Part 4 — My Husband Cheated on Me During My Pregnancy, and When He Returned Home, He Found Only My Ring — His Face Changed Immediately

Mira’s phone stopped ringing, but her voice seemed to still be heard in the room.

Grant went to the window.

“Where is this accountant?” he asked.

“With the police,” Mira answered.

Grant slowly turned around.

“You contacted the police?”

“Before I came here,” I told him.

His face changed in one second. The confident, well-groomed man disappeared. In his place remained only a tired person who, for the first time, had no way out.

“Claire, let’s resolve this within the family.”

“You should have remembered the family when you forged my signature.”

“I was doing everything for you.”

“No. You were protecting yourself.”

Mira put one more sheet of paper on the table.

“Grant, your lawyer is already on the way.”

“Call my lawyer.”

“He refused to represent you.”

“What do you mean, he refused?”

“It means that he learned about the audio recordings and no longer wants to take part in this case.”

Grant took the phone from his pocket and called three numbers one after another. The first did not answer. The second immediately ended the call. The third told him only one sentence:

“Mr. Whitmore, I am no longer offering you my services.”

Grant put the phone on the table.

I still was not celebrating.

My belly felt heavy, my back hurt, and I was thinking that the baby was supposed to be born in a few weeks. Justice was a loud word. And at that moment I wanted only peace.

That same day we went to the bank vault. There we found a small metal box. The accountant, Samuel Reed, was standing there with the police officers. His hands were trembling.

“I was only checking the numbers,” he said.

“Then why did you keep this?” Mira asked.

Samuel took papers out of the box.

“Because one day I knew I would be his victim.”

The folder contained the dates of the transfers, the names of the hidden companies, and short orders written by Grant. On the last page stood his signature.

!!!  On the photo of my lost son, a little girl asked one question and then the powerful mafioso’s face froze

“Tell Claire nothing. If she resists us, she must be declared psychologically unstable.”

I looked at that sentence for a long time.

Then Mira played the audio recording.

Grant’s voice sounded in the room:

“Claire always believes whatever I give her in exchange for peace. Flowers, trips, jewelry — that is enough to silence her.”

In the recording Natalie asked:

“And if she does not stay silent?”

“Then I will tell everyone that she is confused because of the pregnancy. People always believe the husband when a woman cries.”

Those were his words.

Spoken in his voice.

And for the first time I realized how long I had been living in a role written by him.

Three days later the police arrested Grant from the company office. He did not resist. He simply looked toward me and said:

“You will regret this.”

I did not answer.

The trial continued for months. Grant was proven guilty of financial fraud, document forgery, and illegal transfers. Natalie testified and admitted part of the deal. Samuel also told everything.

The main result was not money.

My child and I got our safety back.

The baby was born nine weeks later. It was a girl. I named her Emma, because Grant had never liked that name and therefore I had always kept it only for myself.

On the first night in the hospital, when the nurse placed Emma on my chest, snow began falling by the window. Her tiny fingers clutched my shirt.

I was crying, but it was no longer from fear.

Six months later I rented a small apartment in Boston. In the morning I worked at a law firm as a document examiner. In the evening I fed Emma, put her drawings on the refrigerator, and bought a new book every week.

Our life was no longer luxurious.

But for the first time it was ours.

One evening Emma sat on the floor and was drawing a house with colored pencils. The house had a large door, the sun could be seen in the windows, and two small people stood by the door.

!!!  Entré al campeonato de mis hijos y mi exmarido exigió que me fuera; minutos después, su rostro palideció

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Me and you,” she told me.

“Where is Daddy?”

Emma looked at the pencil.

“Outside.”

I smiled at her answer, although something painfully tightened inside my heart.

Grant was still trying to contact me. First he sent me a lawyer’s letter. Then flowers. Finally I received a short message:

“Give me the chance to be Emma’s father.”

Mira told me that the decision was mine alone.

And I calmly wrote the answer:

“Being Emma’s father is a responsibility and not a word. When you prove this, appeal to the court. Do not try to return to me.”

I did not write to Grant anymore.

One morning, when I took Emma to the garden, I put my hand into my pocket and found the small silver medallion. It had remained with me since that night. The spring still sometimes jammed, but when I turned it, it still played the short melody.

Emma stood beside me and looked at the snow.

“Mommy, why does this song stop?”

I looked at the medallion.

“Because sometimes an old melody has to stop in its own time.”

Then I took her hand and we entered the house.

I placed the medallion by the window, in a ray of sunlight.

This time I was no longer waiting for anyone to return.

Missed the beginning?
