Part 4 — My Neighbor Returned from the Wedding Rehearsal with Bruises, and Her Brother Was Banging on the Door—Then He Suddenly Turned Pale

Lucas immediately reached toward the phone, but Natali pulled her hand back.

“Don’t touch it.”

“It could be a malicious file,” he said.

“Or the truth.”

The police officer took a place beside her. I put my hand on Natali’s shoulder. Her skin was cold.

We opened the file.

An old hospital certificate appeared on the screen. Then a birth certificate. Then a notarized letter.

Caleb was standing by the window. As soon as he saw the first page, the color drained from his face.

“Close it,” he said.

Natali raised her head.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t know what you are doing.”

I looked at the document. In the letter, Richard Bennett wrote that Caleb was not his biological son. Caleb had been adopted as a child, while his real father was the company’s former financial director, who had died in prison fifteen years ago.

Natali could no longer breathe.

“Dad hid this all his life?”

Lucas lowered his eyes.

“This is a private matter.”

“No,” I said. “When you transfer millions in her name, it is no longer private.”

Natali scrolled to the end of the page. There was another document there: a plan drawn up with Richard’s signature, according to which Caleb would become vice president of the company if Natali admitted to “financial violations” after the wedding.

Caleb slammed his fist on the table.

“I knew nothing about this!”

“But you knew that they were tracking my car,” Natali replied.

“I wanted to protect you.”

“With threats?”

“Dad would take everything from you!”

“You were helping him.”

For the first time, Caleb looked at his own hands. The hands that had left purple marks on Natali’s arm.

Lucas took out his phone.

“I am no longer participating in this agreement.”

“What are you saying?” Caleb turned around.

“My client is Richard Bennett. And now I know that he hid material from me as well.”

This was the first crack in the wall of that family.

The police sealed the video, the memory device, and the tracking device as evidence. At dawn, Caleb was taken in for questioning. He had not yet been arrested, but his face said everything: control had slipped from his hands.

Richard called twelve times in an hour.

Natali did not answer even once.

In the morning, her bank informed her that two more loans had been found in her name. Both signatures were forged. That same day, the investigator froze the accounts and requested a protective order from the court.

We were sitting at the kitchen table. The fragments of the broken glass were still lying on the floor.

“I thought that if I stayed silent, I would save the family,” Natali said.

“You were protecting not the family, but the lie they had created.”

She looked at me for a long time.

“Why did you stay?”

I did not have an answer immediately.

“Because when a person is afraid, you should not leave them alone.”

Two days later, Richard’s lawyer requested a mediation meeting. In a room with glass walls in the city center, I saw Richard for the first time. He no longer looked like the philanthropist published in newspapers. His face had sunken, and his fingers were tapping rhythmically on the table.

“Natali, family is still family,” he said.

“Family is the place where I exist under my own name.”

“I did everything for you.”

“No. You did everything for the company.”

The lawyer played the recording. Richard’s own voice sounded in the room: “No one will believe Natali.”

He raised his head.

“This was recorded illegally.”

“Maybe,” Natali said. “But now all the other documents exist too.”

That moment was the hardest. Richard heard his own words from someone else’s side for the first time and realized that this was not a threat, but a confession.

The case reached court. The company conducted an independent audit. It turned out that the fraud exceeded seven million dollars. Grant and Richard were convicted of financial crimes. Caleb reached a plea agreement concerning the tracking and threats and apologized to Natali in writing.

Natali did not send him an answer.

Three weeks later, the apartment was emptied. Natali moved her belongings into a new small home. In the bedroom she left only one thing: an old green ceramic cup with a small crack in the handle. She had held that cup in her hand that night when she first decided not to hide anymore.

I stood in the empty room and looked at that cup.

“Are you sure you want to leave it?” I asked.

“No,” she told me. “But I want, at least once, for an object to be left by my choice.”

Six months later, Natali became an independent financial investigator. In the morning she made her own coffee, and she no longer checked the accounts in fear. She rented a small office in an old brick building and hung on the wall a picture her niece, Maya, had drawn: four people, a sun, and a house whose door had no lock on the outside.

One evening Maya asked her:

“Are you no longer afraid of bad people?”

Natali put tea in her cup and smiled.

“Sometimes I am still afraid.”

“Then why don’t you run away anymore?”

“Because now I know where I am going.”

I continued living beside her, but this time our rules were no longer a defense. We had separate rooms, cooked dinner together, and still put on a film every Friday. The difference was that if one of us was tired, we turned off the film and simply listened to each other.

On the first morning of winter, a letter arrived from Richard. It was short.

“I want to speak to you at least once. I will explain everything.”

Natali read the letter, folded it, and put it in the trash can.

“You won’t answer?” I asked.

“I already answered.”

“How?”

“With silence. This time it is my choice and not his order.”

In the evening, she was using the old green cup in the kitchen. The crack on the handle was still visible, but the cup was not leaking.

!!!  Mein Ex lud mich allein zu Weihnachten ein, doch als vier Kinder neben mir auftauchten, verschwand sein Lächeln

The first snow was falling outside.

Natali closed the window and turned toward me.

“Do you know what I remember most from that night?”

“The banging on the door?”

“No. That for the first time I did not hide my hand.”

I looked at the cup, then at her.

This time, neither the lock nor the people standing behind the door was the important thing in the house.

The important thing was that Natali had returned to her own life.

And for the first time, the green cup did not crack again.

Missed the beginning?
