The Admiral Mocked My Silver Oak Leaf, but Two Words Later Every Officer Stood Up

Admiral Knox Harlan took my badge between two fingers and chuckled as if he were holding something dirty.

“Dear, tell whoever sent you that special forces do not take orders from decorations.”

Several officers in the room smiled awkwardly. No one wanted to laugh along with the admiral, but standing against him looked even more dangerous.

I was standing in the closed conference room of the San Diego naval base. Flags hung on the walls, the air conditioner clicked in its old-fashioned way, and my small silver oak leaf swayed lightly between his fingers.

My badge said: Commander Evelyn Hart, Special Adviser for Naval Readiness.

Harlan brought the badge to his nose.

“Is this a rank or a jewelry exhibition?”

“I have orders, Admiral.”

“Everyone here has orders. The difference is that I decide which ones will be carried out.”

His voice rang through the room like a heavy door locking from the inside. The captains lined up by the wall avoided my eyes. The Marine colonel standing by the coffee machine put his cup on the table. The young lieutenant turned pale at the very moment Harlan touched my badge.

I noticed it.

“I am not asking for anything that is not legally permitted,” I said calmly. “I need the records of the rescue channels and the technical logs from the last six months.”

Harlan tilted his head to the side.

“Six months? Why not the last ten years?”

“Because Captain Jonah Pierce’s helicopter disappeared near Guam six months ago.”

The laughter stopped immediately.

My memory returned again to that morning: the folded flag, the widow’s frozen face, two children who were still waiting for their father to return. Pierce’s last message was only eleven seconds long. Then silence fell over the radio.

A silence that does not occur by accident.

“It was a tragedy,” Harlan said. “Do not turn it into a personal vendetta.”

“I did not come for revenge.”

“Then what for?”

His hand was still gripping my badge. The gold ring gleamed in the light, while old scars were visible on his fingers.

!!!  Part 4 — My pregnant husband gave our honeymoon to another woman, but after my calm response his face turned pale

“For the truth.”

The admiral smiled coldly.

“Little lady, I have buried better officers than you by morning.”

The lieutenant lowered his eyes. I too wanted to take one step back, but I pressed my feet to the floor. Fear gripped my throat, although it must not have appeared on my face.

The night I first read Pierce’s case, I found one name in the damaged file. A name that had been erased from all the reports.

Harlan.

I looked the admiral in the eyes.

“Fleet commander.”

His fingers stopped.

He moved his hand on my badge once, almost imperceptibly.

Everyone in the room saw it.

Then he put the badge on the table and looked toward the rear door. The door opened slowly, and a woman with a black folder stopped on the threshold. Harlan nodded toward her and reached his hand toward the folder…

The folder fell onto the table. The lock clicked sharply.

“This meeting is over,” Harlan said.

“No,” I replied. “It has not even started yet.”

The colonel looked toward me.

“Commander, be careful.”

“I have been careful for six whole months.”

Harlan opened the folder. He turned over the very first page as if he were holding a sentence already prepared against me.

“Your authorization has been revoked. You will be removed from the base.”

“Who revoked it?”

He did not answer.

Just then the young lieutenant quietly said to me:

“Ma’am, Pierce’s records were not stored only here.”

Harlan turned toward him.

“Lieutenant, leave the room.”

“Where were they stored?” I asked.

The lieutenant tightened his jaw and looked at the old clock on the wall.

“In the underground archive. But entering it required two signatures.”

Harlan struck the table with his fist.

“Enough!”

For the first time I heard in his voice not strength, but fear. I took a small recorder from my bag and placed it on the table.

“Your last words have also been recorded, Admiral.”

The air in the room grew heavy.

Harlan looked at the recorder, and then at the colonel.

“You knew about this?”

The colonel shook his head.

Heavy footsteps approached from outside the door. Someone took hold of the handle. The lieutenant said in a whisper:

“They have already come…”

And an unfamiliar voice behind the door pronounced my surname…

The door opened and two armed military police officers entered the room. Behind them stood a woman in a dark blue uniform, holding a white document folder.

“Commander Hart?” she asked.

“I am.”

“I am Inspector General Miranda Cole. This meeting is now being declared an official investigation.”

Harlan chuckled, but no one laughed along anymore.

“Miranda, this is ridiculous.”

“It would be ridiculous if there were not three independent reports in your name.”

She placed the folder on the table. Red seals could be seen on the edges of the papers. My heartbeat sounded in my ears.

“What reports are you talking about?” Harlan asked.

“About concealing the technical damage to Captain Jonah Pierce’s helicopter, deliberately switching off the rescue channel, and falsifying records.”

The colonel looked at me pale-faced.

“That is impossible.”

“That is exactly why we are here,” I said.

Cole took a small memory device from the folder and connected it to the room’s screen. First a darkened sea appeared. Then the helicopter cabin. The image flickered, but the voices could be heard clearly.

“Technical pressure is still falling,” Pierce was saying.

A second voice answered:

“Continue the descent. The order comes from the admiral.”

“The rescue channel must be on.”

“It is already off.”

It seemed as if every breath in the room stopped.

Then Harlan’s voice was heard.

“If the operation fails, the records will be erased. No one will save Pierce until I give permission.”

I gripped the chair because my knees gave way. I had spent six months searching for this voice. Six months hearing that it was an accident, bad weather, human error.

Harlan was looking at the screen. His face was slowly turning gray.

“This recording is falsified,” he said.

“No,” Cole replied. “The device was found in your private basement.”

The young lieutenant lowered his eyes.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Enkelin zeigte auf eine Keksdose, während ihr Vater die Tür verriegelte – und plötzlich verschwand sein spöttisches Lächeln

“I gave them the basement code.”

Harlan turned toward him.

“Traitor!”

“No, Admiral,” the lieutenant said. “For the first time I stood on the right side.”

Cole took out a second document.

“But that is not all. Pierce’s helicopter simply did not crash. Its mission had been changed from the very beginning. You knew that the target was false.”

Harlan looked toward me.

“You knew all this?”

“No,” I answered. “I only knew how to find the truth.”

At that moment my phone rang. The number of attorney Sam Rivers appeared on the screen. He said quietly to me:

“Evelyn, you must get to the harbor immediately. Pierce’s widow found a letter that can change everything for Harlan.”

I looked at Harlan. He heard these words, and for the first time real panic appeared in his eyes.

But he did not yet know that the heaviest blow for him was neither on the screen nor in that folder. It was waiting for us at the harbor…
