already going there.”

“I have to go there.”

“No. It is a trap.”

“My medical records are there. If Marcus destroys them, everything will begin again.”

Elena opened the door. The smell of burned plastic stood in the building, and an alarm sounded from below.

“By the back staircase,” she told me.

Brooke was found on the third floor. Her wrists were tied with a thin plastic fastener. One of the men tried to escape, but Elena’s neighbor, a former firefighter, blocked the iron staircase in front of him.

Brooke rushed to me and hugged me.

“Forgive me.”

“Not now,” I told her. “First we have to stay alive.”

Police cars were already standing in the street. Adrian had called in time. For the first time I felt that his security system was working not against me, but to protect me.

We went to the clinic anyway.

Elena seated me in the back seat of the car, Brooke sat beside me, and Adrian led us ahead. On the way I kept repeating the same thing: I had to hear the baby’s heartbeat.

Security met us in the clinic corridor. Marcus was already there.

He was coming out of the doctor’s office, holding a folder. There was a confident smile on his face.

“Adrian, you have to explain to your wife that all this is a misunderstanding.”

Adrian walked toward him.

“Put the folder down.”

“Do you still think that I am against you?”

“Now I know.”

Marcus chuckled.

“What do you know? That your wife ran away at night? That your sister confirmed everything? Or that your child does not have your blood?”

Brooke stepped forward.

“You lied to me yourself. You told me that Nora was in danger.”

“You were only a tool.”

His words scattered through the corridor.

Adrian took his phone from his pocket and played a recording.

Marcus’s own voice was heard: “The girl must leave. If Nora disappears, Adrian will collapse. Then we will take the company easily.”

Marcus froze.

Then a second recording played.

“The child is his heir. If I cannot take possession of it, I will leave neither of them a future.”

Marcus looked at the phone.

“You recorded this illegally.”

“But you said it yourself,” Adrian replied.

The police officer pulled his hands behind him.

“Marcus Vale, you are under arrest on charges of attempted kidnapping, stalking, financial fraud, and threats.”

For the first time Marcus’s face lost its color.

“Adrian, I built you.”

“No,” Adrian told him. “You simply lived in my trust.”

Marcus was taken away.

And I entered the ultrasound room.

The doctor turned on the screen. A small body was moving, as if it had been waiting for us all night.

“The heartbeat is excellent,” she said.

Adrian tried to stand beside me.

I raised my hand.

“Stay there.”

His face changed.

“Nora, I know that I hurt you.”

“You did not only hurt me. You convinced me that being alone was my fault.”

“I was not with Brooke.”

“I know that now.”

“Then why aren’t you coming home?”

Our child’s heartbeat could be heard on the screen. Even, strong, unstoppable.

“Because the home you are talking about is no longer safe for me.”

That same evening Adrian called the lawyers. The first one said that the case against Marcus had to be hidden to protect the company’s name.

Adrian answered:

“If you hide the truth, you are also taking his side.”

The second one placed my divorce documents on the table.

“You can file a lawsuit against him and demand full custody of the child.”

Adrian looked at the papers for a long time.

“I will not use my money to frighten her.”

“Then what will you do?”

“For the first time, I will listen.”

He asked to speak with me, but I set only one condition: the conversation had to be recorded and calm.

Two days later we met face to face in a small hotel room. A round table stood between us, and my ring lay on it.

Adrian looked at it.

“If you had waited for me that night, everything would have been different.”

“I waited for you for two years.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I wanted to protect both of you.”

“You spent money protecting everyone except the person who stood beside you every day.”

Adrian shed no tears. He simply did not try to justify himself for the first time.

“What do you want from me?”

“Truth. Stability for the child. And distance until I am convinced that being beside you will no longer cost me the loss of myself.”

He nodded.

It was not a happy reconciliation.

But it was the first honest agreement in our marriage.

Three weeks later, the upper floor of Adrian’s house was emptied. Only the cradle remained in the child’s room. One paper moon hung on the wall, with its edge broken and slowly turning in the air coming through the window.

I did not bring my things back there.

Brooke called me every day. In the first weeks we only spoke silently. Then together we searched for a name for the baby.

“Shall we name her Elena?” she asked.

“Why Elena?”

“Because she opened the door for us when every other door was closing.”

When Elena heard this, she cried as if for the first time in her whole life she had been given permission to be important to someone.

Four months later I moved into a small apartment with a view of the river. In the mornings I worked in the doctor’s office, in the afternoons I washed the baby’s clothes, and in the evenings I sat by the window and listened to my girl moving in my stomach.

Adrian came every Tuesday. At first I gave him only ten minutes. Then half an hour.

He did not ask me when I would return.

He was learning how to be a father without returning home.

In the ninth month the first snow came. That morning the doctor called me and told me that labor was beginning.

Adrian stood calmly in the hospital, by the door, as we had agreed.

When our daughter was born, I saw her little fingers and for the first time I was no longer afraid of the future.

!!!  My husband hid his own family from me at the company gala, but when the director held out the phone, the smile disappeared from his face

We named the baby Elena.

Adrian signed all the documents that protected me and the child financially. Not one house, not one account, and not one share of the company was any longer a chain of dependence on me.

Months passed.

One evening Adrian sent me a message: “Could we sit together like a family at least once again?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote: “We will always be the parents of our child. But the marriage is over. Please do not change this decision for me.”

He wrote me only one word: “I understand.”

This time I truly understood that this answer might be enough.

That night I laid Elena in the cradle. I hung paper moons above her. One of them still turned with its broken edge, but now this flaw no longer seemed sad to me.

Sometimes broken things are precisely what remind us that we survived the storm.

I put my wedding ring in a small wooden box, beside the silver elephant that Brooke had held in her hand that night.

The first snow was quietly falling by the window.

My daughter woke and raised her little hand into the air.

I took her hand.

This time I was waiting for no one.

Missed the beginning?
