My Husband Cheated on Me During My Pregnancy, and When He Returned Home, He Found Only My Ring — His Face Changed Immediately

That evening, while my husband was buying his mistress a bracelet for thirty-eight thousand six hundred dollars, I was watching the recording from our house cameras and realized for the first time that the danger was not only the betrayal.

Rain struck the streets of Greenwich as if it were trying to enter the house through the windows. The clock hanging on the kitchen wall showed fourteen minutes past seven. I was seven months pregnant, and my right leg was so swollen that I could no longer put on a shoe. In my hand I held a small silver medallion — part of a music box that my mother had given me for the baby’s room. Every time I wound the spring, it played a quiet melody.

That night the melody stopped on a middle note.

A bank notification appeared on my phone. A large amount had been paid from our joint account at a Manhattan jewelry salon. A few seconds later another notification arrived. The same amount was from Grant’s corporate card. The description said: diamond bracelet.

At that moment Grant wrote to me: “Order my mother’s cake, you haven’t forgotten, have you?”

I stared at the phone for a long time. Then I wrote:

“Of course I haven’t forgotten. When will you come?”

The answer came immediately.

“Soon. The meeting ran long.”

But I knew that he was not at a meeting. I had opened the camera application by accident because the motion sensor by the front door had sent me a notification. First Grant’s black car appeared on the screen. Beside it stood Natalie Vale — a tall, blonde woman whom I had seen twice at charity evenings.

Natalie held a silver umbrella in her hand. Grant touched her shoulders the way he had not touched mine for months.

“This gift is far too expensive,” I heard Natalie’s voice when I turned on the camera’s sound.

“Nothing is too much for you,” Grant answered.

My breath caught. The baby moved in my belly, as if it felt my fear.

I had been Grant’s wife for nine years. For nine years I watched him become busier every month, more careful with his phone, and more generous whenever I asked questions. Flowers after six hours of disappearance. Jewelry after a canceled dinner. An expensive trip on the night when I found a restaurant receipt for two people in his jacket.

Every time he told me:

“Claire, you are pregnant and worrying too much.”

And I chose peace instead of suspicion. It was my most expensive mistake.

At three minutes before eight, a call came from the security company. A woman’s voice sounded from the screen.

!!!  Bratr mi dlužil nebezpečnému muži a v noci mě přinutila jedna nabídka podepsat smlouvu, pak jeho tvář ztuhla

“Mrs. Whitmore, administrator access to the camera system in your house has been changed. Would you like confirmation?”

“Who changed it?”

A brief silence fell.

“The request came from your husband’s office.”

The medallion fell from my hand. It hit the floor, and the small spring made a metallic sound.

At that moment I realized that Grant was hiding more than a mistress. He was controlling my house, my accounts, and my future as well.

I asked the security employee to preserve all the recordings and change the password for me. Then I called Mira Hayes, a lawyer whose number I had accidentally found in Grant’s documents three months earlier.

“Mira, if I tell you now that my husband is cheating on me, will you tell me to come tomorrow?”

“No,” she told me. “I will tell you to lock the doors and ask me only one question: what else has he taken from you?”

At eight forty-six Mira was standing at my door. She held a leather folder in her hand, and drops of rain remained in her hair.

“You have to leave the house tonight,” she told me.

“I’m pregnant. Where should I go?”

“Somewhere Grant cannot find you.”

She put several documents on the table. I looked at the first page, but the words blurred into one another. Headlights appeared outside.

“He’s back,” I whispered.

Mira opened the folder and moved her hand to the first page. Just then the door handle slowly went down…

The door opened and Grant entered the house. He took off his wet coat as if it were an ordinary evening.

“Claire? Did you order the cake?”

Mira stood by the window. I put my wedding ring on the table.

“Did you like the bracelet?” I asked.

His face immediately hardened.

“Which bracelet are you talking about?”

“The one you gave Natalie.”

For several seconds, only the ticking of the wall clock could be heard.

“Are you checking my accounts?”

“You left the trail yourself.”

Grant took out his phone and looked at Mira.

“Who is this?”

“The person who protects your wife,” she answered.

Grant came toward me, but Mira stepped in front.

“Do not come closer,” I told him.

“Claire, stay home. You are pregnant and clearly cannot think.”

“That is exactly why I am thinking for the first time in years.”

He saw the ring, the black bank card, and the folded sheet of paper.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m leaving.”

“From this house? From the house bought with my money?”

“No, Grant. From our house.”

Mira called the security company. I went upstairs, put several baby things into a bag, and hid the medallion in my pocket.

When I came back down, Grant was looking at the paper. Only six words were written on it: “You should have checked the cameras before it was too late.”

He raised his head.

“You know nothing, Claire.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

An unknown number lit up on his phone. He answered, listened for several seconds, and lost color in his face.

“Who was it?” I asked.

Instead of answering, Grant looked at Mira.

“Have you already seen the recordings?” he whispered…

“Not all of them,” Mira said. “And now you will tell us yourself what you hid.”

The next morning we were sitting in a small New York law office. It was no longer raining outside, but drops of water still ran down the windows. I sat in an armchair, holding the medallion in my palm, and tried not to let the baby become frightened by my heartbeat.

Grant stood on the opposite side. Natalie sat beside him, wearing enormous dark sunglasses over her eyes, despite the fact that there was no sun in the room at all.

Mira put a memory card on the table.

“This is the complete archive of the house cameras,” she said. “Also the bank transfers and the company’s internal accounts.”

Grant laughed.

“Camera recordings cannot prove infidelity.”

“Infidelity is the smallest problem,” I answered.

Mira turned on the screen. In the recording, Grant and Natalie entered the study of our house. It had been two weeks earlier, on the day Grant told me that he was in Chicago.

Natalie put a folder on the table.

“If Claire does not sign, the deal will collapse,” she said.

“She will sign,” Grant answered. “The doctors will say that because of the pregnancy she is under stress and cannot make decisions.”

On the screen Grant took out a copy of my signature.

I could not utter a sound.

“It is forged,” I said with difficulty.

“Not only forged,” Mira said. “He took out loans in your name and transferred the company’s lands into one of the hidden firms. Natalie owns that firm.”

Natalie took off her glasses.

“He told me that the marriage was over.”

Grant turned toward her.

“Now is not the time for this.”

“You said that Claire had been taken to the hospital,” Natalie’s voice trembled. “You told me that even the baby was not yours.”

!!!  Part 4 — On our wedding day, my husband shoved my face into the cake, but when I put the ring on the table, his smile disappeared

Silence descended in the room.

I put my hand on my belly. My daughter was moving alive. Her small kick sounded like an answer.

“We also did a DNA test,” Mira said and handed me the second sheet. “The baby is Grant’s daughter. He used the pregnancy lie to put your rights into question.”

Grant struck the chair with his hand.

“This is all a conspiracy against me!”

“No,” I said calmly. “These are your words, recorded on your house camera.”

Mira turned off the screen and closed the folder on the table.

“Now the main question is who helped you with all this.”

Grant was frightened for the first time.

His phone rang again. This time he did not answer. Mira picked up the phone, looked at the screen, and her face changed.

“This message is not for you,” she told me. “It came from the company’s chief accountant.”

“What does it say?”

Mira slowly read aloud:

“If Claire has already seen the recordings, tell her that there is a second folder in the bank vault. It says who gave the final order.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

Then I realized that my disappearance was only the beginning. And the person who had been helping Grant for years already knew that I had survived…
