After Three Sons, I Found an Unknown Baby Girl in the Hospital, but When My Husband Quietly Told Me the Truth, His Face Turned Pale

I was standing in the corridor of the maternity ward when my husband placed a newborn girl in my arms and told me that her past stood before me here. At that moment, the floor disappeared beneath my feet.

James called me that Tuesday at three in the afternoon. I was standing by the kitchen sink, my hands covered in dishwashing foam, while four-year-old Luke hit a wooden spoon against the floor at my feet.

“You have to come to the hospital,” James told me.

“What happened? Did something happen to the boys?”

“No. Just… come here.”

There was such coldness in his voice that I immediately understood that “just” meant nothing of the sort.

“James, who are you with?”

Several seconds of silence followed.

“There is a baby here.”

My heart began racing so strongly that I thought Luke would hear it.

“Whose baby is it?”

James did not answer me.

And at that moment I remembered the oldest, quietest pain of our family.

We had three boys. Nine-year-old Niko, seven-year-old Benny, and little Luke. Their shoes in the corridor were never arranged in pairs, something was always breaking in the rooms, and morning silence existed in our house only when all three of them were asleep.

They were the greatest happiness of my life.

But we had always wanted a girl.

Several months after Luke’s birth, a doctor connected that wish with death. He sat before me in a white coat, his hands placed on his knees, and he could not look me in the eyes.

“Another pregnancy will be very dangerous for you,” he said.

“How dangerous?”

He exhaled.

“You may not survive.”

That evening, after returning home, I took a small pink sock out of the cupboard. It had never been used. I had simply bought it years earlier and had never been able to throw it away.

James took it from my hand and closed it in his fist.

“Our boys need their mother,” he told me. “I cannot risk losing you for the sake of one dream.”

We never spoke about it again.

As if we had locked the dream in a small wooden box and placed it on a garage shelf. Every time I said that we should give the clothes to someone, James answered me:

“Next month.”

The next month never came.

I arrived at the hospital that same evening. The sharp smell of floor disinfectant hung in the corridor. James was standing by the window, holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket. His eyes were red.

James never cried.

“Whose baby is it?” I asked.

He only lowered his head.

“Come inside with me.”

“No. Tell me first.”

At that moment, a passing nurse first looked at the baby, then at me, and then quickly looked away. That brief movement awakened fear in me more strongly than James’s silence.

He led me into a small room. A plastic crib stood against the wall, and a white card hung on it, on which no name had yet been written.

James carefully laid the baby down.

“Before you decide what we should do, you have to know everything,” he said.

“What does ‘do’ mean?”

His fingers were trembling.

“There is something I have never told you.”

“About this baby?”

James nodded.

“How long have you known?”

He looked at me, and I saw such guilt in his eyes, as if he were destroying our eleven-year marriage with one sentence.

“I knew before you, Elena.”

My breath caught.

“What do you mean, ‘before me’?”

He leaned toward me and was about to name the truth because of which he had hidden this child until now, while I touched the edge of the pink blanket, when someone outside the door took hold of the handle and the room door slowly opened…

The door opened, but a doctor stood on the threshold. He held a folder of documents in his hand.

“Mr. Carter, your sister has left,” he said. “She signed the temporary guardianship papers.”

“My sister?” I repeated.

James lowered his eyes.

“Rachel.”

I heard that name for the first time then. James had a sister who, as I thought, had died years ago. In reality, Rachel was alive; she had simply disappeared from the family.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid that you too would lose your peace,” he replied.

“And this child?”

“Rachel gave birth during the night. She left in the morning. She said that the safe place for her was with us.”

The baby stirred again. I picked her up. Her skin was warm, and her fist was pressed to her chin. This little body immediately awakened the dream I had buried years ago.

“Does she have a name?”

“No.”

At that moment, a nurse entered. She held a sealed folder in her hand.

“Mr. Carter, Rachel told me to give this only to your wife.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Volví a casa y encontré a mi padre acorralando a mi hija, pero su reacción cambió cuando vio lo que yo sostenía

My name was written on it in ugly, trembling letters.

There was one photograph in the folder. Pregnant Rachel stood beside a man whom I recognized immediately—Daniel, James’s best friend and my eldest son’s godfather.

On the back of the photograph was written: “Ask James who the child’s father really is.”

I looked at James. This time he was not crying.

He was frightened.

“Daniel?” I said.

He could not answer me.

A telephone rang in the corridor. James looked at the screen and lost color.

Rachel’s name was displayed on the call…

James gripped the phone as if the name appearing on the screen could disappear under his fingers.

“Answer it,” I told him.

“Elena, I have to explain first.”

“Then explain it here.”

It was six o’clock in the morning. Pale light entered the doctor’s room through the windows, while the bitter smell of coffee rose from the paper cup on the table. The nurse stopped at the door, as if she already understood that this was no longer an ordinary family conversation.

James answered the call.

“Rachel?”

He listened for several seconds. Then his face changed.

“Where are you?” he asked. “No, don’t come out… Rachel, can you hear me?”

A hoarse woman’s voice came from the other side of the call, but I could not make out the words. Suddenly the line went dead.

“Tell me,” I said.

James sat down on a chair.

“Rachel was with Daniel. Years ago she went to Daniel. He promised her that he would take her away from the family, but then he controlled her, asked her for money, and threatened her.”

“And this child?”

“She is Daniel’s.”

A silence fell over the room so deep that I heard every tick of the wall clock.

“Are you sure?”

“Rachel told me herself. Daniel knows about the child’s existence, but he told Rachel that he would leave her nothing. He is interested in only one thing—to consider the child his property and silence Rachel forever.”

The baby pressed herself against my chest. Her small breath touched my neck. I looked at James.

“Why did you hide all this from me?”

“Because Rachel asked me to. And because I knew you could not abandon this child.”

Those words hurt because they sounded like the truth.

The nurse took out the second sheet from the folder.

“Rachel left this too,” she said. “It is the preliminary result of the child’s genetic examination.”

Daniel’s name was written on the sheet. The result showed almost a complete match.

James closed his eyes.

“This is only the beginning,” he said.

“What do you mean?”

He looked at the phone. This time a new message had arrived.

“I know where the child is. If you do not return her by six in the evening, I will tell the police that you stole her.”

The sender was Daniel.

I began typing a reply, but James gripped my wrist.

“Don’t write to him. He does not know that Rachel left me one more thing.”

“What thing?”

James took a small memory card from the lower pocket of the folder and placed it on the table.

“A recording that will change everything.”

Before he could put the card into the device, the sound of heavy footsteps came from the corridor. Someone was approaching the door. James stopped the sound and turned toward me.

“If it is Daniel, hold the baby in your arms and do not let go.”

The door handle moved. I pressed the baby to my chest, while James pressed his finger to the button to start the recording…
