Part 4 — I Found My Husband Asleep in Another Woman’s Arms at the Airport, but When He Saw Me, His Face Suddenly Went Pale

After the lawyer’s words, Daniel stood completely motionless for several seconds.

Then the phone fell from his hand.

The police officer tied his hands behind his back.

“Daniel Haley, you must come with us for questioning.”

“I will call my lawyer,” he said.

“You already called him,” I answered. “And he also learned that I am alive.”

Daniel looked at me. For the first time he was not trying to be angry, to persuade me, or to play the role of a victim. He was simply frightened.

Rachel stood by the wall, holding her silver clasp with both hands. Now I knew that the clasp was a small recorder. It had quietly preserved Daniel’s voice while I was looking at my own death certificate.

“Claire, please,” Daniel said to me.

“What are you asking me?”

“Don’t do this publicly.”

“You did everything publicly. You announced my death at the airport, told Rachel about my funeral, and closed my accounts at the bank.”

“I did not want it to turn out this way.”

“How did you want it to turn out?”

He opened his mouth, but could not find an answer.

The police took him away.

Rachel stayed with me. Not because we were friends, but because we had both believed the same man and he had taken both our lives away.

That night four cars stood in front of my house. Investigators moved from room to room. My cup stood on the kitchen table, with the morning tea dried inside it. A photograph from our wedding hung on the wall, but Daniel had taken it out of the frame and hidden it in the cupboard.

“Why did he hide it?” I asked the female investigator.

“Probably because he needed to imagine a new life,” she answered.

The next day Daniel’s lawyer, Mark Harper, came to my office. He was holding a leather folder and his face looked tired.

“I no longer represent him,” he told me.

“Why?”

“Because last night I saw all the documents. He told me that you were dead. I prepared the property-transfer statement, but I did not know the signature had been forged.”

“What file was he talking about at the airport?”

Mark closed the door.

“It concerns your father.”

My father had died eight years earlier. I had always thought that his small construction company had been left in debt, and that was why I had received nothing.

!!!  Mi esposo besó a su amante delante de cuatrocientas personas, pero cuando me vio entrar, su sonrisa desapareció por completo

Mark opened the folder.

“Your father left you a controlling share in the company. Daniel knew this. If you were declared dead, he would become the temporary heir, because you had signed a joint-management document.”

My head grew heavy.

“So he needed my death not only for the insurance.”

“He needed to sell the company in your name.”

Mark put a note on the table. It was an addition written in my father’s hand, whose existence I had never known about.

“If my child is ever found to have been deceived by a spouse, they have the right to sell the company in their own name and transfer all the proceeds to a charitable foundation.”

Daniel would not be left with the money.

That was why he had tried to erase my name.

Within several days the court imposed restrictions on the accounts connected to him. The insurance claim was canceled. The banks restored my accounts. The forged documents were sent for examination.

Daniel still tried to regain control.

On the first day he called me twenty-one times.

On the second day he sent me twelve messages.

“Come, let’s explain everything.”

“I did not deceive you the way you think.”

“Rachel confused you.”

I answered none of them.

On the third day he left a voice message.

“Claire, I know you are listening. Do you remember how I promised you in our first apartment that I would never leave you? You promised me too. Don’t destroy me.”

I listened to this recording in the kitchen. Rain was falling by the window, and drops from the faucet fell into the sink in the same rhythm.

For the first time I heard his words as the voice of a stranger.

“Don’t destroy me.”

He had said it himself.

He himself was asking me to bring him out from the ruins of the lie he had built.

I turned off the phone.

I sold our house soon afterward. Not because it hurt me to be there. Because in every room stood a lie chosen by Daniel.

There were almost none of his things left in the bedroom closet. Only one empty shelf remained, and the frame of my photograph lay on the floor. In the photograph we were standing by the sea; I was laughing, while Daniel was looking at the camera.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Schwiegertochter verlangte an Darias Geburtstag eine Entscheidung zwischen ihrer Familie und meiner – dann griff sie nach etwas auf dem Tisch

My smile frightened me.

How could I have been so calm that day?

I did not take the frame with me.

But I put the small wooden airplane that had hung from his travel bag into my pocket. It had been lying on the floor when I returned from the airport. One wing was broken.

It was the only thing I wanted to save.

Three weeks later Daniel’s case was officially opened for forgery, fraud, and illegally claiming the insurance money. Rachel gave testimony. She did not cry. I did not cry either.

Daniel finally admitted that he had made the false death certificate with the help of an intermediary he had found on the internet. He had taken my electronic signature from an old tax file. And he had written my messages on the day when he already knew he was sending the death registration to the bank.

“Your meeting will go well. I love you.”

This sentence was read aloud in court.

Daniel sat with his head lowered.

I was not sitting beside him.

When he first heard his own voice in the recording saying, “Claire is not coming back,” he lowered his eyes. Earlier I had thought that this moment would bring me relief.

It did not.

I simply realized that I no longer needed revenge. The truth was already heavy enough.

Four months later I began working at my father’s company. His old office was on River Street, and a bridge could be seen from the window. In the mornings I made coffee for the employees, checked the accounts, and in the evenings tried not to be afraid of returning home alone.

Rachel came once too.

“How are you?” she asked me.

“For the first time I do not know how I should be, but this is my answer.”

She nodded.

“I received a letter from Daniel.”

“Did you open it?”

“No.”

“I do not open them anymore either.”

We were sitting in a café, and the first February snow clung to the window. Rachel’s silver clasp hung from her bag, but the recorder had already been removed.

“Do you know what the most terrible thing was?” she asked me. “I thought love had been taken away from me for the second time.”

“He did not take love away from us,” I told her. “He only gave its place to a lie.”

!!!  Part 4 — An Unknown Woman Was Holding My Twins to Her Chest in the Kitchen, but When She Mentioned My Mother-in-Law’s Name, My Hands Began to Tremble

Six months later I rented a small apartment on the other side of the river. The walls were white, the kitchen was narrow, and every morning a strip of sunlight fell on the windowsill.

I began painting. On Sundays I painted the bridge, although I had never known how to paint.

One evening Nino, the little daughter of an employee of my father’s company, brought me a drawing. In the middle of a blue sheet stood a house, and two roads led out of the house.

“Is this you?” I asked.

“No,” Nino told me. “This is the house a person leaves when no one waits for them there anymore.”

The child’s words struck me more strongly than any court hearing.

“And where does the person go?”

“Where there is light.”

I attached the drawing to the refrigerator.

That same evening Daniel’s last message arrived.

“Claire, my punishment was enough. The lawyer said that if you change your statement, perhaps everything will be eased for me. I still love you. Let’s start again.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I sent only one sentence.

“Starting again is possible where the truth existed from the very first day.”

And I blocked the number.

The first snow began outside. The small wooden airplane lay on the windowsill. I no longer hid the broken wing. I left it there where the light fell.

That night I slept peacefully for the first time.

Daniel invented my death.

But I reclaimed my life.

Missed the beginning?
