The Husband Locked His Pregnant Wife in a Freezer, but a Familiar Voice Sounded Behind the Door and Victor’s Smile Disappeared

The freezer door slammed shut so hard that my two children moved inside my belly at the same time, and then the lock clicked shut.

“Victor!” I shouted and grabbed the handle with both hands. “This isn’t funny anymore! Open the door!”

There was no answer. Only a flickering lamp and a digital display attached to the wall remained for me, showing the temperature: minus forty-five degrees.

White steam came from my mouth when I breathed and froze onto my eyelashes within seconds. I was wearing a thin maternity dress, and over it only a light jacket. In the pocket of the dress lay a small wooden elephant-shaped pendant—I had bought it for the children on the day the doctor told me I was expecting twins. I found its jagged edge with my fingers and clutched it as if this little object could return life to me.

“Victor, please! Think about the children!”

This time his voice came from the speaker. Calm. Too calm.

“That is exactly what I’m thinking about, Lena.”

My heart froze, but not from the cold that had already reached my knees.

“Then open the door.”

“Life insurance will pay triple the amount in the event of an accident. Two million dollars will be enough to raise them.”

For several seconds I could not produce a sound. The ice from my breath was growing on the wall.

“You planned this?”

“The late-night call worked well. You believed that it was necessary to come urgently to the warehouse.”

Five years of marriage collapsed in a few sentences. The man who had slept beside me every night was now telling me the price of my death.

“Victor, I am your wife.”

“You were.”

The connection was cut off.

Darkness descended immediately. The motion sensor lit the lamp only when I stepped. So I began walking—from one wall to the other, with my hands protecting my belly and my teeth chattering.

Three minutes later I felt the first contraction.

“No… not now…”

My belly became like stone. My knees buckled, but I did not dare sit on the floor. I knew that stopping meant death.

The second pain was stronger. The third was followed by such a short interval that I stopped counting the time. My waters broke, and a thin layer of ice formed as soon as they touched the cold floor.

!!!  After I refused to terminate the pregnancy, he abandoned me, but five years later, seeing the twins at the shopping center, his face changed and he turned pale

Then I realized: I would have to give birth to the twins here, in this metal box, alone.

No doctor. No help. Only ice, pain, and my husband’s voice, which was still circling in my head.

In panic I felt along the walls with my hands. In one corner I found an old intercom, but only crackling could be heard in the line. I pressed all the buttons. One red light flashed.

Suddenly the speaker came to life again.

“Lena, if you can hear me, don’t trouble yourself,” Victor said. “In the morning security will find your car. Everything will look natural.”

I leaned against the wall and pressed the wooden elephant to my heart.

“You forgot one thing, Victor.”

“What?”

“I know you better than you know yourself.”

He chuckled.

“You’re frozen and still threatening me?”

“No. I simply know that you always make the same mistake. You think you deceive everyone.”

The fourth contraction broke my word in half. I fell to the ground. The lamp went out. In the darkness I felt the children moving and knocked on the wall with all my strength.

Once.

Twice.

A third time.

Somewhere far away, on the other side of the warehouse, it was as if metal answered me.

Then the sound of footsteps came from the corridor.

Someone was coming quickly. But these were not Victor’s footsteps. A shadow stopped at the lock, the sound of a heavy tool came from outside, and someone shouted:

“Lena, if you’re alive, step back! I’m opening the door…”

The lock broke and the door opened halfway. Cold air rushed in from outside, but to me it was already warm like spring.

Daniel Reeves stood in the doorway—Victor’s former partner and my sleepless enemy. Five years earlier, because of a deal formalized with his signature, Victor had called him a thief in front of the entire city. I believed my husband then.

Now Daniel held an iron bar in his hand, and snow lay on his jacket.

“Don’t move, Lena. The ambulance is on its way.”

“The children… labor has started.”

For the first time I saw fear on his face.

!!!  La aniversarea noastră, sora mea a ridicat paharul și a făcut un anunț care l-a făcut pe soțul meu să înghețe

“How long has it been?”

“I don’t know. It hurts terribly.”

He immediately knelt down and wrapped his scarf around my belly.

“I didn’t come here by accident,” he said. “Victor hid something in this building. I found the camera recording.”

“What recording?”

Daniel took out his phone, but its screen was frozen.

“Not yet. First we have to get you and the children out.”

The ambulance workers rushed in. As I lay down on the stretcher, Daniel whispered in my ear:

“Lena, your husband thought he had erased all the evidence. But one person thought of it before him.”

“Who?”

He took a sealed folder from his pocket.

“You.”

With these words, his phone rang. Victor’s name appeared on the screen. Daniel answered and switched it to speaker.

“Where is my wife?” Victor asked.

Daniel said only one sentence:

“She is alive. And tomorrow you yourself will learn what you left for her…”

Victor’s voice fell silent for several seconds. Then laughter was heard, but this time there was no confidence in it.

“Daniel, no one will believe your word in court.”

“I’m not relying on my word.”

Daniel brought the camera close to my face. Victor’s room appeared on the screen. He was sitting there, holding a glass, with that self-confident smile on his face that had silenced my doubts for years.

“Turn on the recording,” I told Daniel.

He opened the folder and took out a small memory device. The doctors’ noise swirled around us, but I looked only at the screen.

The recording had been made three hours earlier. Victor was standing with the warehouse manager.

“Set the thermostat to minus forty-five,” he was saying. “The door will be locked from outside.”

“But what if someone sees?”

“No one will see. Lena will come late at night, then I will say that she went home. Her car will remain here.”

Then Victor placed a document on the table.

“The insurance money will cover my debts. And the twins are so small that no one will ask why their mother died.”

His own hand appeared on the screen. He was wearing a wooden-beaded bracelet on his wrist, which he had also been wearing that evening.

!!!  Dos días después de casarnos, mi esposo convirtió la luna de miel en una obligación familiar y dejó de sonreír al oír mi respuesta

The recording continued.

“Put the suspicion on Daniel,” Victor said. “Lena hates him, and everyone will believe that he arranged revenge.”

Daniel turned off the screen. Victor’s face became pale.

“It’s fake,” he said.

I was barely breathing, but I still answered:

“No, Victor. The only fake thing was the life you made me believe in.”

The doctor took my hand.

“Lena, we’re taking you to the delivery room. The children may be born soon.”

Daniel stayed beside me. For the first time I was not afraid of him.

Several hours later two small, weak cries were heard. Both children were alive.

And I still could not believe that I had survived.

Just then a police officer called Daniel separately.

“The case is not only attempted murder,” he said. “A second document was also found in the folder. Victor signed something that concerns your life as well.”

Daniel looked at the paper, and the color drained from his face.

“Lena,” he told me, “your husband started everything earlier than when you got married…”
